Hiked it for sunrise and it was amazing. So beautiful and the perfect moderate hike to train at night.

This is a technically easy but steep trail, with rewarding vistas and forest for the entirety. A little hard to stay on the trail as you reach the summit, because the terrain is strewn with boulders, but well worth the effort one you reach the top.
We hadn't planned on doing this hike, we only had intentions of visiting Mirror Lake, but decided to tack on the second part. We arrived at the summit around 10am completely shrouded in mist, so we decided to hold out to see if the cloud cover would clear so we could see Mt. Hood. Waited nearly two hours (many others came and went in the time), but the wait was SO worth it. Stunning views of Hood and much of the Cascade range both North and South.

This seems like a popular trail, but not overly crowded. There are some camp sites at the lake, and if you keep going to the top there are great views of the entire area.

If we had more time, we would have climbed Tom Dick and Harry, which is on same trail path. The loop trail itself is not quite 4 miles, but it is lovely. If comparing lake to lake, we preferred Veda Lake. However, access to Mirror Lake TH is right on highway. Get there early for parking and expect crowds.

Started the trail at sunrise today and loved every aching minute of the 7 hours it took us to finish the hike!

I'd recommend an early start if you want to avoid the crowds. We met maybe a handful of people on our way up to the Burroughs and didn't have any issues with parking at the trailhead. It's definitely chilly early in the morning though, so bring a jacket and wear layers.

I did the trail counterclockwise and loved watching the sun come up over the mountains, especially as we were heading up to the First Burrough. The climb up to the Second is steady but manageable (on our way down, we saw plenty of families with small children on the trail). And I will say that even though you'll see most people stopping at the Second Burroughs, definitely continue on to the Third! It's about 800 ft of steady climbing, but so worth it.

I would recommend that if you plan on doing the full 9-10 mile hike to bring water, sun protection, and maybe a snack. Although watch out for the ground squirrels! They know no fear when it comes to food.

One of my first few hikes being out in Oregon and this one did not disappoint. The whole hike is spaced out nicely with mirror lake and then spots of views on the trek from the lake to the top. As other people have mentioned, it appears the most popular end point is this false summit. But the top is amazing. On one side you are right in front of Mt Hood (and I believe you can see Mt St Hellen’s and Adams I’m not sure) and on the other you have a fantastic landscape. The hike to this point is pretty moderate with a little bit of rockiness in a few spots.

After this false summit spot the trail becomes more difficult and less travelled. There were a few times we were walking and realized that we had slightly gotten off the path. We only made it about 10 or so minutes past the false summit because we came to an edge with no clear alternative routes ahead. We weren’t sure if we just followed a wrong path or not so we turned back. This was the only bad thing. But going past the false summit has its own benefits, you can see mirror lake from above which is neat and there are cliffs that you can walk up to the edge.

Overall it was an amazing hike that I’d definitely do again in the spring when Hood has more snow. We got there at 11, parking was difficult but we found some. The trail was busy but for the most part it wasn’t bad. It took roughly 2 hours up and 1 hour or so down.

One of the best hikes at this park. A lot of people stop at the second Burrow, but the most dramatic view is at the third. Enter clockwise if you want continuous views that blow your mind. Couldn’t stop to eat without chipmunks trying to nibble at your hands or looking in your backpack. Don’t feed wildlife!

I did this hike September 2016 and did a sunrise hike. I left the trailhead at about 4 am and made it to the top with about 20 minutes to spare. It was a little scary because I hadn't done this hike before and didn't have enough lighting. I used a headlamp but also should have used a flashlight. Watching the sun rise behind Mt. Hood was a bucket list item for me and I'll never forget it. Once the sun was up I could see about five different mountains in the cascade range. Listening to the forest wake up was surreal. This hike will be tough to beat. I did it on a Wednesday morning and didn't see another person.

Beautiful views! Can’t wait to go back

Really nice. Lots of up on the way to the lake.

Was lovely to be greeted and sent off by Mirror Lake. Seemed to be a bit of a false summit at the top in the rocks where 10-20 people were resting. Follow the app and forge on to the actual summit if you’re in it for the challenge and not just the lovely view of Hood. Could also see Jefferson off in the distance.

Get there early to avoid the crowd. A beautiful hike through the forest, around the lake, and up to the top. Hike on a clear day so that you get a good view of Mt Hood, and Mt Adams and Mt Jefferson.

1.5 hrs (1 hr up and 30 mins down) with 11 and 15 yr olds. Great views of the lake. Crowded but 4 stars due to smoke from wild fires. We got the views and we could see all the way across but not the deep blue color! Keep an eye on the crater webcam if you are not staying at the lodge. Dry and steep going up and starts at 7k ft so take water. And have lunch at the lodge after, while you wait for your table have a drink in a rocking chair on the patio overlooking the lake.

Love this hike, gives great views of the basin, crater lake, wizard island & phantom ship. It is short but it is all uphill. I went to watch the sunset on Garfield & I passed only two people who were headed down while I was going up

Amazing trail. This was my first coastal hiking, and as the other reviewers said here, it is important to download a tide chart and understand how to read it as there are two 4-mile stretches of impassible zones.

I found low tide easier to hike because the sand was more packed, and I could avoid more of the cobblestone type rocks. The northern impassible zone would likely be truly impassible in my experience (I travelled at full moon and very light surf and winds) - I hit that part at receding tide and even then some areas were iffy.

The impassible zone south of Miller flat may be doable in high tide with calm conditions, but I wouldn’t risk it.

The views, solitude and wildlife make this trail one of my all time favorites. I bought a map, rented a bear canister and got a free tide chart from the lost coast adventures shuttle.

Please note that there is no cell service in Settlers Cove and anywhere along the coast - so plan in advance.

