Very nice scenic area. Destination hike, Do Indian Point trail which is just down the road.

A good incline to get your heart pumping. Not many people on a weekday. Well maintained and lets you forget you're in the city!

Short and easy trail if you want it to be. Breathtaking views. People do die here every year from falls, but as long as you aren't leaping like a wild man from rock to rock over obviously deep chasms (you'll see people doing it), you'll be fine.

awesome trails !

Completed this Trail PLUS French Canyon! Amazing trails, breathtaking views! Great Date with the Wife! Totally recommend! Wear comfortable hiking boots.

Great hike, great nature center. Very well maintained trails that are just challenging enough

The waterfall here was beautiful and it was neat watching a yoga class finish a little Sunday morning meditation

The waterfall here was amazing and it was neat seeing a yoga class wrapping up a little Sunday morning meditation

A good one in Shawnee, great rock formation!

A very short easy stroll, a must for the view. Go at sunset. Bring camera:)

Awesome sunset spot! Don't miss this if you're in the area. One of the shortest and most rewarding walks you can go on.

So much fun to explore and climb. Beautiful views, especially at sunset. Made for some really beautiful pictures. Nice easy trail.

I had a wonderful time.

Defintely do this one, you can also hike over to Pounds Hollow from this trail.

We walk this at least once a year, you forget you're in Illinois.

Great trail. I suggest going down into the canyon while looping. Adds stairs but you can see some great cliffs and waterfalls!

another stunning park!. Shawnee national forest ceases to amaze me.

Definitely making another trip back!!! We could spend all day here and still not see everything!! We loved it! Nice trails and beautiful rock formations! We will definitely go back soon!

Nice short trail with a lot to see!! Absolutely beautiful!! Can't wait to go back!

Well marked and groomed, plenty of up and down throughout balanced by some nice flat areas as well as benches to sit and rest occasionally. We went on a Sunday afternoon after church and the parking lot was full. Gift shop is open near trailhead and they have a few animals you can take your kids in there to see.

The perfect escape from the city! It was 90° today but we could take refuge in the abundant shade and water so it worked well! I recommend coming out on a weekday to avoid the traffic. We will be back for sure!

one of my favorite trails. so much climbing and exploring to be done on this trail. sites to see the whole way. you are basically climbing up the creek bed and its awesome. be careful some slippery areas. water fall was beautiful I could hang out there all day.

Path is well maintained around top loop, and is what you would expect from an easy walk in the woods. When you reach the staircase that takes you down to the ox-lot cave the landscape drastically changes. There are extraordinary rock formations, sheer cliffs, and exciting small caves. You could spend an hour in this area alone exploring all the rock formations. Overall the loop took us 1.5 hours with lots of exploring.

Nice easy trail with great views and rock formations. Worth a look if in the area.

Mattheisen State Park is less well-known than it’s nearby counterpart, Starved Rock, so there is usually less of a crowd. While the trails are not as well marked, the Lake Falls Dam Waterfall is breathtaking and can be seen from the bridge at the top and down below at the base. This is one of my favorite areas to hike. Definitely a must see if you are in the area.

Wide dirt road trail on private land. The owners allow access on the first weekend of June to Sept. Easy trail with gradual elevation plus beautiful views of rolling hills and farmland. There’s a geological marker at the top as well as a sign for the highest point put up by the owners. There’s also a register so you can sign their log book. Great for families and high pointers. The day we went, there was a Boy Scout troop.

I loved this trail and will be back. I went counterclockwise because I didn't read the reviews before our trip. However, I took a long rest by the water before going up all the stairs and it was lovely.
