What can i say that hasn’t been already said. Must do if you’re in Shenandoah!!!

Always a must.

- start out as early as possible, 10am the lot is packed
- show ranger your NPS ticket so you don't get ticketed
- porter potties at the start, but there are two
outhouses near the top.
- lots of water, at least 1 liter per person
- brings snacks to munch on at the top while enjoying the views
- definitely suggest boots for ankle support
- you can get easily lost chasing the blue paint marks but it kind of makes it fun
- the natural jungle gym is incredible, yes challenging physically and mentally, but after completed I wish I would've enjoyed it more instead of stressing over my next footing or body odor
- creatures seen: Turkey vultures, bald eagle, crows, smaller birds, raccoon, bunches of insects larger beetles to moths, and a juvenile black bear!

-only negative is the amount of people, hence arrive early or camp overnight.

Challenging but super fun. Started at 8.30am on Sunday and did not see anyone, maybe because there was forecast for heavy rain but that stayed off until we were making our descent. Lucky because the rock scramble would have been so much more difficult in the rain. Took us 4.5 hours. I went with a friend who was strong and able to pull me up two times when boulders didn’t have foot holds. No way could I have done this trail without his help!

Awesome hike

Great hike, have done this a few times but this was the first time in the wet. Definitely not for children under 12 or so. After mile marker 2.5 it begins to get steep and the trail goes thru some small boulder fields which makes climbing difficult and with rain it can be even more dangerous. Be careful and have fun!

Absolutely loves hiking this. Was a challenge but once we made it to the top, it was well worth it.
The view is absolutely breath taking.

It was my first hike but I was with experienced guys and it now has me hooked on hiking. It was difficult but well worth it.

Great hike. Gradual incline due to multitude of switchbacks. Moderately strenuous for a weekend hiker. Incredible panoramic view. Make sure to pack a lunch and plan to stay a while to enjoy the view.

Great hike! completed in 5 hr. Definitely need some upper body strength if solo hiking.

Nice hike. I did this hike with my 5 year old

I loved this hike and would do it again in a heartbeat.
The cardio workout was excellent. View was wonderful!

Nice climb. My first goal-oriented hike. Consistent elevation rise.

Difficult on the way up but the virws are beautiful. Much easier on the way down. Worth the climb!

As other reviewers have mentioned, the main highlight is reaching the top and getting the spectacular view of the mountains! I found it to be worth it for a day hike. There are tons of switchbacks but nothing too difficult. The trail was nice and well-maintained. Lots of shade as you are in tree cover 99% of the hike. Even though I did see what looked like a few places to camp not far from the top, I am not sure I would want to overnight camp there. Only saw a handful of people either way. Its a hike worth doing to see it for yourself!

Excellent workout. I've done this up and back in one day. The ladders with high winds are a bit unnerving, hold onto your hat and camera. Always worth every step.

This one has it all....great views, length, technical elements. Be prepared to spend several hours doing the hike if you're going to Calloway's peak and back. It joins the Grandfather Trail in time to get some of the best elements - the chute, the ledge and the alpine meadow...not to mention the peak. If it's been raining, the lower couple of miles gets pretty slippery due to the clay. The steps added to the new section (trailhead to where it joins the old trailhead) help with traction. Fantastic hike!!

Made the hike from Black Mountain Campground to the summit and back 30 times in the last five years. My favorite time for this hike in in the fall. This was on my bucket list. There are two decent water sources. Expect lots of roots and rocks on much of the trail. Some of the trail uses an old creek bed. Be prepared for aburpt weather changes. The trail is becoming better maintained because of those hard young dedicated workers.

An easy calming walk up 3,700 feet of elevation climb...jokes aside it is a fun, strenuous walk. The majority is under tree cover, with an occasional stream or brook. But the end is worth it l, with an open summit area.

Awesome hike! Very challenging. Difficult for shorter people or those without upper arm strength. If bribing a bag, make it a small one as some of the rock passes are very narrow. Went in late March and had to pay for overflow parking as it was so crowded.

Favorite Hike in NC so far! Did it early September and it was nice and cool, a little rain which helped cool us off also! Did the profile trail to the grandfather which added some mileage but didn't have to pay, and then hitchhiked back to the profile trailhead from grandfather mountain!

Great views!

I can't give this anything better than "average" until they reopen the full trail. Pretty tough hike for anyone not in shape, straight up most of the way with a few views. End section to the Chimney Tops is closed (gated and spiked). Park Service built a little overlook pad but doesn't compare at all to the chimney tops. Park Service needs to make reopening this a priority!

Very clean trail, I love the hike going up. The summit is one of the the best I have seen.

So many steps but a very nice view once you hit the top. Unfortunately the second half is still closed but you still get a great view of the mountains and the chimney top.

Amazing view at the top! The climb through the rocks remains the highlight of the hike.

Our group really enjoyed the hike. It becomes easier when you do it with a group. Towards the end of the trail there are lot of steps ,good to be prepared for that. Trails has lot of beautiful water falls . Beautiful hike overall

This hike is a beast but a beautiful and rewarding beast. Go early and prepare for it to be an all day excursion, especially since it does get backed up with this hike being so popular. Wear the right shoes, bring plenty of water and snacks. The beginning is uneventful switch backs that feel like they never end. Then you will have a few moments where you think WOW I've finally made it! But be patient, because you in fact have not. Don't lose hope because the view at the top is OUTSTANDING and worth the struggle. Love love love the challenging rock scrambles, so much fun! This is definitely an accomplishment and one for the books!

Who hasn’t hike this mountains. Strenuous it is the switchbacks in the beginning can be boring but once you get to the scrambles the fun starts. Fantastic views at the summit. Just when you think you reached the summit you realize it’s a false summit.
