there is a small cemetery at the start of a trail head just behind the welcome center . very well maintained and very clean hiking trail. just beautiful.

Good moderate trail .. well marked .
At the beginning of the trail go to the left for a more up hill hike . Stay right it’s more down hill walking !

I enjoyed this trail a lot. Very diverse terrain and pretty throughout. My dog loves creeks so the spring was a plus for us.

Trail was ok, but nothing too interesting. that being said, it was a lot better than just staying home and watching TV.

Going in as one of my favorites! The cliff rocks. The foliage. The lizards. The cave! The lake! It is definitely a moderate hike. Steep in places. Close to the edge in others. Loose rock, so good shoes needed. It is very worth the time tho.

Had a great ride with wife and teenage boys on Slaughter Pen 1, riding Medusa and Tatamaguchee. Great trails, lots of fun for all skill levels

Lots of stairs up front, but a great view of some rock formations and bluffs!

This was a beautiful trail, easy to find off the Buffalo River parking lot. The whole trail is in the woods and shady and it circles and goes though beautiful rock formations you can climb on or between. There is some incline to give it some difficulty, but overall I’d love to return with my kids! Beware poison ivy and ticks.

7/28/18 trail still closed for maintenance to reroute 1 mile of the trail.

Pretty easy hike. Unfortunately all of the streams and river were dried up so it made for dull sights. Trail was easy to follow and well marked. We were covered in a bunch of tiny ticks by the end of the trail even though we wore tick repellent. Probably a better hike to do in the spring when water is flowing and there aren’t as many ticks.

This is a great hike to take with kids! Lots to see and scramble on. This route has a connection that leads to the hatchery, deer leap trail, fire tower trail or river trail, so using the connections helps in finding the distance you want.

Nice easy hike. Make sure to bring tick repellent as we were covered when we left. Also keep an eye out for snakes. We ran into a large rattler on the trail near the river.

Wife and I just walked this on vacation. I wouldn’t call it a hike as much as a walk. Big hilly sections though. My suggestion when you get to the loop... go right. The pools in the picture were more the creek outside the trail though not in the trail.

Took my husband and two boys ages 13 and 11. Mid July around 10:30am. Shaded entire way so no need for a hat and sunglasses. Loved the rock formations. We haven't had rain in a couple of weeks so Creek bed was dry until we got to the end. Well marked. Took us 78 minutes with a good pace. Heart rate was consistently between 115-130.

Nice hike through the woods. (I actually did the longer Little Clifty Creek trail.) Downgraded because the noise from the nearby shooting ranges was markedly audible for half the hike, as was traffic for about 3 miles of the hike; and there wasn't a nearby body of water at the end of the hike Note: There is a multi-trailhead parking about 2 miles down Townsend Ridge Rd, where one can access the Little Clifty or War Eagle trail; Townsend Ridge Rd is west on Rte 12 from the AllTrails designated trailhead.

Great hike for the kids and I

Great trail!! A bit interesting for a 4,5,7 yr olds, but they still had a good time.

Had my first ride at Slaughter Pen yesterday. Amazing trails, well manicured, and very challenging. Worth all the pain.

clean and well marked. Could use some places to sit on the trail.

Arkansas is so lovely! We enjoyed beautiful scenery in this historical area.

There is a lot to like about this trail...elevation, distance, scenery...But I was a little disappointed in the fire tower providing zero view and having to cross the highway twice. Enjoyed the finish along the river.

just a walk upstairs to other trails not a true hike. But a great outlook to see the hatchery from above if that is what you are interested in.

It was a fun trail but more of just a walk with stairs. I wouldn't classify it as a true trail to hike. Close to the hwy so I could hear traffic. Took away from my purpose for being out in nature.

Was awesome!

It took us over an hour to find the trail head. It’s off the side of the highway basically in the middle of nowhere. To get there you have to walk along the highway which is incredibly hilly/curvy and cars, trucks and trailers are flying by going 40+. We didn’t even walk much of the trail because it was too hot and we didn’t have enough water for 2 people and 4 dogs. As usual in MO, the water is a crystal teal and beautiful but this park was SWAMPED. The wading area was full of screaming kids throwing rocks at one another and the fishing areas were packed. I had no idea this was a giant trout hatchery and so that was a little disappointing. I’m more of a let the dogs off leash and see 0 people on the trails kind of person. The drive for me was 3.5 hours and I would never come back. It was a beautiful park but not for activities I enjoy.

Nice hike, only took a little over two hours at a mild pace taking pictures along the way.

It was a great trail with minimal traffic! Plenty of wildlife, saw multiple squirrels, a turtle and a snake. Was a little bummed there wasn’t water access (you could only see the water from one spot).

We had a great time hiking this trail. The picnic area was shaded and by a creek. The trail was moderate hiking. Had beautiful rock formations. The path is not clearly marked. We had to follow the creek sounds to find our way out. Would hike this trail again.

Don't access at Hatchery, steep climb, use another.
