The trailhead to the canyon is bare, no crampons required until you get to the canyon creek. Slushy in some spots on the creek bed yet overall still frozen. 30 minutes from the start of the canyon to the cave. Great, easy hike on a windy day... don't forget those crampons though, others didn't have them and were slipping all over.

Jan 20/19 - Always a fun little hike. Trail is in great shape. Spikes are recommended for the creek portion but we managed just fine without them today. Went all the way past (to the left) the frozen falls through the canyon to a little cave. Was fun to climb up to but watch the loose dirt.

It was a great little hike with the family. Our 4.5 and 2.5 year old came along. We brought a sled and had fun with that as well. Really packed trails, this is a high traffic trail but still lots of fun. We found one troll, the kids loved it. Looking forward to do this trip in the summer as well! Jan 2019

Was packed with people and not a place for snow shoeing. My hopes were let down:( Hope the people I saw that were walking had a healthy time but again for myself I am happier with less people and using my snow shoes.

January 19, 2019: beautiful conditions, snow packed and a hard assent but well worth it. Trail was worn so it still sees occasional adventure seekers that don't let the closure warning deture them. You will be the only ones on the hill, we were, but when else will you ever get a chance to experience this mountain all to yourself?
The summit was very windy, felt exillerating pushing through the big temperature change from 2 or 3 on the ground to quite fridge at the peak, dress accordingly.... Some deep snow sections ☺️

Good for everyone, great practice hike. Beautiful frozen waterfalls at the moment.

For a decent walk with a foot problem it was a beautiful place and not too difficult of a rise. Good muscle ache after the icy in places hike. Jan 2019

Great little hike but definitely wish it was longer. Crampons or Yak Tracks are definitely useful if you’re doing it in winter. Beautiful views at the top for a short hike, though!

Trail is good. It gets handsy when you start climbing around the mountain. Lots of opportunity to go to sub peaks without wasting much time. There was a little bit of snow but not much. Views are awesome! Great weather!

Steep climb this one but worth it for the view at the top. Makes Calgary look like a tiny village! I tried to run all the way up it but it’s steep and not for the faint hearted. I had to stop a few times on the way up! Very very cold and windy at the top so wrap up warm if you are walking it. Ran all the way down easily in walking boots in 20 mins. No spikes needed as most of the track is rocky and/or earthy. Minimal snow or frost at present. Good runner will go up and down in around 75 mins. Slow walker will take 3-4hours. Highly recommend this for runners and walkers as a challenge with a reward;-)

Great day at Chester Lake today! Definite incline at the beginning to get things going but levels out further into the trail. Has been snowing pretty good but the trail is relatively packed still. Definitely recommend either snowshoes or spikes and poles. Friend did manage the trail with just hikers and poles however it made for a couple of slippery descents in areas. Got on the trailhead at 9am so it was a nice and quiet hike on the way to Chester Lake. Trail was definitely getting busier on the way down. Would do this hike again!

Great hike. Lots of skiers coming down the northern side of the loop.

Would do it again repeatedly.

I've done this hike many time! It is a great hike for everyone! Very easy and family friendly to the first waterfall. The upper falls take a bit more effort but are equally as wonderful. Lovely views, flora, and fauna to be seen!

My first ever hike. Amazing view from the top

Very nice hike. Took me two hours to do full loop. If you are wanting to do a shorter walk there is a shortcut midway so would probably take about an hour. Saw deer, wood pecker and lots of squirrels.

Some large trees fallen across path on the south side of road but easily navigatable around.

Great hike! Went on Saturday. Snow is pretty deep when you get close to Lilian lake. Make sure to bank on an extra 45 minutes compared to what you would normally hike it in. Great weather though - all in all a solid 4 hours in total. We used winter hiking boots and that’s it - no poles and no snowshoes

Hiked on Saturday was a beautiful sunny day, no need for snowshoes as it was packed snow. It was not icy at all, but spikes or poles would be helpful for the upward and downward climbs and descents. I did it with just hiking boots and poles and was just fine. For those that have not done this trail it is easy going for about a km then it’s a steady climb for approximately 2km, then it levels off. Bring something to sit on ( small tarp will do) to have your lunch or snack when you get to the top!

Did it clockwise today. Very windy once on the ridge. Good views.

Completed on Jan. 12. Very little snow and only required spikes on the back loop. If you want to extend the hike, complete the back loop ( check out prairie mountain and prairie creek route ). Different views and adds about an hour to the overall experience. Easy hike for experienced hikers; hard for beginners.

We hiked Tamnuska loop today (January 13, 2019). Most sections were dry. However, spikes are needed to reach its summit.

Excellent hike. Beautiful winter views. You would be fine to hike it with ice spikes if it has not snowed in a while.

Had a great time exploring this hike! Fun to walk the frozen stream if you’ve got spikes on. Can’t wait to see it in the summer.

Great workout! Beautiful hike! Highly recommended!

Hear about Chester Lake all the time and been wanting to try it since we moved here four years ago. Beautiful blue sky day. Fair number of cars in the lot (20 or so) when we started but when we left at 4:30 we were the only ones there. We used ice trackers. It's possible to go with just boots (trail is hard packed) but later in the day the sun warmed the snow and some of the downhill sections (it's all downhill on the way back) were really slippery. I must admit the long uphill was a little more than I expected but I made it.

Gorgeous hike. We didn’t need our snowshoes because the snow was so packed down. But, spikes were helpful. We’ll be doing this hike again soon.

The incline is a lot of work, but the top is quite stunning! Hard work pays off in this case!

So I stopped my phone at door jam for a quick break and forgot to start it again lol.... the pics show us at the summit of Loder! Great quick hike very little snow just a bit in the trees, it is def moderate as easy scramble with great holds required. There is a bit of exposure today sucked due to high winds but nothing crazy. The summit push is actually pretty mild just walking up a bit of scree.....
if you are expecting a nice hike it will be hard expect nice scramble and follow the spine of the ridge up.
