Love this trail. When I went I only saw three or four other people along the entire trail. You can also connect to the Appalachian Trail and hike a lot farther. Makes for a great day all in all. Best of all, its dog friendly. Can't wait to go back when the rhododendrons are blooming!

Very pretty waterfalls. Highly recommend it. I would say this trail is moderate and strenuous going back up.

One of my favorite hikes in Boone. The view at the top is fantastic!!

Awesome trail, there are some slick rocks so be careful

Fantastic hike with great falls. Trail is hard to find (not well marked). Entrance is off the picnic area.

I hiked the full loop from the base yesterday. Cedar Ridge trail up to Brinegar cabin then across the park on the Bluff Mountain trail before coming back down the mountain on Flat Rock Ridge. Please do not attempt the full loop unless you are in very good physical condition. It was 17.4 miles total, and I think this time of year (late March) is a great time for it as the lack of foliage means that the entire length of the trail has gorgeous views. This is one of my favorite places.

a little scary with the strong wind but I suppose it made the trip more fun in a sense. amazing views for such a short hike

Nice views of hanging rock and Flat Shoals

Great trails. Excellent signage on trail. Different trails for different levels of hiking...you can make your hike easy or hard. Park is super cleans and very well maintained!!!

I wouldn’t exactly say this is “hard”; my 11 and 13 year old kids did it without a problem. Gets the blood flowing and the heart pumping for sure, though. The view at the top is 360° of beauty. Do it! So worth it!!

Wonderful views throughout this rocky trail. Trail is highlighted by boardwalks that have been built at various locations to protect delicate wildlife while also providing stunning views.

Great technical run up to an amazing panoramic view of the mountain range including the Linn Cove Viaduct. not a difficult ascent but watch your footing. lots of rocks and roots. Totally worth the effort. take the trail the other direction to an amazing bridge over a waterfall. getting there is a few miles though.

excellent adventure. beautiful water falls. we hiked down from the Hebron Falls sign to the bottom of the falls and climbed the boulders back up to the top. some of the rock climbing can be slippery and there are several dangerous spots if caution isn't used. but totally manageable and remarkably beautiful.

This is a great place with beautiful views & well worth our drive from Hickory! The Vertical Mile Trail will definitely kick your butt but it’s a good challenge! Coming back soon to hike the other trails we didn’t get to do.

I absolutely loved this trail! There’s lots of rocks so be careful!!! But it was super fun and the views were amazing!

This trail is a advance trail and straight up almost the whole time. My daughter and I are new to hiking , this trail was out of our league. All trails has made a mistake classifying this as moderate. We did finally make it to over look but was hard to do. All in all view is worth it.

Buffalo Mtn. Is approx. a 1 mile hike from the parking lot. It's a little hard to find the first time but well worth the effort. It has an elevation gain of close to 600 ft. in that mile but is switched-backed so as not to be too strenuous. At the top there is an almost 360 degree view and looking southward you can see Pilot Mtn. NC. on most days. With a good set of binoculars the skyline of Winston Salem can just be made out a little distance to the East of Pilot Mtn. (look at the base of the sloping mountain range). Be aware that the wind blows often at the top so take a sweater just in case.

Walked whole loop with my son, in Sept 2017. It was beautiful. Not a lot of scenery due to foliage. It was a great experience. Started at campsite: took Bluff Mtn Trail, down the mountain on Flat Rock Ridge and then back up mountain on Cedar Ridge Trail and then back to campground.

Me and my friend had a great time hiking this trail. It was a beautiful day. We’re both a little out of shape but we were able to complete it without much struggle. There’s a lot of great rock formations and the view is amazing

Not hard, per se, but a sure heart-pumper if you take the loop trail first and finish with the direct descent back to the parking area. Definitely worth the payoff view at the top.

Basing my stars on Stone Mountain, BUT I am going there in two weeks, which direction should I go for the quickest route to the best features? What are the best features? Bluff Mountain and Alligator Back shelter. Thanks for any info:)

This trail and the Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area are hidden jewels in Alexander County in the Vashti area. The Vertical Mile Challenge (VMC) is true to its name—a challenging 2.2 mile trail that uses some of the Hollow Trail paths. After 8 laps you’ve climbed 5,280 feet vertically. Best time to visit is late-September when the park lights up with bunches and bunches of tiny yellow flowers—very beautiful and surreal. Many other activities at the park too like rock climbing, nature trails, picnicking, ranger talks, and nature displays.

Loved this trail! Super rocky on the way up... a fun challenge! Great view at the top!

Well worth the hike to the top. Note...AllTrails shows hike from the bottoms of the road, making it a 4 mile hike. You can actually keep driving up the gravel road until you reach the parking lot capable of parking about 14 cars. From there the hike is only 1.5 miles approx to the top or park at bottom of gravel road for the full 4 mike hike. Well worth it either way. Some the most beautiful 360 views of unspoiled farmland, meadows and Appalachian mountains. Very peaceful and relaxing.

Very nice moderate hike. The falls are beautiful. Wear correct footwear, areas are slippery and trail can be very muddy after rain. Great outing to pack a lunch and carry it on your back.

Great cardio, very light traffic on the trail even on a weekend. The parking lot, picnic area and lake was packed but this trail was quite. Incredible views at the top

Perhaps we missed it. But we could not find the lower falls. Just ended up on a horse trail.

I really enjoyed this hike. I went after one of the snowfalls so there was barely anyone of the trail and the views were gorgeous. I am excited to come back and do this one again in the Fall.

Fun rock climbing experience for sure. Wouldn’t recommend taking dogs, they may slip and fall easily. Make sure you wear shoes with good grip. Would be really fun to do when it’s warm outside.
