Great hike experience! We went after rain so the trail was really muddy, other than that it's a good trail. love the view on top. I expected it to be much easier than it was.

Beautiful views of the Bay. Pretty easy hike. Watch out for mud and some slipping. I would recommend this as a after family hike.

This is a wonderful trail that isn’t for the weak hearted. It is an all uphill experience that is well worth the reward of the views overlooking the majestic hills and clear blue water.

Obviously, the decent is the easier part, but be sure to watch your steps on the way up as it can be very steep, slippery (during the fall and winter months), and at times very much like an obstacle course of rocks and small boulders.

During the summer months there is very little shade, so bring sunscreen and/or proper coverage. Be sure to bring a lot of water, sturdy shoes, and possibly snacks for the views up top. This is a year around hike that many people enjoy - all friendly hikers.

Great hike. Accidentally went off the trail several times and ended up spending almost 4 hours on it, but the views were amazing. No water or toilets on the trail so be prepared. Reeally steep slopes at the beginning but it gets easier later. Appropriate footwear is highly recommended, especially if it has rained recently. Overall, an amazing workout for the day... More than I had expected.

This was a great tail. Very muddy/slippery in places (came early January) so use caution. Offers amazing views from the top of Lake Berryessa and the valley. It is difficult as the uphill climb can be brutal in places, but if you’re up for the challenge then I would highly recommend!

There was a week of rain, a day of clouds, and this trail helped me celebrate the sunshine. It was wet and there was some mud, but it wasn't impassible. Gorgeous views and very little traffic once you're off the pavement.

One of my favorite East Bay trails to date! Not too difficult, but enough of a climb to feel like you’re moving. Beautiful views in both directions. Wasn’t too crowded on a nice Saturday morning. A little muddy following some rain, but easily doable. Will come back!

The hills are green again. Great early morning hike. Views of downtown SF and the surrounding bay area.

Great views of the lake.
I would say this is a very difficult hike. Switch backs, stairs and bouldering add to its difficulty. Also, slippery conditions throughout the trail.
I would absolutely do it again, but there is little shade so likely in fall or winter months.

So beautiful. Extraordinary experience for life.

Enjoyable. Not super challenging. Went w Cece. Company was amazing, trail was lovely, but nothing particularly special. Occasions views were green and blue in the winter rains good. Frankly really difficult to identify where the trail was sometimes, so being a phone that will have service to track. AllTrails was helpful.

Awesome day hike! We went on a January sunny afternoon and took the “shorter” trail straight to the top. Yeowch! Beautiful and steep with switchbacks. It took us about 45min to get up there. Gorgeous views of Lake Berryessa, but little did we know that the absolute gorgeous views were waiting for us on the longer hike down. Well, we had to traverse a few more peaks and ridge lines before we actually started moving down in elevation, but the views from those ridges were fabulous and being a little later in the day, the lighting was great for photos. We left vehicle around 1:15p, got to top around 2-ish. Dinked around for about 30-45min, then started the trek down. Got back to car at 5:15p - right when sun was saying goodbye. Would love to do it again, this time in the opposite direction and maybe hike over to see the homestead ruins. Bring water, sunscreen and layers.

We really enjoyed the hike. Very crowded on the paved trail, but majority of traffic was gone once got on the dirt. Some nice hills for this old and out of shape hiker and great views of the reservoir and Mount Diablo. We will definitely be doing this hike again before it starts heating up. Looks like it could be a hot and dusty summer hike/run. But, was great today in spite of a little mud from recent rains.

Awesome trail with amazing views.

Nice place to smoke a joint. Also there is a sweet swing about halfway up in the grove of trees on the left

I gather from recent comments that as of 1/12/19 the trail is open. Which answers 1 out of 3 of my questions. The other two are:
1. Are dogs allowed on the trail?
2. Is there a parking or trail fee? If yes, how much is it?
Thanks,
Craig

It was a beautiful, crisp day here today. This is a great hike with awesome views of Lake Berryessa and the surrounding areas, and the trail is well maintained by UC Davis. Quite a bit of steep incline and there are stretches without shade due to a wildfire in 2015, but definitely worth it overall. There are lots of cool birds and other animals to spot. Will definitely come back!

Great day of hiking. It will pop your cork.

Close to Yountville. A bit rocky/steep at some spots but a good moderate hike with views of the Wine valley and lake on the other side.

Beautiful crisp New Year Day hike. Lower layer foliage is growing in nicely around the burned trees from 2015 fires. Great views, and gratefully was not a hot day since there isn’t much shade.

oooooweeee...this is a burner and the uphill is steep. Definitely was a challenge for me physically and mentally. I would say that I am in moderate shape and I have to admit I will be doing this one again one of these days just not any time soon. I think I need to build up my endurance and uphill hiking capabilities. I'm sure there were great views...I just didn't see any since I was focusing on putting one foot in front of the other and getting through it...hahaha

Really fun, dynamic hike. Views from the Sierras to the Coast Range, and all across Lake Berryessa. Lots of variation in the trail from steep switchbacks to gradual grades and even some bouldering along the spine of the ridge. Really comfortable hike during the winter but I imagine that it would be grueling from May to September. Can't wait to go back and try the Tuleyome Loop.

I completed this hike today after failing to find the turn for the loop last weekend. I don't hike staring at my phone, and following the signs on the trail, I eventually ended up on a paved road and turned around to make it an out-and-back hike on my first try. The path for the turn is very small, narrow, and rocky, and near Arroyo Trail. Navigational faux pas aside, this is a nice 2-hour outdoor workout. The inclines are steady rather than overwhelming, and the rocky path is a great contrast to a gym environment. I like the benches and views of the Bay and SF, the easy parking (I like arriving around 9am though!), and the reliable outdoor toilets near the trailhead. Good times!

I’m 57 years old and this hike kicked my butt. The ridge has many boulders and can be a bit disorienting I thought navigating the trail ridge was the most difficult -and I started on the switchback trail.! Take plenty of water and give yourself plenty of extra time.

We did this loop as a trail run/hike counterclockwise. Walking up the steep paved road to start was good since running down that grade at the end would have been challenging, especially for my knees. The views at the top are spectacular! The rocky ridge portion of the trail had a decent amount of people on a sunny Sunday. If I did it again I would have cut out the sycamore portion. It started out great but a majority of the trail was overgrown bushes. I though for sure I’d have some sort of rash at the end of that portion. The devils hole trail was great. The way we went, it consisted mainly a uphill hike, but with great views. My all trails log said 6.6 miles and it took us 2.5 hours. I clearly was walking slow up these hills ;) to run it again, I may have just stayed up on the ridge and did more back and forth, but doing the full loop was defiantly a killer cardio workout.

Nice views, some pretty steep parts and not much shade though.

Beautiful trail, BUT WATCH OUT FOR TICKS. Did this trail December 30, 2018 and found a tick on myself after the hike.

Great hike. Amazing views. Elevation change can be a bit strenuous but totally worth it. I also really enjoyed going through the welcome center at the summit.
