Great hike in the morning. Lots of Spring birds including Bluebirds and Woodpeckers. Crowded after 10, like a bus dropped off 100 people! Parking up and down the road got full!

Not a tough hike, but it's different than most hikes in MD that I've done. The terrain changes at several different parts of the trail, which is a nice change of scenery on a decently long hike! Really beautiful and bonus - there's a little history here, so if you have time it's worth stopping to read the signs and check out the sights for a little MD history!

Hiked to Black Rock last weekend. Trail was clearly marked, no issues navigating. The first mile is a bear, but after that it's smooth sailing. A lot of foot traffic. Saw maybe 40-50 people between the parking lot and Annapolis Rock and only saw maybe 5-6 people between Annapolis Rock and Black Rock. Worth it to go to Black Rock. Equal views to Annapolis Rock even if the rock itself isn't as picturesque and as a bonus I had the whole place to myself.

Will definitely go again, just need to go on off peak hours.

Note: Annapolis Rock has a privy if ya need to go.

The change in terrain and scenery was fun and challenging. The view was beautiful. The trail is definitely not marked as well as what I’m used to and we got a little turned around and confused, accidentally branching off onto a different trail at one point. It could have just been the day we went, but we did not encounter a ton of people on this trail, just occasionally. That made the hike more enjoyable.

Got the the trailhead in the early afternoon on a Monday to find I was the only one in the parking lot. Didn't meet another hiker going out or back. First mile or so is pretty tame going through open forest. After that it begins to get a bit steeper. Once you reach the ridge the views are amazing the rest of the way. Particularly the views at Buzzard Rock. Truly spectacular for this area. At this point you can turn around if you'd like. You will find views of the surrounding mountains but none better than you've already seen, only ups, downs, and about 4 more miles round trip. I pushed on just to get the distance in. All in all it's a great hike with some solid views. Trail is a bit rocky so I couldn't push the pace as much as I liked. Took about two and a half hours total. I'd recommend shoes with ankle support. I recorded the hike and it was a cool way to keep track of your time, pace, and elevation but it drained my battery terribly so I doubt I'll use the feature again.

Great hike. Started off on the purple trial and then completed the white trail. Broke my ankle at the end but would definitely hike it again.

Nice easy walk, great views at White Rocks. The scenery around the trail is really nice. There's a lot of parking available too.

I was a bit thrown off by the first leg of this trail as it runs parallel to I-70, though the rumble of traffic subsided after the first mile. Overall, this was a nice walk through the woods. I would probably rate is as “easy” as the hike was mostly flat with minimal inclines - which makes it suitable for families! The view was great.

Probably more moderate, in reality, but there are some pretty draw-out climbs that can be tough on the quads. North Ridge links with a few other sections (including the AT) in Sky Meadow State Park, and has some really great views of the surrounding area. Trail is pretty well maintained and wasn't all too busy (even in the middle of the day), though there are some sections covered in fallen trees/branches from recent windstorms in the area. Overall a fun day hike!

First time hiking this trail... My son took me & we had a blast! Rain, a little snow at the top, & still a beautiful breathtaking view! I’ll definitely hike this again!

Easy/moderate trail. Great view!

Great views on the initial ascent up the mountain. It’s was pretty muddy considering all the recent rain but the higher I got, the dryer the trail. After a stream crossing, and another long climb, the North Ridge meets up with the AT. Here the trail turns into open pastures and more great views.

Drove over 2 hrs for this hike and it was well worth the distance! Easy to find, well marked and maintained trails with exceptional views up top. 10/10.

This trail takes you around the old mill and by the Susquehanna River. It also takes you to a small man made waterfall that is truly beautiful.

When it comes to Hiking or Backpacking the Patapsco Valley State Park, the Avalon, Orange Grove, Hilton, Hilltop and Glen Artney areas are by far the best trail system in the whole Valley area. You can CAMP in the Hilton area at 1101 Hilton Ave. in Catonsville, Md. There are plenty of pavilions, restrooms and drink fountains in many of the sections. There are so many loops you can hike so the miles and terrain will indeed vary pending your planned trip. You can even take the kids hiking or just go to one of the two playgrounds. I have been backpacking this area since the late 60’s and have seen many changes. The biggest was in 1972, The Storm of Agnes. Can you picture the water as high as the railroad tracks? Many of the trails you see on All/Trails was created and recorded by me. I am still out here weekly. Simply view my recording for the many options to hiking this area. This was a fun hike with some good scenery. I kinda did it in two loops by accident. After coming back to my truck I figured out the part I missed and hiked that too. My recommendation is to start hike to left of mansion. Just go under pipe crossing up stairs and bear left. Historic walk to white land of promise. I'm pretty sure you'll walk by big tree other people have mentioned. It's big! From there follow rock run yellow and you get to walk along nice creek for a little. When you come to man made dam cross road to Wilkinson and grab the orange blaze ( left) from there. After that your on the trail according to app. This way you'll come down ( later) ridge trail red and that's a pretty good ascent.

One of my favorite trails in the area!

Good scenery down by the water with a view of Mount Vernon. Blackberry Trail is uninspired and scenery falls off on most of the back end. I would return in the fall or summer to do again.

Nice hike in steep terrain. Start at the parking lot by the rapids, then straight-up to the King and Queen Seat rock formation. Great views! Then off on a loop hike on the white and red trails. Great Fall hike.

This is a trail I grew up hiking. Its an easy trail if you park at the top, and moderate if you start from the bottom. It's quite a steep hike from the bottom but isn't very long. The view is very worth it, especially in fall. There are some side trails that are worth exploring as well, and a few play grounds for children.

Great hike. Did it in the rain and the foggy view was still gorgeous. Worth the work

Great hike

Enjoyed the peacefulness of the trail. Beautiful views and not hard to hike in the snow/ice.

Due to bad road conditions on the mountain I had to park on a field off of Comus Rd. This allowed me to incorporate more of the Mountain Loop Trail to the summit adding a little over 3 miles to the loop. Thankfully, it was just snow, so the trails weren't too treacherous. The markers at the summit can get confusing. Some trails leading off the summit are way easier to walk down than others. I can't wait to retry this extended loop when it gets a bit warmer.

One of my absolute favorite hikes!

The tough-but-not-backbreaking difficulty here was the best part. Views are indeed great, but I did think they were a hair overblown; the hype had me expecting something on par with Harper's Ferry.

Easy to get confused - markings are just ok, and with multiple places to park, you might get turned around without a plan. However, driving the loop and stopping several times could very well get you nearly a whole day well-spent here. You're not supposed to gawk at the mansions on the way down, but I did, and I have no regrets.

Nice hike to a gorgeous view.

2/3 pavement ... some hills ... great company!
