Awesome place to explore! While there is not much hiking, there is a lot of natural beauty, and cool tidbits of info along the paths. There is something for everyone there :)

Great run! I would recommend starting counterclockwise.

Love this trail!! I did about 4 or 5 sunrise hikes here in July and I have nothing but good things to say about the trail and the view at the top!
There is a couple very very rocky sections but the majority is a nice dirt trail

This was marked by someone who has never hiked. I don’t have any other explanation. The first time I went around I got off trail about 4 times I had to backtrack and by the end lost the trail completely, ended up on someone’s driveway and took that out. I thought I could go the opposite way to see where I went wrong and instead ended up taking a big circle back to the parking lot.
I have been hiking for over 30 years and never had a more frustrating experience than this loop. The blue seems what you follow when you start and then the yellow comes out of nowhere. There are probably 50-100 trails that branch off for access from peoples homes.
I wanted to love this because it’s so close to home but it’s awful and I’ll only ever go back for kayaking.

Please read Lauren’s review-spot on. My parents live in EG, when I’m home, I work out here a lot. Ideal for dogs, children, picnics (grills provided, and parking), beaching, running on cement, trail running, walking, horse back riding, mountain biking (not terribly extreme), reading a book under a shady tree, kayak launching....bathrooms located around park. Safe for solo people, lots of shade to walk and run, mainly bug free (mornings rough in woods on trails in July, stick to cement...very few cars). The loop I normally do from equine center along water and down to carousel and loop back around is probably 4....
Farmers mkt Friday’s from 9-12.
I swim in July here laps as beach as a guard, and is buoyed off. Easy and shallow to lap swim. Check for closings. Rare but happens with torrential rain.

Love the woman who bequeathed this park. There are so many happy people here daily!!!

beautiful trail, I wish it was slightly better marked but fantastically kept. bugs are out and it was swampy but fun

A nice trail to walk and to take a swim. It is quite scenic but it is hard to find much wildlife due to the crowd. The visitor center is really nice and don't miss Henry David Thoreau's hut.

Bring bird seed to feed the birds. we saw many people hand feeding the birds. Great place for families. All kids should check out the Rockery Loop. Picnic tables for lunch.

This is one of those spots I would gladly head to over and over again with kids of any age! Equally great for adults who love hiking with plenty of loop options and interesting waypoints (my favorite were the pond loop and observation tower).

I would agree with other reviews that while you need have a little bit of patience, if you have sunflower seeds the chickadees will be eating right out of your hand… we also spotted loads of turtles, and a faun as well as other local wildlife! I was hiking with kids aged 6, 8, and 14. We got about 2.2 miles in and spent about an hour and a half hiking. Bring bug spray and be tick-savvy.... we had to pull a couple despite being careful.

Everybody loved this hike! We’ll be back for sure!

Great trail. Nice ocean views. Completed a 4 mile route.

You can call this trail moderate but after you do it you won’t feel that way, lots of short bursting ups and downs that over time will take their toll. Secluded except for the occasional motorbike / ATV that roars through illegally. This happens because of the primitive nature of the area, and the fact that over 20 years ago it was a known destination for 4 wheeling clubs.. so ignorant fathers who once rode there legally as a kid bring their kids out there thinking it is still ok. It’s not FYI the state of CT out it’s foot down on this. If you come across these 4 wheelers make you let them know this is no longer a permitted activity.

I guess after all is said and done this is the risk you take when you attempt to hike this loop.. might be better off heading south into the Yale forest and get on the Nipmuc trail there, that forest is beautiful and the ridge at Boston Hollow is killer. Not as strenuous as breakneck pond. Google it.

Finally - bigelow hollow is a mob scene on the weekends in the summer - ethnic groups have been gathering in hoards that leave a lot of trash around and make it difficult to enjoy the solitude of nature with their loud music and sheer #s of gatherers. I respect all people, but many aren’t aware of today’s norms for respecting these parks and the wilderness. They come to the wilderness equipped as if their were having a barbecue party on the beach..

I've spent close to a decade hiking Dogtown and it's a beautiful area. It can be quite easy to get lost out there though, even with all the time I've been out there I still get lost. A few times I made it out thanks to my dogs. I've always hiked it with dogs though, abs haven't hiked it since the dogs passed away.

Don't be scared away by the lore, they are a really magical woods. There was a tragic murder back in the 80's but it gets sensationalized too often, it was a tragedy but an isolated one, and the killer was caught.

It's also very easy to end up in people's back yards in Dogtown. People are generally very nice if you're respectful.

Nice and wet but the rain held off today. This is a great place to hike/run even in the rain. Did both summits and saw a beautiful doe/deer deep in. She caught my eye...then she was gone!

Fun hike around Breakneck pond.

The trailhead from Cedar Hill Street is not easy to find. I went via the office building parking lot just across the street from Forest Street. If you drive around the parking lot behind Piedmont Plastics it's in a corner of the lot and you can just see the little trail head sign. The trail is lovely, but there is construction on one side of the loop, which is closed so you can only go out and back (take the trail to the right, the left hand trail is closed)- There's currently no loop. It winds through pretty meadows and there are nice views from the top of the hill. It is very quiet - I saw only one other dog-walker in my hour there on a Sunday morning. Trail is pretty easy, slow rises, but there are some rocky spots. Dogs love it; check for ticks after!

The trail is scenic and its around 8 miles. Follow the yellow markings on trees as the trails are not marked well. Shoutout to the app the map and gps tracking helped us. There are too many mosquitoes, carry insect repellant and hiking gear.

Hikers, be aware: there was a murder on this trail in the 1980s.
Spooky, historical hike. Dogtown was settled in the 1600s by 80 families fleeing pirates, natives, and other coastal bombardments. After the revolutionary war and the war of 1812, dogtown was abandoned, and became a ghost town that housed squatters in the abandoned buildings. Lots of rumors about witches and other such things, too. The numbered boulders signify where a house once stood.
Easy to get lost - multiple maps are needed.

Loved this park. Awesome park ranger to five a tour for free with some history included. Worth the time to take the tour. Amazing view lf the old quarry, it's truly unbelievable!

Lovely property. Great mix of landscapes and wildlife. The ferns smelled amazing. One of my favorite places I've visited. Loved all the kiosks that provided information on the areas.

Did this trail 7/8/18. It is well marked and really nice. thd bluff overlook is awesome. be sure to stop in the building for a map. The woman at the desk was very helpful. I will be back.

Love this place. Nice place to get out in the woods on a regular basis.

Won’t be back unless the trail is maintained. 10 mins in we turned around because it was completely overgrown.

A bit longer by my GPS. Nice trail overall, great for h King and okay for trail running. The moraine section was difficult, and the trail is poorly marked. Needed the map consistently and still made a couple incorrect turns. Great trail for his area

Very nice hike and a good cardio workout. The view on the top was breathtaking!

This place is beautiful and peaceful. Lots of bugs! Bring bug spray.

HI’m th

Loved this trail! Beautiful 360 view on a treeless summit upon Mt Watatic. The hike up was steep to the mountain with roots, rocks, and pine straw. The second summit down was the best view. You could see everything, even Boston!

This is a great trail for running, hiking, and provides the chance to see some wildlife. Some of the trails which branch off of the north side of the indicated loop are pretty unkempt, and often dead-end after becoming pretty rocky/less ideal for hiking and running.

Simply beautiful and so peaceful.
