this was a fun and challenging hike for a flat lander. the snow added an extrsma challenge. I took off at about 10 AM so it was still cold. I didnt have much of a problem with footing. I only had hiking boots on, no spikes. it was ok going up, but on the way down, about 1 PM it there were some slick spots which just meant I had to slow down. the views at the summit were worth the hike. there is a great view of longs peak, the only 14er in RMNP.

Hiked 12/5. Zero issues getting to the trailhead via Jeep. Light snow is left on the mountain. Easily hiked with spikes. Very cold and windy once at the top section of the trail. First half of the trail was easily marked. I had to verify with my downloaded map during the last half of the trek to the summit as the trail wasn’t as easily distinguished. Beautiful view. Fine in cold weather with a face mask and gloves.

Hiked on 11/2/18
I usually love this trail, but after the turn off for Lost Lake, you’re SOL if you don’t have snowshoes or cross country skis. Seriously, don’t continue to Skyscraper without proper gear. I ended up post-holing to my thighs for an extra mile before deciding I should turn around. Would have been perfect with snowshoes!

Particularly good on a post snow winters day. The view is worth it

Great day hike, well traveled to gem lake. Ice on some of the switchbacks. Less traveled but still easy to navigate the trail to balanced rock. Yaktrax were beneficial in ice and snow covered areas. 11/19/18

better go before more snow comes, only me and 2 other hikers were on the trail, and they luckily marked the way with their feet. Awesome views all around. Bring snow chains if in a small vehicle, I passed a sedan that slid into a ditch in my Nissan Sentra, i had no issue with chains on my tires. snow is about 6 inches at TH, more at the top, very quiet and a nice getaway

View at the top is flamesssss. Traversed up here because I heard there is a dope view of the continental divide as well as the YMCA. Smoked a fat bowl at the top and chilled with some Blue Jays, amazing time. Wore some spikes for this run but could have done without; they did help getting back down the mountain rapidly in the snow as dusk approached.

Well marked and great views at the top!

Beautiful hike on 11/04/18. I was actually the first on the trail in the morning as it was snowing and got to make the first tracks which was great. It was the perfect distance for me and the summit was gorgeous and so fun to see over Estes and RoMo. Would do this hike again!

Very challenging hike, especially with 6+ inches of snow on the ground. With all the snow, trails aren’t marked that well, just follow everyone else’s footprints and hope they go in the right direction. Great views on top of Horsethief and Pancake. Overall for me was 8 mile round trip.

This trail was definitely hard! It is uphill the whole way up and continues to get steeper as you reach the top. The views are absolutely amazing. It got extremely cold and windy towards the last stretch of the trail so wear warm clothes! I would also recommend hiking boots and poles. There are some parts with gravel that were slippery. There was some snow up there but not a lot. Would definitely do it again!

In my opinion, this trail is a lot harder than moderate for a relatively “in shape” adult. It is a steady incline the entire way to D.P. with some very steep portions that are rock/gravel. Trail is relatively easy to follow.

Of course, the views along the way are priceless and 100% worth the journey. Approximately 8-9 miles round trip, depending how much wandering you do once at the top. We averaged around 1 hour per mile. We are from Illinois and the altitude had our lungs working pretty hard!

Overall 4/5. Would try again with better preparation.

Amazing hike! Very up hill, lots of stoping points.

Other reviews mention the trail isn’t well-marked, but it’s not terrible. I got a little lost, but I didn’t go far before realizing I needed to retrace my steps. Trail is fairly well-trodden.
Views at the top are absolutely amazing.
From car to car took me four hours, but I am still acclimating and it definitely slowed my pace. Will definitely be doing this one again!

This was a terrific hike on a gorgeous day. Took 4 hours with an additional 30 minutes on top to soak in the view. There were no steep drop offs despite the ambitious ascent up, so those with a fear of heights need have no concern. It was slightly treacherous higher up as a result of snow and ice, but good hiking shoes and poles were sufficient to make it passable and enjoyable.

Good description of trail and views. Mid October was very nice. Not too warm. Trail could’ve been marked better.

Really enjoyed this hike. Great blend of flat terrain at the beginning, lots of woods in the middle, and a great view at the top. Well worth it.

Great hike! Loved everything about this one- smaller distance but you still get a nice workout in. As others have stated, the view at the end is amazing. I enjoyed the trail as well- lots of trees and openness. Only saw one other person on the trail today- little bit of snow off to the side.

Another one of my favorite hikes. Used to hike it regularly when living in Colorado Springs.

Easy to find, good parking and the views driving to this hike were stunning at this time of year. Only wish there was a trail marker closer to the top. The end view is beautiful and yesterday the fog was still on some of the mountains, so we had aspens, pancake rocks, fog, sunshine and beautiful blue skies. I really enjoyed this hike.

Very nice hike.

A challenging and enjoyable hike! I took a previous hiker's advice and took the Pancake Rocks trail first before the Falls and that would be my recommendation as well. This trail is an incline for the majority of it and I didn't meet a single person on the trail that wasn't huffing, so if you want a physical challenge this is the perfect hike for you. The leaves are a gorgeous fall color on 10/2, but I suspect they won't be that way for long. Lots of pine coverage along the trail so would be a great hike year round. Parking at the trail head is limited and this is a popular trail so plan ahead and happy hiking!

Great hike!

I had a lot written in this review but for some reason my Google Android decide will delete it it was great

Beautiful! It’s definitely not an easy hike but so worth it.

Awesome view of the aspens

Beautiful trail! Lots of great pathways, with good elevation and views!

Steep. I’m out of shape. Nice view at the top!

Did this trail with the family while carrying the young ones in packs. Wife had a difficult go up the first 1/4-1/2 mile but once it leveled out it was very pretty and would love to finish the pancake rocks portion sometime! Trail was clean, well marked and in good shape. I think moderate is a good classification