Couldn’t get any camping spots. Thought they were supposed to leave 50% of the sites for first come first serve but I guess they actually don’t do that??? Decided I wanted to photograph Heart lake and that I wasn’t to be stopped. So I turned this into a day hike. Definitely wouldn’t recommend. I did the hike counter-clockwise and it turned into a 23 mile, 3,500 ft elevation change, 13 hour beast. Heart lake and surrounding mountaintops made it worth I though. Being on the ridge line most of the time is a real treat!!!

Great hike and beautiful view but I wouldn’t have gone if I knew I had to pay $30 for a one day pass to go up there. Also way over crowded and a lot of tourist who don’t move out of the way for experienced hikers.

Amazing hike! Best done on a clear day. I think it was closer to 6 miles and on the easy side of moderate. Happy National Summit Day!

Hiked the loop clockwise today in 7.5 hours. The middle was scenic and crowded. The first and final thirds were unremarkable. Maybe it’s better as an overnight?

Great views

Spent three days backpacking the loop and for the most part, loved it. Most people do this loop counter-clockwise but we decided to do it clockwise to spread out the elevation gain. For the most part, it was great... but I think next time, I'd rather just get the elevation over and done with in the first 8 miles. Doing the loop clockwise spread it out over about 13 miles.

The first day was an easy 3ish miles to the Sol Duc River campsite #2. Didn't have any issues finding the site (all campsites are clearly labelled), we were right next to the river, and we didn't have any issues with mosquitoes or anything.

Day two was about 11 miles, from our campsite to Lunch Lake. There were A LOT of flies and mosquitoes once we were above 3,500 ft. We applied a generous amount of Deet to our skin and clothes and noticed that we weren't actually getting bitten, but the bugs were relentless. The lakes were especially bad, even with ThermaCell mosquito repellent.

On a side note, saw two bears at Heart Lake and another one at Lunch Lake. Plenty of people in the area though, so we didn't have any issues. The one upside to such a well-trafficked trail, you shouldn't have any issues with the wildlife! And when I say well-trafficked, I mean you'll meet ultra runners doing the entire loop in a day, day hikers doing parts of the loop, and plenty of other backpackers (especially if you stop at Heart Lake for lunch).

Another side note, there's pretty much no water on the High Divide between Lunch Lake and Heart Lake, so fill up before then!

Day three clocked in around 9.5 miles from where we were camping at Lunch Lake back to the trailhead. Most of the elevation gain was climbing back out of the Seven Lakes Basin and then it was pretty much all downhill from there! The trail is really rocky though, so watch your footing.

All in all, this was a great backpacking experience. Just wish there hadn't been so many flies and mosquitoes! If I'd known what we were in for, I'd probably have opted to camp somewhere on the Divide instead of next to one of the lakes.

Did this trail early this morning (8/3) with spectacular weather and minimal crowds until the descent. I had the peak to myself for upwards of 45 minutes. I must stress the extreme crowds toward early afternoon-mid day. The hike is entirely uphill until you reach the peak, but nothing a moderately in shape person couldn’t do. Go early and enjoy!

Cons:
- 5+ hour drive to Bay Area
- $80 shuttle ride not including tip
- Walking long stretches on wet, unstable rocks
- Lots of poison ivy
- Had to climb portions of rock that are very dangerous where tide came in too high
- Walking at an angle in sand that is not packed down at all, caused foot injury for me
- Lot of people backpacking the trail
- Tides coming in and out very stressful, reaching and finishing impassable zones challenging
- Zero marking on trail
- Bear footprints on beach
- Very difficult to be rescued in this area and is dangerous enough to be a concern
- no cell service
Pros:
- Beautiful scenery
- Some private campsites

My boyfriend and I are avid backpackers and completed this trail in 2 nights/3 days in mid July.
I did not enjoy it and found myself looking down for a lot of the trail trying to stay balanced on the rocks. I personally do not find walking on rocks to be enjoyable when backpacking. My boyfriend liked the trail because of the challenge. For me, it was too difficult to enjoy. I thought this trail would be mostly walking on sand and did not factor in the rock aspect or stress with the impassable tide zones. There were a lot of people hiking the trail and I was hoping to be a little more isolated than that. There was one very sketchy portion of the trail we encountered on the first day where the water on the beach was too high so we had to climb up and over a portion of rocks that was very dangerous with some other people who took the same shuttle as us. (note: this was not at high tide) The one upside was that the scenery was beautiful. However, I advise really knowing what you are getting into, this is not an easy or moderate trail by any means.

Great hike. Made it to 2nd Burroughs but did not continue since I didn’t have water or sun protection. Weather was amazing. Trail was easy to follow and connected with several other trails.

Pleasant, well-shaded trail through forest that culminates with a lovely lake & great view of Mt. Hood.

Steady elevation gain to the top, but nothing dramatic. Many exposed roots & one short section across large, loose rock that could prove difficult for those with disabilities or nervous dogs. There are also two quite narrow wooden bridges. Mosquitoes noticeable around the lake area in July.

Get there early. Arrived at 9am on a summer Saturday & all trailhead parking was full. Had to park in the Skibowl parking lot down the road, which adds a very unpleasant extra mile (there & back) along the highway shoulder.

This trail forms the lower half of the Tom, Dick & Harry Mountain Trail (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/tom-dick-and-harry-mountain-trail).

Hiked TDH trail with my wife. It’s a steady up hill gradually getting steeper as you go. Bring plenty of water and some snacks to keep up energy. Once at the summit the view was priceless. To the north you see Mt Hood, Mt Adams & Mt Saint Helens. To the south Mt Jefferson. Get there early so you can get trailhead parking, otherwise tack on another mile walk along the highway 26.

Nice short hike with great views of the Lake as well as Wizard Island. Some snow left but the top of the hike is accessible. High traffic.
