Great trail! Lots of off shot paths up to the ruins of the town for more of a challenge or down to the river for some peace. Bring bug spray! We were eaten up by bugs by the damn!!

Great trail, a little too crowded in the summer weekends.

Great hiking trail with beautiful views. Be prepare to climb lots of stairs. We went up Major Welsh and came down it too.

We went up the Appalachian Trail first and though I'm not an avid hiker i was thinking, wow this is pretty easy - it's just a lot of stairs until the last part where it was more "nature-y" to the top. Views were great! Then we went down the Major Welch portion and i cursed the whole way down! Definitely lots of steep rocks and scrambling that I wasn't prepared for! But i did a lot of crab walking with my hands for balance and made it finally. I see a lot of people recommending going up MW and down AT and I'd recommend it if you're a less experienced hiker or have kids with you!

Amazing trail, lots of stairs so prepare!

A favorite urban hike

Great trail, great views. We had perfect weather. Going up is work, over the rocks but totally worth it.

It was a good time challenging uphills and fun down hills

has some nice swamp areas and birding but the traffic noise is a bit of a distraction

awesome trail..

The trail along the waters edge is quite rocky. - Lots of roots to trip over in that section too. - All the trails in this area are not marked very well so carry a backup map and be sure to use your All/Trails App. - To many Yellow trails. - If you are coming on a weekend, go early or late because parking is limited. -- The trails are well defined but not much maintenance is being done here. – Very overgrown so beware of Ticks. No access to drinking water so be sure to carry plenty. If you get it from the upper stream it’s best to Filter it. Better save then sorry.

Way too many different little trails, easy to get lost. 2 and a half hours total, easy/easy-moderate, very few steep hills. Good markings. Good amount of dogs (must be leashed).

loop trail takes 1-2hours. The climbing is interesting. The view is good. Very busy during the peak time. Parking is 10 bucks.

This is a nice 5 mile hike. Most of it is in the woods and it ends along a lake. All Trails labeled it easy. The sign at the park says difficult. I’d go with moderate. It’s rocky and there are some up hill stretches. The trail is very clearly marked. You can begin and end at a picnic area with bathroom facilities. There’s a sign at the park entrance that says “pets prohibited.”

great trail lots to see !

Parts currently under construction. Otherwise would be a 5 star

This trail is also known as the Major Welsh Red Dot Trail. It is not the staircase trail. It is awesome if you like some moderate rock scrambling, with less intensity than Breakneck Ridge. Highly recommended for a short, semi-rugged, day hike with excellent views at top and a nice moderate descent.

One of my fave spots with the pup though signage is confusing - no blazes just names and signs are wonky so I always get lost. Always. But I always find my way out eventually too. Great river playing for Dogs too. Easy enough but a beautiful space

The trail itself it’s not particularly difficult it’s got about two steep inclines. The only draw back is there is a section of the trail where there is a large collection of trash; i.e. beer bottles, rusted metal items. Aside from that, which could be a park maintenance problem, it’s a lovely hike!

I started at the Dulaney Valley Rd trailhead and ran to Warren Rd, then back. As others have said, these trails are not well marked and it's tough to find where the trail continues when you get to clearings under the power lines. The portions closest to the reservoir shoreline are very overgrown. An app or GPS is a must.

But, that means you generally will have the trail to yourself. I was out mid-morning on a Sunday and saw only a handful of people.

Nice oasis in the city with actual trails to run. Wasn’t too busy for a weekday evening.

Really great and less frequently traveled trail. Going over the bridge gives you a great view of the Potomac and there is a statute of Teddy Roosevelt on the island. Very easy hike, gets muddy after rain however. You can go swimming at certain points but take caution; it's swim at your own risk.

Great trail with lots of shade. I’d rate it on the tougher side of moderate but, by no means hard. There are several spots where you need to cross shallow streams but, nothing crazy. We did this trail with my three kids (15,13 and 9) and dog and was a thumbs up for all. Also, there was very little people traffic at the time. Sunday of Father’s Day which I thought would be busy. Definitely worth a try.

Southern half of trail is in excellent condition and not difficult (though of course involves assent/descent) but the northern half is very much a work in progress (2018)...easy to lose trail in which case (though eventually one does reach summit) one is occasionally in for a tough climb.

I've been taking my puppy here for awhile- nice walk and hike. Easy to get down to the patuxent river for him to cool down. A lot of runners and dogs - overall very peaceful.

Clean, quiet

More moderate than easy if you do the whole loop. But fantastic trail and a great place for kids.

Good urban escape

Definitely should get to the parking lot at the Inn early if you get there early enough there’s plenty of parking, heads up unless you don’t mind hiking back up the mountain to the tower after you finish this loop you should definitely park your car at the Parking lot next to the Inn. Besides that great trail !
