Not marked.. you’ll pass the “lookout” like we did and hiked into a campground. Proceed carefully. It’s pretty but just know what you’re looking for.

Trail starts with 1.5 mile walk on the road, then you reach Bluff Creek trail on the right and it meets up with Skyline. Trail is pretty well marked, only had to back track once. Water crossings were no problem, the water is low right now. That may change after heavy rain. Lots of fresh water for dogs! The sign half through that says “experienced hikers only, no water for 3 miles” was not true if doing the route clockwise as 1 mile later there was a creek. Earns difficult rating, but great experience. If doing clockwise, you get most of the climbing out of the way first half. Recommend poles on this hike, we were without. Save those knees on the downhills!

This trail doesn’t match up with the actual trail at the beginning but the park gives you a map at arrival that helps.

HikingGreat!

Beautiful trail with so many scenic views. Definitely a lot of steep inclines and declines so recommend good shoes and plenty of water. Began at the trail marked on this map and moved clockwise as suggested in other reviews. Did not realize that the “highway section” literally meant we would be walking on the highway for a stretch. Also, followed this trail map almost exactly and clocked closer to 12 miles, completing in 6 hours (this includes stops along the way). There’s a partially hidden waterfall about halfway through—highly recommend taking the side trail to see it.

Did a small portion of this trail which is very poorly marked . We got to the top of the falls where the views are awesome. Not sure we really missed anything by not following the trail. Don’t let this review discourage you from visiting the falls, that by itself was great. Heads up though. Very crowded with swimmers all through the park . Bite the bullet and go!

Great trail. Very rocky. No signs to tell you trail ends though. Trail goes right into the 2nd half of Lookout Mountain Loop

There wasn’t a good lookout spot. We also ended up on another trail that made our total 3.4 miles instead of 2.9. The trail was not always clearly marked.

HikingFee

There’s about a $6 fee to get in. This is primarily a kitschy campground which is nice for families since it has a lot of places to play in the water. However for hikers there’s not much challenge past the scramble by the waterfall. The wayfinding is non-existent and it was frustrating to believe I’d found a trail only to see there were a dozen others crisscrossed in the trees. I started on a trail labeled ‘hiking path’ which ended in a dead end in about a half mile with no clear markings of where to continue, and ended up just scrambling a hill to get some elevation. The only indication of a path in most places was the garbage littered everywhere.

Those who say the trail is easy must be extremely avid hikers in excellent shape! The trail was hard, as rated above. There are several very narrow pathways, very steep inclines and declines, and several water crossings. I went through exactly two liters of water on a 68° F day. We started around 9:45am and finished up around 4:30-4:45pm. I, personally, had trouble with the steep inclines. Another member of our 4-person group has lymphadema and specifically had trouble with the steep declines. There were several water crossings but it hadn’t rained in a couple days and they were very easy, just watch for slippery rocks. Also, on some of the steep inclines, there were some rocks that looked as though they are meant to serve as steps, but some were loose, so check your step before you put all your weight down on it. Water was easily accessible for filtering throughout most of the trail. Good trekking poles are highly recommended. Only really one good vista for Mountain View’s, but water features throughout. I highly recommend checking out the water falls more closely, as there is one that you can only see a small part of from the trail, and it feeds into what looks to be a great swimming hole with blue green water. The trail is well marked, but pay attention because there are at least two places it is easy to miss your turn. One is a water crossing, and the other is a very easy to miss spot where you are supposed to veer off of what looks to be your trail. This was a beautiful hike that is an excellent workout. The views are well worth it. If you park where suggested, walk the road portion of the trail first to get the more difficult inclines out of the way in the first 1/2 of the loop. This way, you come out at the bridge, and the views there make all the inclines and declines worthwhile!

Hiking

I would recommend parking at Cold Hole and doing the trail clockwise. This puts the more difficult parts closer to the beginning of the hike. There is a lot of elevation gain with near straight up ascents and very step descents, as well as some being on very narrow track running on the edge of steep ravines and drop offs. It’s a bit scary at times. Walk from Cold Hole down the river and road toward Cedar Bluff Nature Trail and enter the trail there. This road traverse is part of the 9 mile loop of Skyline. There are no signs directing you to Skyline so it can be a bit confusing to figure out. Keep your eye out for the red or silver hiker signs to follow the trail. They aren’t always apparent and it seems like they have chosen not to put them in the confusing spots. If you don’t see one for a while double check your location. Internet is spotty at best. Screen shot your maps and prep well so you have your bearings out there. There are some places in the general park area with two white trash cans together that emit free wifi should you need to to prepare before you set out. I highly recommend very grippy trail running shoes due to the extremely steep, rocky ascents and descents. You need a good grip on the ground. Be prepared to wade through creeks repeatedly. These can be slick. Trail running shoes are good about drying out fast. This trail is constant up down up down. We got and elevation gain of 2161ft and a total of 9.62 miles. I recorded on Strava instead of AT. We enjoyed soaking our sore legs on the cold water afterward where the trail comes out at Cold Hole. Definitely a challenging trail but beautiful and well worth it.

The hike was just ok for me. Nice hills and well marked trail but the top lookout was not as “spectacular” as we were expecting. Passed several hikers coming back down and they were let down too. It is probably due to the time of year. The trees had no foliage yet so I would still recommend.
