10/15- Beautiful hike! Definitely some elevation gain, but the views are worth it. :) We did not encounter bugs, and the trail was not crowded. Autumn seems like the perfect time to hike the trail! The drive to the trailhead was a little rough; it adds a good amount of time to the commute.

My husband, dog and I hiked this yesterday (10/14). The weather conditions were perfect at a cool 45°, not a cloud in the sky, and no wind; all of which I find pretty amazing for the middle of October in the Cascades.

We started at 12:05, reached the lookout at 3:00, started descending at 3:30, and reached the vehicle by 6:10.

I loved the different layers of this hike; dense forest, uncovered meadows blanketing the slopes, boulder fields dotting the top, and a challenging scramble to reach your destination.

There were a few pockets of snow and on our descent, the top half of the trail was a muddy mess, otherwise it was very manageable. The few morning hikers we met mentioned seeing a mama bear and her cub in the meadow above the trail but we didn't see them. Also for any fur parents, my 40 lbs. lab mix did not fair well with rock scrambling to the lookout and down.

All in all, I really enjoyed it. The worst part was the brutal 4 mile road to the trail head.

Awesome fall hike with incredible rainier views at the top. Went on a Monday, but only ran into about 5 other folks total. The hike is an easier start, but gets steep about 2 miles in. My pup and I had too much fun! Highly recommend!

We started at 9am Saturday morning and reached the top at 11am. We recorded 6.4 totals (definitely not 4.8) but well worth it. Some of the rocks after halfway up were iced over, so just take your time! The view was amazing, but next time we will go for sunrise!

Very beautiful, with at least three great overlooks to accommodate different difficulty levels. I would call this overall Moderate, not Easy, but our group (and dog) had no problems getting to the Middle Falls. The final 1km Upper Falls stretch is marked Hard.

Pretty good hike. Got more tired towards the upper falls. Wasn’t expecting it to be as steep. But overall a great hike. Went in the morning to avoid crowds and was pleasant. Though noticed a few people with dogs off leash which was not awesome. For that reason I wouldn’t be able to bring my dog next time I hike this trail.

What an amazing hike, one of my favorite’s so far in Washington! It’s a calf/quad/booty burner and there’s a considerable scramble to the lookout, but it’s so worth it. The views from the lookout are breathtaking! The only thing I’d say is that the road to the trailhead is rough, covered in potholes. Get there early as the parking lot is small and the road to the trailhead isn’t wide, so it’s tough to park on the road before the trail. A must-do hike!

Easy trail (for me) with very beautiful views.
Highly recommended. The only downside is the business of this trail.

What I mean by easy for me: I haven’t done any super hard trails in WA or anywhere for that matter. I’ve been hiking occasionally ever since I remember. Did about 3 hikes the past summer (not many :( ). Athletic in general but have worked out only about once per week recently.

Beautiful place. The hike was easy but a bit long for my daughter and boyfriend. The lower trail is much better than the upper. The lower trail fallows the creek and is up and down The upper trail is a long gentle grade up and a long gentle grade down. It would be great for jogging but it’s not very scenic. The lake was beautiful and the views of the mountains is glorious. I would do it again for sure.

Wow. I have done “hard” hikes and I didn’t expect anything like this. Most challenging hike I have ever done. Straight up the whole way and scaling rocks for a mile. But wow the views are amazing and totally worth it!!

We got to the trailhead around 9:30 today and the parking lots was mostly empty, when we returned around 2:30 it was slammed! We started at the lower parking lot and went counter clockwise (if you’re looking at the bathrooms, to the right). This meant we had a fairly steep incline for the first 1.5 miles (and it felt like it just kept going!), but we were super glad we didn’t start at the upper lot and then have to go up the steep stairs at the end (these would start the hike if you went left from the bathrooms). It was busy in places but largely not too bad at all. There were lots of dogs off leash on the trail which is really dumb. There’s a good bit of narrow spaces and scramble areas and we definitely saw these dogs getting underfoot of others. Fall colors were gorgeous and I’m glad we got this hike in before the season ended! The hike was quite muddy and there were some icy patches but not bad. We did okay without poles, but my knee might be happier if I’d used them. Is it the hardest hike? No. Is it an easy walk through nature? Also no.

