BackpackingGreat!

Great adventure! Probably moderate for a experienced hiker, easy for an experienced backpacker. The trail is well marked for the first part, then when it gets to be just rocks it’s a little harder to follow. But with the AllTrails map you should be fine. My four college-aged friends and I did it as an overnight. Started at 10am, made it to the canyon at 3:30pm. Left the next day around 9:30am, made it back at 3pm. Sunrise was awesome!

WalkingGreat!Rocky

During this hike, we started at 9am then we made it just in time before sunset around 7:30pm! This was probably the most exhausting yet astonishing journey ever! You won’t believe how bad the heat was coming back, and the amount of water and food we had not to mention our dark tans and sunburns! But, after a 19 mile walk we finally made it! :)

It’s a bit hard to follow the trail with a lot of snow you must have a good GPS map and confidence to go forward.

Lots of snow, beautiful scenery. Snowshoes a good idea.

Snowshoe adventure. We tried to make it to the waterfall but we were losing light. AllTrails map download a must as there is rarely any signage. Perhaps when it is not covered with snow it is easier to follow. Beautiful and peaceful trail!

Road in was snow covered, no snow on hike. Great views! Overnight temps in the low 20s/teens.

Summited Dec 24, 2020. Left trailhead at 7:30am and returned at 5pm, dawn to dusk. I was probably the only person of that day summitting Mount Rose. Trail was well packed for a mile or so, after which it was snowshoe territory right before the summit. In winter conditions, the first half of final ridge climb, right after intersection between Mount Houghton and Mount Rose, was most difficult, as one was traversing along ~40 degree incline while navigating among trees. The north slope of Tamarack Peak was sort of a preparation for that (not the most fun, though). There seemed to be two sets of tracks rounding Mount Houghton, it’s super-easy to slip off trail, which could be disastrous on the way down. The northern slope of Tamarack Peak had lots of ski tracks, bringing some navigational challenges if one wanted the least laborious way around. On a clear and not too windy day like that, the views of Reno and Lake Tahoe at the summit was gorgeous, and overall it’s quite enjoyable even in winter, if weather cooperates.

woke up to -3 degree weather. wind gusts over 100 mph. but amazing. lots of sand and hard/slick rock. almost no water sources unless u are a VERY experienced hiker/climber. loved it out here, easily doable in an afternoon, but id def recommend camping out at least a day.

Seeing if anyone is going in January? I’d like to do the hike but sounds like I won’t be able to do it since my car won’t make it out to the trail. If you wanna make a friend let me know! Ig- seann_oconnorr

Did this on 12/19 as a backpacking trip. Don’t go to the marked parking lot - the last downhill is gnarly. We were in a Subaru Outback. The drive is good till the last 7 miles but the outback was just fine. Do explore and go to the left once you reach the canyon - good camping sites there. We went with winter gear ( 0F bags) and 4L water each. We were cozy, comfy and had an extra liter of water each left on return. It was around 40F in the day and 20F in the night. We are so happy we went. The trail is petty easy to follow till you come to the slick rocks - look for carins and check AllTrails.

You'll need snowshoes. Winter paths don't follow the AllTrails map, it is whatever is most safe.

It was an incredible sight to see, bring plenty of water if coming in the spring time , enjoy the trail and be in aw as you get to enjoy the fall from a wooden observation point! (This has now been destroyed by a fire (as of 12/13/2020) and unfortunately will require time to recover, enjoy and appreciate what you have :)
