Not hard, moderate at best. No hard climbs, but a few of them add up. First one on the trail at 9:30 on a Sunday morning, lightly trafficked is accurate. I went after the leaves fell, so lots of crunching underfoot. I can see how it would be difficult after a solid rain, it was dry on my venture. No access to the lake unless you trailblaze a bit on your own. Different topography hiking along the ridge, but lots of time in the forest with not much to see. Lake is very pretty, but you’re never real close to it unless you go off trail.

Probably one of the more impressive waterfalls I've seen. It's easy to lose the trail in between Virgin Falls and Sheep's Cave, so heads-up. I did this on a Thursday morning, and I only saw a handful of people the whole time. I had my dog with me, and we stopped at each waterfall for a bit, so it took me 5 or 6 hours.

Good trail anytime except when it’s hot outside. If you take this trail during the summer months, bring bug spray suitable for the construction of another Panama Canal

This is a strenuous hike. lots of rocks and boulders. if you love water falls this trail has plenty of falls.

Trail to the bottom of the falls is a little confusing. It becomes more difficult to get to the falls the further down you go. But the overlook path is short, clear, and absolutely beautiful!

Good walk in the woods. Probably just missed the best fall colors. Well marked with good parking at the trailhead.

The trail is interesting but not very well defined. The worst part is that a lot of people use the trail to walk their dogs. They tend to ignore the leash requirement and make no attempt to pick up their pets' poop. There are poop bags available at the trail head, but I have yet to see someone with one in hand. Actually stepped on poop during one of my runs. I have run the trail a half a dozen times and have never seen any park staff on the trail nor any law enforcement in the area. Lovely place but poorly managed and insecure.

Great hike

Falls was well worth the hike. Being from Michigan where it is flat, I was pretty tired the last half of the hike on the way out as I was not used to the up and down. Was not as in shape as I thought either. Lol. Also did some geocaching along the way. Very much enjoyed this hike.

Pretty, very easy hike. We took our small dog for the first time and she had no problems.

Trail to the bottom of the falls was closed for repairs. Would have liked a little bit of a longer hike but the trail was really nice.

Great trail for day hike or overnight backpacking trip.

Great hike on the stream trail to the falls. Bring some water shoes and a towel as you cross stream twice each way.

Lovely hike. Go right at the trailhead so you end with the falls!

I really enjoyed this trail. Fall colors were beautiful. Sinkholes were amazing. I am from So Cal so this was very different from what I see here. We also stopped to see Jackson Cave. Very enjoyable I would do it again.

Wow. What’s not to love. The hike was beautiful and kid + dog friendly. To get to the bottom of the downstream trail there is a big section that is narrow with a steep drop and no guard rail so if your walking children are not familiar with trail safety I would consider that but otherwise it’s fantastic. Our kids (9 and 6) have hiked since they were babes on my back and still exercised extreme caution during the before mentioned part. But at the end and in the water (despite the frigid temps) they lived every minute of it. It was a perfect stop to picnic on a rock and then watch them explore. Highly recommend this trail!

The main to and from Virgin Falls is traveled a lot. I went backpacking on a rainy day and I passed 12 or so day hikers. The trail is rocky in portions and this trail is moderate, not sure why the trail is rated hard rating. "People" not backpackers, just can not leave TRASH at the falls, just plain lazy! I have found that short hikes, less than 10mile one way, are like this.

We really enjoyed this trail and falls was gorgeous at the end!! Several of the camp sites were occupied but we were told of a couple alternate locations. The hike is fairly strenuous on the way back as most of it is uphill. We chose to set up camp earlier in the trail to reduce weight for the rest of our hike. Numerous places for swimming holes (if it were warm weather). Definitely coming back again!

Very fun trail, very secluded for the majority of the trail. Not well maintained however so you have to go off trail sometimes, not a trail for beginners.

Don’t go during hunting season! Had planned to hike from the trailhead to Welch’s Point and back. Closed for hunting events. Soooo we heeded the warnings. Parked and did the short trek to Welch’s. Plan B - back to Virgin Falls trailhead. Did a 5 mile loop out to Martha’s Pretty Point. ‘‘Twas a great great day!

This place is pretty amazing. It has it all... rivers, waterfalls, meadows, and lots of history (as told through the museum and trail markers). I took my dog and she had an amazing time running with me through the meadow, hiking the trails, and playing in the river. We saw a huge blue heron and a herd of deer in the meadow. It’s a magical place! The only complaint I have is what others noted - the trail is just dreadfully marked. I spent 2 hours essentially wandering around looking at my GPS here on AllTrails and trying to figure out where I was, as did nearly everyone I passed. The problem is threefold: there are multiple trails and spurs (not just “a loop”), AllTrails is not accurate here (not even close), and again, trails are poorly marked. An old pro told me to stop next time at the museum to get a trail map, which I had foregone since I had my trusty AllTrails. I am not deterred though despite some frustration... this place is too great for that. I’ll be back again, and next time I’ll be sure I have a paper map and will keep my phone in my pack. Can’t wait to come back!!

This is a beauty in the fall.

Tough but nice. Technical in many places. The campsites were awesome.

Great trails with several water falls!

awesome

Really nice trail with a beautiful waterfall! You have to go thru creek to get to the falls which me and my sister was able to rock hop and we never got wet. We only did the Machine Falls Loop which was around 1 .5 miles.

Beautiful hike. My wife and I hiked Virgin Falls in a day, left out around 8 AM in a foggy drizzle and by the time we reached Virgin Falls it was sunny and perfect. We did the main trail, spur to overlook, sheep cave, top of the falls and bottom of the falls and came in just over 11 miles total. Both Big Laurel Falls and Virgin Falls are pretty awesome. The trail has some sections over rocks on the descent in/ascent out that I would assume give the trail it's rating...they were tough, but not too bad. Once you reach Virgin Falls, I highly recommend the short climb down to the base, it's so worth it, (be careful it's muddy) and the short climb around to the top (again, so worth it!). We spent 45 minutes to an hour at Virgin Falls and at least another 30-45 at Big Laurel Falls, took our time and were still back to the lot in 7 hours total. I hiked it in chacos, the wife had boots...I could see where chacos might be an issue for some on the way down. Probably going to go back in a few weeks when the leaves are peaking. Also think it would be a great overnight and the camping options look great. Almost rated it a 5 but wasn't as well marked in some places as I expected, but still an excellent hike!

FYI- When you get to the Loop to the falls where it's 0.5 to the falls one way and 0.8 (Sheep Cave then falls) the other way, it might help to know that the shorter trek to the left is a fairly steep descent followed by a climb the last 0.2 mile or so to the falls. The slightly longer route to the right (also to the falls via Sheep Cave) is much flatter and possibly even quicker.

We took our 3 dogs through the “harder” hike and it was beautiful. However the Ridge Overlook we didn’t see an overlook at all. Gorgeous views and not rough at all! 2 overlooks we’re closed temporarily so I’ll definitely be going back to see the those at some point. Took us about an hour to go through the whole thing, but our dogs walked ya so faster than it would’ve been without him. Also very clean!

Great hike up and down to the falls. Super crowded. Way too many people for my taste, not to mention the abundance of empty water bottles, cigarette butts, and the occasional diaper thrown in for good measure. Just a matter of time before the state shuts it down.
