This was a pretty easy trail. Not a ton to look at, but it had a lot of variety as far as hills, rocks, and flat areas. There were places to stop and rest and wasn't too busy. My dog and husband (who doesn't really like hiking) really enjoyed this trail.

Recent rains have small stream and waterfalls flowing. Good way to shake the summer lack of exercise. No scrambling and moderate incline.

A pretty easy hike, not too much elevation gain with some nice running (not always) water at the end. The hieroglyphs are nice, and I’m pretty sure some people have added their own as well.

Kind of dumb to rate a trail 1 star because of forest closures. But whatever. Short hike, on a hot day will still kick your butt a little. Water is really murky this time of year from monsoon runoff

Well maintained trail with lots of great views of Saguaro Lake, as well as Four Peaks and even Flatiron in the distance.
Nice change from the typical Phoenix desert hike, and though the trail is fairly flat, there is just enough elevation change to keep things interesting and to improve the views.
I saw a couple of wild horses at the trailhead. Beside that I barely saw any trash on the trail. Someone must have come through and cleaned up after the party pig summer crew!

In a fee area, restricted access, both time wise and physical areas and trails.

Went hiking with wife, kids, and cousin on the first very beautiful day of the fall hiking season. Waterfalls were still running the day after very heavy rains which made it very refreshing to stop and admire the tranquility of the petroglyph area. One of the best trails for the whole family to be found in Arizona!

Very rocky. Wear proper footwear. Some steep inclines but worth the climb. Easy for the first .8 or so but as you get to the base of the saddleback, lots of boulders to get to water pools and petroglyphs.

It was a good trail to start with. Most of it is in the sun, not a lot of shade until you reach the waterfall area. There isn't much climbing, so very easy on the knees and hips. There was a small flow from the waterfall so that was nice to see.

Beautiful Sunrise Hike this morning with some friends....waterholes were full, no waterfall yet, not enough rain. Good Times!

Disappointed. Nothing that scenic or pretty. I also didn’t think it was easy.

It was a nice trail with great views and a patriotic summit!!!

Nice trail. Easy-Med. The petroglyphs were amazing to see! If you don't like people this is not the trail for you. There were a ton of people, loud with no "trail etiquette". Litter and graffiti on the rocks next to and over the historic drawings.

great for extreme mountain trail riding. The optional wild horses makes it so much better.

Great views. I was hoping there would be more than a small water dribble because of all the rain this week. The ponds were all full but only a slight water flow from pond to pond.

Very easy no great views of the river

This was absolutely breathe taking. Got to hike an see all the wild life up close. The the adventure we were able to make.

I like this trail. Most of the climbing is at the end (or half way through as it’s a there and back trail) but the reward is the shade by the falls and it’s also great when there is water running but that’s not too often.

Excellent beginner trail. My 9 year daughter and I hiked this very easily. Plan to get there early as the parking lot fills up quick.

Visiting from from Northern California. Was a perfect walk.

Turning over a new leaf, really nice experience with this trail. I should have been hiking this trail sooner. The irony is that I was a resident of Gold Canyon and lived not even 2 miles from the Trailhead beginning Point.

Good easy trail

Stunning views, will def do it again. Wanted to see the wild pack of horses, no luck. Since this trail borders the lake, I'm sure it'll be less than serene on weekends, jet-skis, etc. When I went it was quiet, began around 7am on a Weds. Parking is $8, can get at a Circle k or QT on the way.

Interesting quote, from AZ Republic.... "Question: Who was Butcher Jones, and why is a trail named after him near Saguaro Lake?

Answer: The Arizona Republic's Scott Craven did some research, and here's what he found:

"Butcher Jones most likely is Dr. W.W. Jones, according to state historian Marshall Trimble. An online search showed Jones to be more than a medical professional. In the mid-19th century, he also owned mines in Arizona as well as a freighting business. He lived in Yuma, Prescott, Wickenburg, Phoenix and Tempe, and later in life became a rancher. He apparently was fairly influential in his day, and he was friends with Jacob Waltz of Lost Dutchman Mine fame. There also was a mention that Dr. Jones performed surgeries on his dining room table, which may have led to his nickname of Butcher (a Parks Department employee said of Butcher Jones – 'I am pretty sure he was a doctor, but apparently not a very good one.')."

Great views and excellent directions, as provided in previous reviews. Decent flow of water considering the time of year. Water was still plenty cold, but slightly murky. Keep in mind when deciding to swim the rate of flow- just upstream is private property who keep cattle that have direct access to the stream...

I would rate this hike as easy. Went around noon, at that time of day there is almost no shade the entire trail. So I definitely recommend lots of water. The hike up is a very slow incline. You won’t miss the petroglyphs, they definitely are worth the hike. I’d say the hike down is more beautiful, as you can see the valley. Rocky trail.
