It’s really steep, which makes the return trip (descent) a bit difficult. The majority of it is in the sun, with limited tree coverage, so be sure to wear sunscreen! I prefer some of the other fire trail hikes that are more wooded.

Fairly easy and nice long walk

Lots of incline but beautiful hike, the signs are confusing so I’d recommend using all trails map to make it through.

Here's another vote for going clockwise and knocking the hardest hill out early in the hike. You need a permit which you can purchase online from EBMUD for $3. Beautiful views of the hills with lots of birds and lizards. I didn't see anyone else on the trail, although I did go mid-day on a hot Thursday. Big chunks of the trail don't have much shade so bring sunscreen, and plenty of water, especially if you go in the summer.

This hike is a nice representation of California. Know that this trail is legit hard. The uphills are steep and seemingly never ending. The views will provide just the right amount of distraction and reason to stop and rest. There’s also plenty of shady parts. It’s a bit tricky to follow the trail on the rebound. We got off trail, but plenty of cut overs were available. The trail also had quite a few benches, so take a lunch/snacks and enjoy the view! There’s a reason this is called a panoramic hike. You’ll have multiple views of Mt Tam, SF, Oakland and beyond.

Take plenty of water!

Really good moderate level hike.. as recommended start ur hike from the left side and then hike towards the lake so that u get the steep part early in the hike.nice views on f the reservoir.. Part shade.. Start early so that it is not very hot. Nice clean wide trail. Use Alltrails to map urself on trail. Not many people on this trail.. It says u need EBMUD permit to hike here.

I walked the West Ridge trail yesterday. It gets so much traffic from hikers and bicyclers that the plants on either side are covered with a fine, brown dust. Kinda depressing. There are many better trails in the area.

I love this hike and have been back 4 times in the past 2 months. It’s about a 6.5 mile loop and the first half is all incline but you get some breaks in between each hill which helps. Be prepared for some rocky/gravel areas which can get slippery so wear good hiking shoes.

The second half of the hike is easy and you get even better views from the other side of the hill. Beautiful views throughout the trail. About half is covered. It can get pretty hot depending on the weather and the annoying flies come out.

Awesome trail!

How did we never know about this hidden gem before? Nicely marked trails which were shady and pleasant. It was beginning to get cool as we left. Not crowded at all and we found plenty of parking later in the day. Really enjoyed all the variations in terrain. Not much of a view but a peaceful and quiet spot to be out in nature.

Good hike - views were nice. Parking lot is really small but since we went on a weekday we got a spot. Very steep near the start but otherwise a pleasant hike. Saw lots of lizards and a baby king snake. Got engulfed in a ladybug swarm which was a little strange! Can get a little warm in spots but not bad even in summer.

Very nice elevation loop. Tiring on a hot summer day. Start as early as possible.

bring your hiking shoes! very steep uphill/downhill. overall great trail, and beautiful views

Urban “hike,” really more of a city walk. Lots of green, lots of dog walkers.

Tough steep hills but overall great workout. Enjoyed the views but it was overcast so the clouds and fog covered the view of the city. Cool to be above the fog, though.

Relaxing trail with a little bit incline to keep it interesting. Good views but mostly covered by the foliage.

Amazing views. Yes the uphill is very steep and a bit of a challenge but so so worth it!! Definitely will be back

The views were nice and nice spots to stop for a snack.

Great hike. Pretty steep in stretches, but the views are worth it! We went counter clockwise which seemed to be less intense.

One of my top favorite Bay Area hikes!

Lots of cow paddies but now cows. Definitely go clockwise. Some bugs due to proximity to the water.

Great views and steep but there is no signage along the trails. Near Grizzly Peak the trail was covered with poison oak and overgrown so we turned around instead.

It is a great hike but the description is inaccurate and which is why I am giving it 4 Stars. I am an experienced hiker and this was definitely a hard one, one of the harder ones I’ve done. The hike up on West ridge trail was a killer. The description says it’s a cool climate in hot weather however it was actually extremely hot. Today was 70° and it felt scorching because more than half offered little to no shade. Brought my dog and it was very tough on him. If you know what to expect it was great: beautiful views and a great workout but just be adequately prepared as we were not :)

Overall nice trail for the good view and convenient/easy access. Definitely very good workout on the incline. Certain parts of the trail are too steep and slippery with loose dirt and rocks, so it may get unsafe if not wearing the right shoes. There were no signage along the trails and many many splits, making it a bit difficult to navigate without frequently checking the GPS on my phone.

mountain biking

i think its B.S. how mountain bikers get limited to fire roads. riding a fire road is like riding on the street. every trial that looks like it would be fun we cant be on. out of all the trails in most of the parks in the area there,s maybe 4 to 5 bike trails.how ever if you a hiker you can be on any trail you want{ now thats fair } NOT. WHERE ARE THE BIKE ONLY SINGLE TRACK TRAILS for those of use who arent afraid of a little danger like flower sniffin bird watching wimpy ass hikers. MOUNTAIN BIKER 4 LIFE

Awesome hike, great workout with beautiful views! Round trip 3h!

Great, convenient hike! You get a solid workout from the steep climb, and the views are pretty nice.

Spring hiking

Awesome hike, started counter clockwise, straight up first 1.3 Miles, then continued climb up to 2.7 Miles. It’s hard as described, if one starts clockwise then it’s less intense. Spectacular view of Oakland, San Francisco, Emeryville, Berkley, Richmond, Lafayette, and Moraga. Lot of wildflowers. 6.7 miles with elevation gain 1,667 feet.
