I've done this hike many time! It is a great hike for everyone! Very easy and family friendly to the first waterfall. The upper falls take a bit more effort but are equally as wonderful. Lovely views, flora, and fauna to be seen!

Great for a quick little trip out of the city. Easy for kids

it was incredible! so much snow and the views at the top were amazing!!

My first ever hike. Amazing view from the top

Easy beginner hike. Gorgeous views.

Had a great time exploring this hike! Fun to walk the frozen stream if you’ve got spikes on. Can’t wait to see it in the summer.

Easy hike for a family! It was a touch icy in spots throughout . Kids had fun sliding on the icy hill parts while we skirted in the brush to stay upright. But lots of dry/bare spots too!

Great little hike. Easy to do with kids. Beautiful waterfall. Keep your eyes out for the troll! :)

Quiet and pretty trail, nobody else here when I visited. Good for a quick stroll.

My favorite hike! Push yourself to get to the top! I was nervous about doing the switchback at the end because it looked steep with loose stones but I went up anyway and the views were incredible, so happy I did.

Johnson Lake is located about 15 minutes north of Banff along a scenic drive. The drive to this lake was beautiful as the narrow paved road wound through meadows and forests and offered gorgeous views of the mountain scenery. I even had the opportunity to see a large group of bighorn sheep along the road close to Lake Minnewanka which was really awesome!

Johnson Lake seemed to be a popular spot for the locals to go for a swim, picnic, relax on the beach, kayak or paddle board. It was quite busy during my visit and the small gravel parking lot was full but I managed to find a spot along the road.

There is a 3 km easy and peaceful looped trail that follows along the perimeter of the lake that I enjoyed hiking. It was a flat trail that wound through a beautiful forest with some openings in the trees along the way to provide great views of Johnson Lake and the surrounding mountains.

While you're in the area, make a stop at Lake Minnewanka as well. It was very pretty! They offered boat cruises at the lake and there were some picnic areas but other than that, there wasn’t too much to do there. It’s still a great place to stop and get some photos though!

I wouldn’t say that Lake Minnewanka and Johnson Lake are must-sees in Banff (compared to places like Moraine Lake and Lake Louise), but if you have some extra time, it’s definitely a worthwhile and rewarding excursion. These lakes are not as popular and touristy as other places in Banff, so it’s also a good place to get away from the crazy crowds elsewhere and enjoy some serenity. There is also a good chance that you will see wildlife in this area.

VIsited in July 2017.

Beautiful day. Lots of fresh snow and was snowing a bunch on the return trip! Avy group said conditions above treeline were not stable.

This trail becomes a cross country skiing track in the winter. We tried this hike with the kids in Jan 2019 but all tracks around it was for skiing, no hiking was allowed. Before we left, I stopped in the visitor center and asked for guidance, how to make it to the lake. We will try to find it next weekend. I gave 4 starts because the trail looked really nice and I didn’t want to downgrade the trail just because it’s not available for hiking in the winter.

An absolute gem. You will never say that this trail is dull. Went during winter and the view is just breathtaking. Great for snow shoeing and cross country skiing ! We brought a

We have only done it in the winter but falls are cool frozen. It is easy to connect to Hay Meadow (cross cutline as per map and turn right at little pump shack and follow river) it will lead back to the same patking lot. creating an oval. I like meadow last as flat and easy. both parts are pretty.

Really easy trail and very quick. Lots of traffic though so get there early. Do the hike to Upper Falls! You’ll see signs for it along the trail. It’s about a 20 min hike uphill but when we got there there wasn’t a single person.. where as when we arrived at Troll Falls there was about 30 people. No need for crampons or poles at the time we hiked. (Late December)

I think I’d only recommend this trail if you’re new to the area and need something to get you acclimated to the inclines and altitude. It’s not difficult by any means, but does include a bit of elevation gain. On either side you’ll have good views of Ha Ling and EEOR (which are much better hikes), and you’ll get a satisfying view of the waterfall the lakes are feeding as you climb. The true beauty of this hike is the crystal clear lakes.

Pushing past the lakes will lead you to petroglyphs and the reservoir above, which is pretty in its own right, giving you a good view of the mountains beyond. Occasionally I have seen mountain goats/sheep? near the top of the trail, and extremely friendly chipmunks. There are a few popular rock climbing sections as well that are accessed via this hike. Altogether, some nice views, although not the best by any means.

Easy trail with some beautiful views. Wildlife was everywhere! We saw deer, elk and a pack of wolves eating a freshly caught deer which was truly amazing(we kept a safe distance).

Not as much snow as we would have liked for snowshoeing and had to take them off near the end but it was still a beautiful and easy trail.

A great short hike. I definitely encourage hiking crampons rather than city/daily ice spikes.

Beautiful easy trail!

Don’t expect those breathtaking summit views, but for its category, it is definitely a 5 star little hike. We did this trip as a family with little kids and grandma. Everyone enjoyed it a lot, really nice scenery with all those little waterfalls. Located so close to Cochrane, it’s a perfect quick getaway from our busy life especially for those who live in town. We will be back for sure to see the different seasons there.