Crazy amounts of gorgeous! Started at Artist Point parking lot north end. Went clockwise. Finished at west end of Visitor center parking lot & ended with the mega staircase before crossing street to our parking lot. This is a full-package hike!

trail is great, we'll maintained. more moderate than easy. really pretty woods and falls. weekends are packed, and there were some dog owners with their dogs off leash (and not well behaved) which was not great. would go back, but would be more careful on timing to avoid the crowds.

Be aware of potholes, drive carefully and arrive early for a parking spot. Did the hike on Saturday morning and some sections were very icy, I fell even with trekking poles and saw a lady fall hard luckily she was ok. Just be careful and take your time, some scrambling at the top but well worth it. The day was clear and gorgeous views of Baker and Rainier.

Beautiful day on Saturday the 13th on the mountain. At the top there was some ice on boulders that was difficult to navigate, a lot of people fell and one hit his head on the rock pretty hard. Be careful, bring spikes and poles, but definitely check it out!

I have done this hike on day. Which was very pretty but to capture the beauty one must go at sunrise. We ventured to mountain at 4 am arrived Park 5:45 and headed off we got to lookout probably 45 min to hour. It was very windy and cold when arrived lookout. We stayed up there till sunrise about 7:15 and headed down.

The stars were amazing, my rainier in the shadows was absolutely stunning of course we could not capture those pics with iPhone. Then the sunrise was stunning as it came up the reflection hitting Rainier was stunning!

I would hike to see the sunrise every year here. There was no clouds in

Beautiful fall day for my first trip up to see Pete. As others have said, it is a very steep hike once you leave the main trail that goes from Ira Springs to Dirty Harry’s. Although I wanted to traverse over to Defiance, I didn’t have quite enough time remaining in the day, so went down the steep trail. Beautiful views at the top.

Great for a day hike. Views are rewarding. Fairly easy along the route. The lookout itself is at the end of the hike and looks nice from the ridge half a mile before the end of the hike. Amazing views of mount Rainier and a couple of its glaciers.

Did it yesterday. The view is awesome. I don't think it is a hard trail, comparing with other hard trail. It took me 4.5 hour to finish, including stop for picture shooting time.

Nice hike. Great payoff. Tracked it as 5.7 miles not 4.8. 3-4 hours total. Get there early.

Loved it .

Wifey and I took the four kiddos on this trek. We had to carry two of them on our backs. The first 2-3 miles were just up hill. The lake at the end was well worth it though!

Couple sites on the way to camp over night
Severe pot holes
Not much scenery on the way up
Great trail wide and well maintained

amazing hike and amazing views!!!!! the weather was perfect, saw 3 mountains. very bumpy road but totally worth it!

Loved this hike! Watched a proposal on top- the weather was amazing, view was great, go do it. Bring $30 cash or you will get a ticket. Good tires recommended as you must drive on a long and bumpy dirt road.

Drove down from Vancouver BC today to do this one and Skyline Divide. I consider neither one hikes, more like pretty nature walks. Pretty views with very little effort did however leave me feeling pretty unaccomplished but my puppy loved it. Way too busy

Awesome views! Had a great time in the lookout

This was our first hike in Washington during our vacay. We started at around 7:30am, the parking lot was pretty empty. The weather was great and the trail was dry so no chances of slipping on rocks. The trail was surprisingly easy, it might of been because we were really excited to start our week of multiple hikes. We ended up taking only 2 hours out and back to complete the hike. there is a good amount of rock scramble to the top, We stopped at the summit to eat and take photos but it was heavily trafficked going the way down. I suggest going earlier if you want to beat the crowds. I would recommend doing this hike! I also saw doggies the size of our roommates cat complete the hike so its deff dog friendly.

Beautiful hike!
