It was a nice hike. The beginning section of the trail was flooded by a stream and hard to get around. Seems to be a common problem as they have made an alternate path a little higher up. My 5 year old and I enjoyed the 3.4 mile hike. Great for kids.

Beautiful views throughout. Lots of climbing. We had a blanket of snow so it looked extra magical. Took us just under 2 hours. Great views up top.

This is easily one of my favorite hikes I’ve ever done. Weather was perfect, very low traffic. The hike was smooth until the rock scramble and then I only had to slow down for a few couples who I followed for a bit to get acclimated to it as I had never done that much scrambling. Luckily they noticed I was moving at a fairly quick pace and happily let me pass once I got comfortable with navigating the boulders. A few false summits but the views there were great. I didn’t realize how gorgeous the view from the true summit was but it totally didn’t disappoint. The walk down the fire road was longer than I thought it would be but it wasn’t unbearable by any means just a little less exciting than the actual trail. 10/10 would hike again but definitely only in late fall/early winter.

the South Valley Trail part very nice.
private the whole way

Wow! Perfect hike for a fall day. Ranger station said 9.5 miles, app said 8.5 miles, GPS said 9.5 miles. We ran into quite a few hikers, which we didn't mind. I recommend going with someone as some spots were quite difficult. The rock scrambling section was a lot longer and harder than expected. I am 5'9" and I feel like some sections would have been much more difficult if shorter. If you need hiking poles, I don't recommend this hike. You need both hands to help with scrambling and some upper body strength. Wear hiking boots or trail shoes that have good grip, especially if it's wet. Overall great hike, but intense!

beautiful trail. everything about it was perfect.

Gorgeous hike. Beautiful scenery throughout hike.

Completed this trail along with the named loop. Hiked a total of 3.5 miles.

The earliest you start the better. The more people on the trail the longer the bottleneck line is!

Awesome rock scramble

11-17, took us 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete. Very special hike with beautiful waterfalls. Lots of elevation gain (abt 2200 ft.)

This is an awesome trail with beautiful mountain views. The rock scrambles were challenging and the trail had many unique features. The hike took us about 5 hrs and 15 minutes to complete. We started at 8 AM. Almost 3000 ft of elevation gain. We had enough energy to do a shorter hike afterwards.

11-18, Took us 2hr 40 mins to complete. Spectacular views along the Potomac. I think I’ve have given it a 5-star rating if it was an out and back but I didn’t love the 2nd half (away from the water). Overall a really nice hike. Not too much elevation gain.

Not too long, not too short. Has equal amount ease and steepness to challenge you!

June 2018- took us a little over 3.5 hours. We left at 9 AM and parking was fine. Saw the ATC, pretty views of the Potomac and Harpers Ferry.

We went to this trail last Sunday. Not overly strenuous or crowded on a warm autumn day. Muddy in sections which is to be expected after it rained the day before. It’s a nice walk in the woods with minimal elevation. It’s been overlooked by us for the more popular park trails in the past. Well marked past the visitor center from the parking lot (on the left hand side). If you have a national parks pass entrance to the pay lot is free! Took us about 1.5 hours

Hike this trial yearly. Trail can get really crowded with inexperienced hikers causing long lines at the rock scrambles. I recommend hiking in in the off season or at night to catch the sunrise and to avoid crowds. If you do the sunrise hike it takes about 2-3 hours, depending if your hiking abilities, from the parking lot to the submit. I do not recommend this hike to those that are not physically fit, or able to do some minor rock climbing.

TONS of water and high water crossings on Nov 25th. Had to take our shoes off and wade knee deep in ice cold water. Make sure you take poles and water shoes for water crossings on this hike! Lots of climbing up front which was awesome. We added another loop to make it a 9.5 mile hike. Took our large group 5.5 hours to complete.

This is definitely a hard trail. Mostly for the rock scrambling part. You can still get to the summit without the rocks if you park at the other parking lot and walk from the Berry Hollow fire trail. The rock scrambling is lots of fun and lots of work for a short woman like me. But totally worth it!

Straight up and down through switchbacks. Definitely tiring on the way up, but the overlook is so worth it. Make sure to have solid footwear with ankle support for the rocky way down.

Easy in terms of elevation, but great hike which makes up for it in distance. From car back to car we clocked 8.57 miles and i think we deviated from this exact loop very insignificantly, but if you’re looking to stretch your legs this is a great hike. We did it in 3.5 hours with a dog and maybe 30 minutes in hanging out at the cascades. Gets very muddy and wet in the lower lying areas. If you’re not into mud, this might not be the trail for you.

Super easy hike, amazing views but super crowded at the top (even in 22 degree weather!). We had our two dogs with us and we passed lots of other dogs on the way, so make sure your furry friends are well behaved!

Chilly weather gave us the trail pretty much to ourselves. Some precarious icy spots-bring sticks if you have them. views along path are wonderful and the view from the top was stunning!! A new favorite hike!!

awesome views!!

Great views from Buzzard Rock!!

Nice, easy hike. Icy on this day though making the trail slippery in spots. We were a group of 7 ranging from 13 to 60. All found it to be an easy outing with a rewarding view. Little crowded at the top. Great starting point with water and restrooms.

Our favorite hike of all time!!

Excellent, a little icy on this Thanksgiving Day, poles will help.

Beautiful. Challenging but doable. Will definitely go back.
