To Do Map

I read the reviews and thought, how hard can it be? Especially with an All Trails map! Even with a track to follow this hike is challenging and we managed to get off-course. Gloves are definitely helpful because of the rock climbing and possibly slips on loose rock. The view at the top is awesome and of course the bench and mailbox are super cute! But there is a lot of loose rock which I didn't enjoy sliding on during our descent. This was not only a physical challenge but a mental one as well. There was a lot of thinking/navigating involved. It is well marked with cairns, which proved to be very useful. My legs are scratched from rock and cactus but it was worth it. Beautiful views and a challenging climb!

First time doing this trail. We came in from Mobile and it was a fairly easy drive. The trail is in great condition but definitely an uphill grind. On a warm day, start early and take lots of water! Absolutely beautiful at the top with a great view of South Mountain. Would definitely do this one again!

Make sure you take gloves. Coming back down left my hands raw. Difficult hike but definitely worth it.

Great hike, challenging but doable. Hard first part but levels near the top. Saw some wildlife along the trail (deer / rabbit / etc). Most of the trail was easy walking, wide with minimum rocks. Loose gravel coming down could be a problem unless you have good hiking boots.

My wife and I heard about this hike and decided to try it. We were pleasantly surprised by the trail which was varied and interesting. There were lots of people hiking when we were there, but it didn't feel overcrowded. The "cave" is more like an indentation opposed to a traditional cave. All in all it was is a good time and we will do it again. I would say it is a moderate hike.

the hike up is definitely worth the view at the top!

Fantastic. I am in decently good shape and it was moderate to hard. It’s all uphill and a lot of rock scrambling. But views along the way and at the end are stunning. Took us 25 mins from the cathedral Rock trailhead to get to the top. Then it’ll be another 25 to get down. Everyone said to get here early because the trail is crowded and the two parking lots get full. So we got here at 8am in high season on a Thursday. The first lot was full but second lot was mostly empty. This was the perfect time to go because the trail wasn’t crowded at all and we had space to get up and enjoy the view and the weather was perfect (58 degrees). Definitely worth it!

I did the Piestewa peak summit trail. I was actually very disappointed in this trail. The entire trail up the mountain is just stairs and stairs. The scenery was just more stairs. The trail was very man made and even had railings at certain spots. This also should be rated easy to moderate. If stairs give your knees problems then it’s moderate, otherwise it’s easy. I should have just went to the gym and did the stair master for an hour. It says no dog allowed, but everyone brings their dogs.

It wasn't what i was expecting. but great trail. beautiful at the end. just be prepared for a lot of people even during middle of week.

This is my overall favorite Sedona hike, combining stunning views with pure physical endurance, technical hiking, a bit of climbing, a lot of variety in scenery and a fair amount of risk. Bear Mt has a little of everything. It is a long, hard hike with sensational views throughout and an enormous payoff if you reach the true final summit.. It requires physical fitness, experience, and some preparation. Take lots of water, some food, gloves and hat. It is too dangerous for young children, with many trail segments near sheer cliffs or along precarious rock ledges. Recommend starting early in the morning and be prepared for 4-6 rigorous hours of Sedona heaven.

Beautiful views. Hike is a tough one, but doable. Need a LOT of water. I carried 3L and ran out.

GREAT hike with BEAUTIFUL views! The weather was perfect!

Love the trail and the view at the top.

great little hike with a cool view. at the top go to the left and up another rock scramble to find a more secluded area. get there early because it is going to be busy.

One of the best hikes I’ve ever done. I went weekday early morning and it was still pretty busy.... around 12 it got intensely crowded.
The hike is so so worth the falls though, and I’d do it again any day. You just have to take care when crossing the river... as the trail isn’t marked too well in these areas! Got lost a couple of times but again, so totally worth it.

We usually do North Park but decided to do this one to have a challenge. We went Monday to cut down on the weekend crowd but at about in 9:30/10 am it was already really busy. The hike itself was nothing too hard. There are a ton of places to rest and most of the incline is fairly gradual... no real sharp vertical areas except at the very top. In all honesty I do not feel this trail is nearly as difficult as most of the reviews on here say, and the traffic through the area is bad enough i want to say the view isn't really worth it. I went all the way to the summit as a personal goal and im glad I did it once but.... I wont be taking this trial again for quite a while.

