11/16/18 - packed snow/ice all the way up to the lakes. Carried snowshoes but didn’t use them, only used microspikes but could’ve been done without. Very few people past TH, nothing spectacular until the views above treeline. Damn kids doing there vaping stuff around Echo Lake, hopefully the fruity chemical flavors they crave will end up killing them sooner than later so when we go out to get fresh air, we can breathe it instead of breathing their second hand vape smoke!!!

Kind of steep but beautiful

Incredible trail! The snow makes the trek a little difficult but the views are beyond rewarding! Went last weekend and left feeling changed. Hop over to @2_Summit_Up on Instagram to see great pictures of what you can expect to see on this trail

Very anti-climactic view at top compared to other hikes in the area. Spend most of the hike in the shade.

Had to reduce my rating a lot. People have been on the trail shooting guns and leaving garbage. Illegal fire pits being put in right under low growth fur trees, with how dry the last several years have been, it was shocking to see this kind of activity.

Shame, it seems like we see more and more of this as the years drag on.

I love this trail. I completed it last month before the snow. The nature and views are beautiful. I loved watching the train pass in the distance. I am a Colorado native so I never really feel inclined to go back to most trails but I will definitely hike this trail again. There is an $8 fee to get into Eldorado State Park, or $5 to park outside the park and walk in, but you can tell the state park puts the money to good use. This has to be one of the cleanest trails I’ve seen. There aren’t too many tactical areas. I went counter clockwise at the loop, so going down the incline back to the trailhead was rather rocky and steep. I almost fell at one point, but it was only for a short stretch.

Great trail so close to Denver. Hiked a week ago and got into some snow near first lake. Can't wait to go back next summer or when I get some snow shoes!

There are rattlesnakes so be careful, but don't miss out! This is a great workout for people looking to improve beginner hiking skills. Lots of great views, really cool area for rock climbers, and a little history hidden on the trail.

I would have liked to pick up the pace to get a better workout in, but the trail was pretty crowded (granted, it was midday on a Saturday.) Overall it was a nice trail, great views at the top, and fun to watch climbers on the opposite rock face. My friends and I maintained regular conversation without much huffing and puffing and there were plenty of kids on the trail, so I’m not sure if deserves a “moderate” categorization, but it was a great outing for sure. Saw some cool birds, too!

This is a really great day hike if you live nearby and are off to a late start for the day. We came from neighboring Longmont and started the hike around 3. Got back to the car right after the sun went down. The creek is beautiful and it's really cool to see some local infrastructure at work. I highly recommend this hike.

Yesterday started out with crampsons thinking that was enough however as soon as I got to the hut I found that snow shoes would definitely be needed I’d like to do it again

got there at 10 a.m. yesterday only a couple of cars in the lot. though there's not a lot of spaces. well maintained trail. nice steady incline for first couple of miles. the view at the top was beautiful! bring layers! started off needing 2 jackets a hat and gloves went down to just day clothes as we got going.

Excellent trail! It seems most don't make it to the top past the old steam engine. The last 1/2 mile is steeper than the rest but the views are worth it.

Recommend 4x4 to trailhead parking due to washout road.

Most of the trail was still covered in snow due to recent snowfall in October 2018.

Honestly, really incredible views. Tough elevation climb and there’s a bit of uphill near the end on the way back which was especially challenging. We went in late October on a warm clear day and it was beautiful, challenging, and very fun. Enjoyed doing the labyrinth/maze on the side of the trail too, about half way up :)

Hiked this my first day in Denver so getting used to the elevation was a little rough for me. But overall I thought it was a great hike! The overlook was incredibly beautiful and while the trail was a bit rocky in places, it was mostly flat and wide with a slight constant incline to the top. I am not an avid hiker and a bit out of shape so I thought it was the perfect combination of a challenge, scenery, and length.

Awesome little trail with a nice overlook. some snow was melting from a dusting earlier in the week, so the trail was a bit muddy, but otherwise good.

I had a few free hours in the afternoon and live about 30 minutes away from here, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Nice trail. Well maintained. Great scenery. Gentle elevation gain.

Certainly not one of Colorado's greatest hikes, but a good couple hour loop.

It can be a little crowded, and parking can be hard to come by.

Beautiful hike with some stunning views. Very heavily trafficked especially on the road leading to the Sleepy Lion trail, but everybody kind of spreads out after that.

Hiked 10/29/18. This is probably one of the most beautiful trails I’ve done. But it is definitely hard! I would say this is probably one of the last good days to do the trail. There was 2+ ft of snow in some areas, winds were 30+ mph at the top, and after the glacier, it isn’t well traveled enough to follow a trail easily especially with snow on the ground.. - if you plan on doing this in the near future, *definitely* pack gaiters, spikes, and a GPS/AllTrails Pro. Oh and $5 cash or check to pay for parking.

Always love this trail. ..

Sweet 13er (I guess it counts as one?) Windy with plenty of snow/ice on the trail today. An easy summit overall, took under 2 hours total.

Challenging hike but with a great reward once you get past all the incline! I started around 7:30am on Saturday and didn’t see another person on the trail until my way back down. Highly recommend this one!

WOW! This was a GREAT hike! Super impressed.

PROS: Bathroom - YES... very nice! Just down at a lower parking lot than the higher lots. But still nice, clean and accessible. There are pit toilets, but they are inside a nice room and have bathroom stalls.

TERRAIN: ROCKY, as previously mentioned by others. My dog (a Dachshund) could handle the terrain, but it was sharp and big rocks in alot of places. When you get to the Crags Hotel site, it smoothes out temporarily. But, it stays "craggly" for awhile.

FEATURES: The views were amazing! Continental Divide, general views of the mountains! One of the prettier hikes that I've been to in my years of hiking for sure! The Crags Hotel was AWESOME to see the ruins... it had a fireplace, it had the fountain and some of the hotel foundation. Super cool! I love history, so it was an amazing thing to see. The railroad tracks and tunnel was also awesome to see too. The train came within minutes of us leaving the area.

BOTTOM LINE: Great bathrooms, steep hike up (def moderate or slightly higher) Wear layers! The weather changed alot up on the way up the hill... keep a lookout for snakes, although I didn't see any.
DEFINITELY get there early to get a parking space (we got there at 8:30am) and it was great!

Beautiful views

Beautiful trail nice creek to look at. Lots of different vegetation. Lots of cover from the trees so a little chilly in the cooler months.

trail running

This is a great short run. The roaring creek at the bottom added to the experience. The switchbacks are long and climb ever so higher for the first 1.75 miles. The views are stunning. I arrived at 8:30am and only met 3 hikers going up and another 3 or 4 on my way back down. There were lots of rock climbers preparing for their climb as I left the park. Knocked this one out in 53 minutes.

Seemed more dry and desolate than most of the trails I've been on. Didn't see any water anywhere which was actually nice at times because of how quiet it got. Great views at the top.

Great Hike with views of hundreds of peaks and down 3 individual valleys, about 3 steep accents which was a bit tricky in the snow/ice, but generally a fairly basic walk. Be prepared for the altitude as that can make you short breathed easily.

Difficulty: Medium

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

A fun trail, the beginning truly is a straight incline. Ankle deep snow at the worst today (October 20), a bit slick coming down. We definitely fell for the false summit so consult your map to ensure you make it to the top.
