To Hike (M) Map

Did this hike today. A lot of packed snow made it a little more strenuous but not icy. View from top is amazing & the hike itself is enjoyable and peaceful. Ran into 2 other people.

Snowshoes were needed for this hike. Some spots had avalanche risk. It was a beautiful hike. Also a great place for backcountry skiing.

Dirt road to trailhead, went in a compact sedan and made it — slowly. There is a huge trail system here and this particular route was just okay. Yesterday there was a bit of snow on the trail but no extra traction devices were needed. Where the trail ends on the all trails map above is in the middle of a trail with no view or lookout to speak of. Luckily we met a nice gentleman who told us to continue straight take a right on the dirt road, then take the first trail off to the left and explore around the boulders on Chautauqua peak. The views were alright nothing out-of-this-world.

The trail cuts through a meadow/Gulch which I’m sure would be amazing in the summer with all the wildflowers. That is when I would recommend completing this trail. I likely would not return in the winter.

beautiful views! for my first hike it was well worth it!

Of course I’m from the flatlands of Michigan – so this trail seems great to me.

This was a beautiful hike! I went on 3/2 and it was completely dry, with not a lot of hikers at all. It was a steady climb up, with some down hill parts as well. There are gorgeous views of the lake the entire hike, and the top offers beautiful views of the lake/dam. I highly recommend!

Pretty easy, but great view!

Was fun , great for a quick weekend hike ! Was pretty active a lot of bike riders but they were courteous and path was shared .
Great views found a little hidden water fall that was frozen ! Kids loved it would go back again .

Pretty boring at this time of year.

Dynamic. Some icy spots that can be walked around/avoided. Great views!

Nice easy hike

Pretty decent. Get there early for parking

Very moderate incline and declines over the long trail. Quite populated but not overbearing. Beautiful scenery and overall great weekend hike!

We really enjoyed this trail. Also glad we brought the 4 wheel drive vehicle for the road to the trail head. It’s a steady up or down trail, not much flat. Today there was still some ice and snow on the trail. We met only one other person on the trail.

My husband and I took 3 babies and our 5 year old today. It was beautiful but much harder of a climb than we expected carrying one baby in a pack and pushing the other 2 babies in a double bob stroller while the 5yo walked. Water still 99% frozen but beautiful still!

Used snowshoes on a well-packed trail to Naylor Lake. The trail to Silver Dollar is rocky and right near avalanche possibilities (that was our opinion, however, the amount of snow up on the mountains is not significant due to high winds.) It's a short hike up but with the help of alltrails.com, we were able to trek in the deep stuff off trail on the way down. We just had fun and meandered in the 3 ft. of snow off-trail. Thanks AllTrails! We didn't stray too far from the trail either but you don't want to get lost out there!

Road leading up to the trailhead is not very well maintained but any car should be able to make it no problem. The trail is pretty short so you can get to the falls in less than 10-15 minutes. When I was there the falls were basically all frozen. You could see a little water running behind the ice. Microspikes helped a lot, especially if you want to actually get up close to the frozen falls. I definitely plan to come back in Summer when the falls aren't frozen.

I went to the dunes during the day for a few hours and then hit Zapata Falls a little before sunset. Zapata Falls campground is awesome and suggest staying there if you want to camp. Thats where we camped and other than the wind was perfect.

some icy spots

It takes longer to drive up to the trailhead than it does to hike to the falls. The falls are pretty, but the trail leading up to them is uninteresting and ill-maintained. The road to/from the trailhead from the highway is BRUTAL on your vehicle with potholes and bad grating. Absolutely a no-go if your car has low clearance. Awesome view of the Dunes from the parking lot, though.

Nice hike close to home. There are foxes/ coyote in the area so please, please keep your dogs on leash. Saw poor Suzie getting cornered by a pack of 4, i was too far to see what exactly they were. Thankfully the owner retrieved the dog with no major issue but it could very well have gone another way.
I spoke with a jeffco ranger who said a female mountain has been known to frequent the area so please keep your furry friends close and also, pack out their poo.

This trail was a lot of fun to run. The only suggestion I have is to be familiar with the trails before you head up the mountain. The kiosk at the trailhead has a trail map, but it isn't very specific and doesn't show distances per trail. Being a first-time on the mountain, I ended up talking to several friendly trail runners who gladly helped me out. Super nice weather!

beautiful hike on 2.26.18. it was very dry despite snow in other places. no spikes or yaktracs were needed. this is a really great trail

The views were great and there weren’t too many ppl since I went on a Wednesday but the storms last week made parts of the trail incredibly muddy/slippery... would definitely go again though when the trail is in better shape! Bring sunscreen though since the trail is rarely shaded and know that the Rim Trail portion is closed beginning of February through July (pretty sure those were the dates).

We completed a 3.8 mile loop from North Table Loop to Mesa Top Trail to Cottonwood Canyon Trail. There was a lot of snow on the top of the mesa, but it was a fantastic hike, with some neat views. The mesa's totally exposed (no shade), so it actually makes for a really good winter hike-- I'm sure the sun beating down could be brutal in the middle of the summer.

Beautiful not too hard, great views and easy to find. Parking lot at the bottom is paved. Yak tracks this time of year bc there are some shady spots

Beautiful area especially seeing it right after the recent snow fall Wednesday 02-21-18.. Little easy for my taste as it left me wanting more but still loved its beauty. Snow packed did not feel the need to put microspikes on but slippery in places.

2.22.18 - snowy, beautiful trail with several icy areas, one in particular that was quite perilous! spikes worked well on the way up but on the way down I slipped and landed hard (you'll probably be able to see my wipe out for a day or two - it's in the pictures section too to help identify that section). no regrets, crazy gorgeous overlook that made it all worth it!!

Hiked in snowshoes. Not heavily traveled today. Nice out and back to view the frozen lake. Highly recommend the trail.

some slick ice areas but overall a good hike, amazing view
