To Do (Hard) Map

View was way better than Big Beehive. Well worth the extra 45 minute scramble to the top.

Absolutely amazing 360degree views from the peak! Great hike!!

Always love this hike in the fall but this was the first winter attempt and it was stunning. Lots of elevation over a short distance but the trail is well kept and easy to follow due to its popularity.

We had a south western wind so it got a bit unpleasant out of the treeline but it’s not far from the treeline to the peak. The winds made it so cold up there my iphone wouldn’t work, sapped the battery in about 2 minutes of photos. I’d recommend tech gloves, face masks and a charger pack to anyone else looking for some great shots at the top.

We wore spikes (small ones) and used poles and that was plenty of grip and stability. Otherwise it was a fantastic sunny day and a beauty of a mountain.

Love this hike! Views are spectacular!

Some of the best views you can get so close to the city! If you have the time and patience, scramble all the way to the summit for unreal 360 degree views. The ups and downs are tiring on the way back since its about 16km round trip.

Very challenging hike, but worth it! The trail isn't well marked in the initial scramble area (taking the loop counterclockwise) making it difficult to choose the best path. I'd definitely do this hike again though.

Such a rewarding hike.

Sunny but a bit cold at the top with the wind.
Challenging hike because of the snow, the last 200 meters are tricky.
Clits not essential but recommended.
Awesome views as soon as you leave the forest.

Stunning views the whole way!

Physically challenging pretty much right out of the parking lot. A lot of undulating hills along the ridge will have you cursing on the way back. Stunning views in every direction from up top.

very challenging but once you get up there it is all worth the climb!

Great climb even with snow

Best views ever. Great trail if you can find it

Good, steep hike. 3 hours to summit and around 2.5 to decent. the views were decent.

Although this hike is listed as hard (and certainly has challenging parts) the first time I went to the heart mountain peak (2006?) I was wearing chacos sandals and didn't die. My husband and I did the horseshoe in 2017 on the family day long weekend with our 5 year old son and dog. We had no problems and spent two nights on the ridge.

Awsome Hike! - Complete January 21, 2018
Very cold at the top but worth it for the veiws! Easily do-able with crampons! To windy to walk along the ridge but will be back in the summer!

Wasootch Day Use Area is 17 KM south on Kananaskis Trail (Hwy 40). The trail head is fairly easy to locate but you are presented with a myriad of trails right at the onset. I found the best route is to immediately bear right towards the picnic bench and then follow the trail up from there. Note: The green trail map sign at the trailhead will tell you nothing of the trail to the ridge. It’s a fairly strenuous climb at first; edgy sections with small exposure, loose rock over slab, ~160m gain in 0.5km. Once on the ridge, it’s a series of up and down to several peaks. . I hit 5 minor peaks and only hiked just over half the trail! This day I just didn’t have the energy. The views all around are what makes this trip worthwhile. Right from the start, just turn around and take in the scenery, it’s breathtaking. I covered around 8.5km total trip, with ~765m elevation gain. The return trip would have been fairly treacherous if it was wet, lucky for me it stayed

Nihahi was my third hike and it was a tough one but boy was the view worth It! I recall it taking us 2.5 hrs give or take. mind you it was a really hot day. I definitely want to do it again only this time go more prepared as we ran out of water going up

Very cold the day I did it. In the trees it was so nice, I was peeling off layers. Beyond the treeline it was savagely windy and cold at -30. It was also snowing, so I'll have to go back on a clear day for the views. I had crampons, but never used them. Closer to the treeline, there were a few steep slippery spots. Well packed all the way.

I just did this hike on January 3rd. The trail was quite packed down. The way down was slippery.was pretty cold at the top. Make sure to dress properly for the weather. Great hike!

I've done it 4 or 5 times, one of which was on December 26/10! It's a switchback hike so not especially stimulating but it really feels great to summit this guy and overlook Canmore below. It's straight up with the top but all scree that is in slippery side but close to Calgary and safe to do on your own as there is almost always someone else on it.

Just did Ha Ling New Year's Day and trail was nicely packed making it impossible to lose the trail. No ice and not too slippery so spikes aren't completed necessary, but helped a great deal to keep up speed. Some fun sliding spots for the way down.

I just did this hike Christmas morning. The trails are nice and packed down and not too slippery at all if you have some good hiking shoes. There were only a couple slippery spots when you get out of the tree line where the snow is lightly covering the rocks but it’s honestly fine. Did it without crampons or poles and I was great. There were two spots where people slid down on their bums on the decent which made for ALOT of fun and laughs. You don’t go too fast and you slow down naturally. Great little hike :)

This hike had my favorite ridge walk to date! I regret having my ankle boots on so am excited to tackle this again in 2018 with my salomans!!

Did this in December. It is really slippery and icy, but worth it.

Hiked North Mountain, from trail head. Great hike for a quick morning in the mountains, it was December but felt like September the day we hiked.
Just a little technical and scramble. Too icy to get to South Mountain from North the day we were there (no Gear). Enjoyed the day. About 3.25 hours at a good pace.

Completed the entire ridge yesterday, was in excellent condition. If you walk the entire ridgeline to the true summit (which is much more fun than side stepping the ridge to scramble up some scree to the summit), be prepared for some exposure, narrow parts of the ridge, some downclimbs and climbing up some fun slabs. Always double check foot and hand holds as it is Kananaskis and the rock is not very stable. The true summit is marked with a stick in the rock and a small carin. For decent you can bypass the ridge and go along the south scree, but returning along the ridge is much more fun. If you choose to do the entire ridge, you should be a confident scrambler or climber.