Parking lot busy. Worth it.

We got there around 9 and waited about 10 min. for a parking spot. But we planned on that and used the time to apply sunscreen. I would suggest this hike for those who consider themselves athletic. There were many people we watched go part way and then have to turn around feeling defeated. In my personally opinion the view from the top was not tons better than part way up but for me it was more about the accomplishment of making it to the top. At the top it is not flat like Camelback. It is much like the rocks you are climbing up to get there so it is hard to find a comfortable place to sit or lay. Climbing this trail is like going up stairs the whole time. I would suggest a stairmaster to train for this if desired. It is a great pretty quick workout. Be sure to wear well fitting shoes. I thought mine were till I was on the way down and my toes were pressing into the end of my shoes. Be sure to bring water.

Enjoyable hike, but crowed. Spectacular views. Rated as moderate but has sections with significant rock climbs. Used the Baldwin/Templeton routes to access the trail, added 2 miles to the hike. Avoided the crowded trail head problem.

I enjoyed this trail very much but it is not moderate, in my opinion. This is borderline "hard". Rocky and steep. Definitely not a good idea to take small children. It was right at 4 miles total out and back. Took appropriately 2 hours. Visited on a Sunday mid-morning. Quite busy but everyone was very courteous.

Great view at the top—lots of traffic. Well worth it.

Definitely more scramble than hike, strongly suggest not going solo for your first time unless have strong route finding skills. At the end of the day it is a short tough scramble to the top that is both challenging and rewarding. Please do not even consider using spray paint to mark a trail.

Views are worth the initial climb. Not too difficult, just need to be prepared for a lot of very steep incline switchbacks for the first 1.5miles. Be careful coming down, as it can be slippery. One of my favorite in the area. Huge boulders at top make for unique views.

This trail was more mentally challenging than it was physically though you’d better be in good shape if you want to take this one on. The trail is the worst marked and hard to follow that I’ve ever been on. I marked the trail I used on the way up with markers which saved me a ton of time on the way down and saved my neck when I went off trail on the descent. I ran into another lone hiker on the way up who claimed to have almost died because he took a wrong path and ended up stranded on a cliff. This would be a better hike if some effort was put into marking the trail correctly. Do not try this hike if are not good at reading trails and terrain. It is correctly rated as hard for good reason.

Well maintained parking lot, restrooms, and trail. Trail is mostly uphill with a few flat spots, so be prepared to climb. Views are nice and there are other trails to venture if time permits. Hawks are currently nesting so they've asked hikers to stay quiet at the top.

Awesome hike!! Rocks are slippery. Be careful!! Don’t try to do any stunts by seven falls. Take tram if you have less time to hike. Checked my Bucket list

My 58 year old body made it to the top! With my 57 year old hubby as my tour guide, we were successful in following the trail. Very well marked. Lots of great photo ops and the view from the top is breathtaking.

Took three of us four hours out and back. Two hours to reach the summit, and another two to get back down. We would have made it down a bit faster had we not gotten off trail. Markers can be hard to find at times, especially on the way down so just be aware and best to go with a partner if it’s your first time. A lot of scrambling and a few large rock formations you will have to climb carefully. Amazing view, challenging at times, climbing is fun, well worth it!

We did this hike over the weekend. In my opinion it's not that hard..... just really long. We clocked 13 miles total roundtrip. But most of it is flat, so it's not crazy taxing. The only real elevation gain is the very end when you climb the battleship. There are a few places where you have to do some rockclimbing. Nothing to where you need ropes, but if you aren't comfortable with 3-4 move bouldering, this hike will be scary for you. The top of battleship is worth the scramble! Gorgeous views of the superstition wilderness! I brought a gallon of water and finished it by the time we reached the car.

Great hike went this morning. Had beautiful weather and great views. Was mild traffic not too bad just make sure to start by 9 on the way down was getting a little crowded. Also bring the right shoes very rocky terrain. Overall I enjoyed this hike and would do it again.
