the hike was moderate but with boulder climbing on the last part. Plenty of cairns on the way up to follow. The drive to the trailhead was more stressful than the actual hike. Highly recommend an suv... Also do not go through the cattle fence on the way out unless you want to get stuck out there!

Just hiked this trail on 01/19/19. The trail is snow packed and icy for the first 1.5mi and then it ends. The trail has absolutely beautiful sights & was truly worth the effort!

Great hike. I prefer to do the loop. If you take the wash to the river it’s not super difficult to locate the hot springs. Buts not clearly marked either. You’ll need to go up and over going “downriver”. You can not follow the bank. Bring lots of water and a snack. Takes me about 4 hours. I always try and pick up at least one piece trash that’s sure to be laying around.

Very pretty hike near the perimeter of Saguaro Lake. It’s rated as “moderate” but I would definitely consider this an “easy” hike. I went on a Sunday so it was a little on the busy side, but not overly crowded.

"Lightly travelled"?? Really? Maybe because it was MLK Day, but this trail was packed with people and pets, including a class outing. Constantly having to step aside the narrow trail to let opposing hikers by and vice versa. Would have been some decent scenery if I had time to look at it. When one of the hikers was playing rap music on his phone so everyone could hear, that was it for me, turned around and went home. I would also rate it as easy, not moderate.

Beautiful trail!! Loved it! Took about 2.5 hours

dirt road follows dry river bed, VERY SANDY. Use 4 wheel low and be patient. first half of hiking trail is easy-moderate. half-way to two-thirds is moderate and begins rock. last third is very rocky and climbing. SPECTACULAR valley view. FRESH AIR!! windy day, partially cloudy and natural air conditioning LOL
Stay hydrated, used 2 liters on way up. one and a half liters on way back. quite a challenge and well worth the hardwork :D

Proud to say at age 72 I made it to the top today my second time after 7 1/2 years when I climbed before. Seems like it was much more difficult this time but then again I am much older. It was a perfect day for hiking, the weather was about 62° and sunny skies. The views from the top are spectacular, take plenty of water and a snack. trekking poles are great in certain areas but most the time you won’t need them, definitely you’ll need gloves for the cables.

This trail was a serious challenge, bring snacks, gloves and some tunes (air pods).

I hiked this trail in July and was disappointed because I couldn’t do the whole thing. It’s beautiful and the descent is not too difficult, but the trip back up will take about twice as long. I want to come back and complete the trail because of its amazing scenic route through the Grand Canyon.

Beautiful views, trail is easy to follow.

What a great trail! Tough but absolutely worth it! Gloves are a necessity for the cable portions - and a little upper body strength helps too. But what a fun way to climb! All the way up is beautiful scenery to birds-eye level and a 360 degree view at the top. Amazing!

the hike was beautiful and the swimming hole at the end looked like it would be amazing in summer. totally worth it for the scenery itself though. there were quite a few small non biting bugs by the swimming hole though.

Beautiful trail! We moved at a decent pace and it took about 2 hours (in and out).

hard trail down. beautiful views
.
Amazing

My little beagle loved it and crushed the uphill portions. Carried her downhill because she didn’t want to leave plus the critters during dusk were all out driving her nuts. Went only up to the cable sections about 1.2 miles up. Too difficult with a dog on leash and dogs are not allowed past the saddle.

Gloves with grip and hiking boots/shoes.

Great hike. There are a few spots that definitely require a little patience and safety; otherwise you will be calling an airlift out.
Go on a weekday if possible. Less traffic. There are a lot of spots that only one person can pass at a time.
No dogs past the first guide cables. Don’t be that idiot.

Trail offers great views and an amazing scenery. My girlfriend and I were able to do this hike quite easily and we are not regular hikers. Going to see and experience the inside of the Soldiers arch is well worth the entire hike. The 7 sacred pools are pretty cool too. Good hiking boots/shoes are recommended since there are a lot of rocks and mud that you can step on/in. Great hike and will definitely make this a yearly trip!!

moderate for sure.

on Quartz Peak Trail

I love this hike! I enjoy the drive to it. Steep incline is a definite workout. Go early because one the sun is above the mountain range very limited shade. I didn’t make it to the peak, but if you do wear reliable shoes and a walking stick or trekking poles recommended for balance.

Beautiful lake views with moderate elevation gain. Can’t wait to try this one in the spring when the flowers bloom.

I just hiked this trail in mid-January. It started out kind of flat with not much to look at. Then, the trail began to gain a little elevation, slowly by slowly. As the elevation gained, the scenery just kept getting better and better. After about the first mile or so, the red rocks rose right in front of me as the sound of the water was heard below. There was not another soul in sight as this became one of the most magical hikes I have done in a while. After about 3 1/2 miles I reached the pools that this hike is known for. I did not expect such a stunning sight. I strongly recommend this hike.

I love this hike. I've done it twice and it never gets old. Very scenic, very quiet, with a decent amount of shade. Bring lots of water and stay prepared for unforseen weather patterns.

Butcher Jones trail hugs the perimeter of lovely Saguaro Lake. Steep, rugged slopes and colorful peaks are a gorgeous backdrop to the glistening water. Along with fabulous views we saw a variety of water fowl - loons, buffleheads, ring necks, ruddy ducks, and of course, ridiculous coots. The last mile—a cut across between two arms of the river-lake —we happened on an opening with many active gnatcatchers, bushtit, cactus wrens and black phoebes.

This was a pretty complete hike. Steep going up and down, some scrambling, 3 point touch at times, and of course use of upper body strength with cables assistance....lots of areas with cables. Yes gloves are essential here! nice views for sunrise. Was very fun and challenging. Would say a little more difficult than Camelback echo canyon.
