Great trail that leads to a beautiful lake. As of November 2018, the road leading to the trailhead was open and the well marked trail was easy to follow, even in the snow. Enjoy the views of the lake!

Loved it!!

Gorgeous views, lakes, waterfalls, everything a great backpacking trip consists of! Wow!!! Breathtaking!

Great adventure. Be prepared. The weather can change quickly. Best in late July - early September. Plan on 7-10 hours round trip.

Not my favorite hike but it was definitely well worth it. Don’t be discouraged by the lack of trees from a wildfire in August. To access the hike you must drive 10 miles on a dirt road, and then you’ll hit the trailhead (this is a nicely maintained dirt road). The trailhead was beautifully maintained. It was about 50° with some patches of snow and a tiny bit of ice on Oct 26, 2018. We were the only hikers their, so it was nice to see a trail without a lot of people. 4th Of July Lake is beautiful. We did the aprox 3.6 mile round trip hike in about 90 mins.

We did it Friday, 9/21 after winning the lottery permit drawing. It was bit cold and challenging but rewarding. Beautiful landscapes inside the canyons.

Did this in one day and was amazing. However I recommend taking your time and doing it in two days.

Definitely my favorite trail in the McCall area. The hike was tough but the views were totally worth it. Mid October was the perfect time to go as we got to experience all of the fall colors and got to see snow at the lake.

Kids loved it.

Brought my father-in-law here and loved this trail. He is agrees it’s one of the best hikes he’s done in his life! I’m looking forward to doing this again and backpacking further!

Great trail with a beautiful destination! Highly recommend!

The road to the trailhead is not well marked, so watch closely for FS 316.

I didn’t get to go all the way to the top because of how late I got to the trail. It was very challenging but very pretty! Would recommend to hike this in cooler months.

Very easy hike. Nice view in the lake.

Uphill the entire time. The view is worth it though. We went pretty slow and it took us 1.5 hours to get up and 1 hour to get down.

The views of the lake are beautiful and the trail was well marked, pretty inclined but worth it. Definitely a quick and short hike well worth the views. I would highly recommend continuing on and doing the Boulder Lake loop to really make the hike worth while if you have time.

So beautiful!!! End of September the leaves are all changing color and it was breath taking. Definitely a steep trek and there is loose dirt and gravel so be careful going down. We had the whole trail and lake all to ourselves. There’s a beach area at the lake to relax. The drive up to the trail head is a dirt road but not difficult to drive at all. Enough parking for about 6 cars. Would definitely recommend!

I am 73. I staged this hike. Camped at the 1st saddle. Left the next morning at 7:30 : was on top at 2:30, left at 3:00. Was back at the TH by 8:40 with a little help from my head lamp. No wind except enough to keep one cool. I believe this hike, though not as long and high as Longs Peak in Colorado, is tougher than Longs Peak. The hidden danger on this trail is not the bouldering but hypoxia - altitude sickness. Climb slow enough and take frequent rests to allow your body to adjust to the altitude gain. I’m a photographer so I always wait for the light - no early morning hiking until I can take photos. Don’t just “bag a Peak,” enjoy the climb and the views.

had a great day with my family not to hard of a trial.. just the climbing up the mountain sucks but the view makes it all worth it

We stayed in camp site 12 and took the last shuttle in. We started around 11am and made it to the campsite at dusk. Long day. To many people the second day. We used 2mm neoperene socks in Sept and it was perfect. Make sure you have your pass we got it checked by the rangers. The hike is amzing. A 40 liter bag is big enough for this over nighter. Have fun.

Nice trail to a large dramatic falls! Fast downhill hike to the creek and a fun scramble down the rocks to the base of the falls. We met some people who hiked up to the falls from the other direction, a campground off of 55 I believe. I have not tried the hike in that direction.

If you camp, it’s $5 and the fee station is right next to the outhouses (insanely clean in there). Personally I’m not the most fit person as I spent the past month and a half in California (~500 ft in elevation) but it took me about 10 hours to do it. The ascent starts out moderate then gets steeper till the tree line. From there it’s pretty easy going even through Chicken Out Ridge. The last bit is a bit intense but no one was on their hands and feet so it’s not that steep. The trail can be a little hard to find sometimes so I’d just look up once in a while and make sure you’re actually on a trail and not just rock hopping.

Chicken out ridge is not that scary. Just be careful and take your time. It can get a bit intense when the wind is blowing really hard but again just take it slow.

Nice hike in the fall, with colors. Fairly steady uphill, with a good portion on dirt road shared by road vehicles. Trailhead was a little difficult to find, but it is marked by a sign about 40 yards to the right of a concrete bathroom being installed. Google maps got me to the right place, and All Trails was useful in locating the actual trailhead. My only regret was finding no mention in online descriptions of the road condition to reach the trailhead - fine for Jeeps, trucks, and sport utilities, but not so good for a low clearance road vehicle.

this was a great hike! not too difficult or too far.

Epic run with amazing views on a well maintained trail!
As good as it gets!

Hiked this trail on 9/20/2018. Relatively easy to moderate hike with a little bit of switch-backing during the last mile. Lots of bear scat on the trail so be safe. Bring a good bear spray and a firearm. Hike with a few people if possible.

We saw no bears, but plenty of small wildlife and beautiful scenery. The lake at the top is magnificent. No snow or ice as of today. Took us a total of 3 hours in and out, including the 30 minutes we spent hanging out by the beautiful lake. I would highly recommend it as the trail has very light traffic (literally only 3 other people showed up for the hike on a beautiful Thursday). It is also very well marked throughout. Great experience!
