Does anyone know if this has opened back up?

we did this hike on New Years Eve and again this past Sunday. One of our favorites for sure. NYE there was allot of snow, obviously fresh and super cold. This past weekend, much of the snow was gone and the lake wasnt as frozen. Two very different hikes and very different views along the way with and without the snow. Cant wait to come back in the summer to camp! Easy in and out very little elevation. Just enough to get your heart rate up a bit and then your there. LOTS of dogs off their leashes would be my only negative comment. We brought 3 dogs both times and kept them leashed for caution both times.

Easy trails to the bottom of both spectacular falls! The trail to the top of Golden Falls is an easy incline and the views from the top are definitely worth the hike. Overall, stunning scenery.

Enjoyed the scenery and walking in the snow. When the app says the trail has heavy traffic that’s an understatement. It was like Walmart on Black Friday with one lane in and out of the sno-park because of so many cars parked on the side of the road. People and dogs everywhere; like the house chaos of Home Alone except outside.

The snow is too compact to actually snowshoe for realz. Just did it for funz!

Took a group of Boy Scouts to overnight at the lake . Built an igloo in the campground area. Very busy parking lot and trail during the day, only ones on the lake that night!

Great little hike. Easy to get to, plenty of parking and the trail is packed so it’s easy to navigate. Fresh snow fell so all the trees are coated and the lake is gorgeous. Definitely worth the drive from Tacoma.

Love this hike!!! It was way more then 1.9 it more like 5 1/2 miles almost 6 , still total worth it , you can take a way quicker way to the lake but the loop around is gorgeous. We snowshoed in for fun rentals only 15$ not bad at all .kids could total make it only one big hill at the end .

Kids enjoyed the hike and played in the snow.

We snowshoed this trail on a Saturday morning. There were a few people there when we left the car, and by the time we returned to the parking lot (before 11:00), it was packed. The total length for the trip was 5 miles, with the additional miles from the sno-park.
The lake was covered in snow and pretty. The view of Mt. Hood was spectacular.
The path trail was very hard packed snow and ice. You don't really need snowshoes for this trail. A lot of people were out there without. The trail was pretty crowded.
I prefer a little more solitude hiking and snowshoeing. This would be a good beginner trail. You don't have to worry about getting lost and the scenery is pretty.

Came prepared for the snow, wasn't expecting all the rain. Despite only having water-resistant clothing (and being soaked-to-the-bone when done), this trail was perfect for a quick, easy, and beautiful snowshoeing fix! From the road, it was about a half mile walk to reach the pond. Quite a few people out making the trek to the pond, but had the trail around Gold Creek Pond completely to ourselves. Gorgeous views and plenty peaceful. Only issue to report has been addressed by other reviewers. There were a lot of folks with dogs out there and a lot of waste left behind scattering the trail up to the pond.

Great easy hike! A little tough when you want to go down to water , which is cold.. pretty busy on a Sunday, got to parking at about 1100. Water color is amazing!!! Would love to come back when their is snow everywhere . Highly recommend.

Beautiful hike, mostly dirt but where the canopy lightened there was a little snow on the ground. By the end of the hike the snow was mostly melted. The pool was beautiful with the snow falling, but don't expect a big waterfall this time of year.

Fun, easy hike around the frozen lake.

Great hike for the start of 2019. Get there early as there is parking but it will fill up. Hike is easy and well worth it. Be prepared for lots of people. It’s a popular spot!

Nice, easy loop to break in some new snowshoes. Fairly crowded and the messy parking situation notwithstanding, it's an ok way to enjoy some the snow and mountains.

Hiked in on 12/26 to do a couple of days of snow camping. The area is stunning and quite snowy (note: be aware that the road leading
up to the trailhead is getting challenging for non 4x4s). The bridge over the creek is fine (having poles is a plus for this hike) and the lake frozen over. Baring Mountain looming high above the lake is a sight to see, complete with a crown of clouds.

I had to cut my camping short as my bivvy sack, pad, sleeping bag, wool blanket, and wool base and middle layers weren’t enough for the clear sky cold of the night. I went to bed at 7:30 or so and woke up at 9:20 realizing I was feeling areas of cold even through all of my layers. I elected to bail and hiked back through the forest in light snow following the partially filled tracks of previous hikers. I did get to see very fresh elk tracks - probably missed saying hello by a few minutes.

Walking back at night was a very intense and vibrant experience. I will say I did crazy ivans every few minutes to look for any night eyes. A little disappointed at not being able to stay the night but the overall experience was magical.

We went on 12/27, once you turn onto the service road theres a few pot holes, we hit quite a bit of snow on the way up the road around 10 a.m. and some cars got stuck, one had to get towed out. The hike was gorgeous, there's some slushy snow on lake, we brought micro spikes but didn't need them. Very minimal elevation gain, but as it gets more icy would be good to have spikes and poles. Plan for extra time as it takes longer in the snow, esp. if you have to park a ways down due to road conditions. There is a bathroom at the trailhead and lots of shy camprobbers :)

Beautiful! Easy, but fun. It was good for working on endurance. The trail is doable in the snow, but I wished I’d had poles and/or spikes for my boots because I was slipping and sliding a bit when the snow started to melt.

One of the beat hikes I had for the distance. Very beautiful and serene. Not very busy.

Nice easy loop trail with amazing views of Mt Rainier! We went in the beginning of October so the fall foliage was spectacular. We saw some deer that were really chill (they sat by the trail and watched us as we started the trail and they were there still at the end of the loop). It was cold and windy however so bundle up! Even the drive to the trail alone made it worth it. We stopped at a cute little restaurant and the base of the mountain that had amazing food.

Baring Mountain looked really ominous on my December hike. The lake was half frozen over and would make big cracking noises as the sheet of ice shifted. Really cool!

Easy snowshoeing trail with great reward.

Lots of snow; knee deep and yellow in some places now. Missed a few turns on the way up due to having no clue where the path was and my boyfriend thinking he’s Lewis and Clark status. Made it to the top of Kelly Butte hill, but not the lookout.

Will return in the spring.

Was looking for any easy hike to enjoy the PNW and the snow. Wasn’t too crowded when we started but more people arrived mid day. Some spots were icy so we stayed to the side of the trail. As a dog owner of two, I find it sad to see other dog owners not picking up after their dogs.

So cool!

Awesome hike. Falls are spectacular. Especially views of falls from different locations on the path. Don't pass the short side trips off trail to see falls

can only get to about 1.5 miles from the trailhead with four-wheel drive there is quite a bit of icy packed snow. went on a really beautiful day and was not disappointed by the views just a little bummed that I didn't get to complete the hike
