Amazing hike ! Lots of snow , bring micro spikes and poles .

Amazing hike! We took the shorter trail which is quite steep but a great workout and takes less time. Very much worth it!

Such an amazing hike! If youre unsure of where to go there is a friendly staff at the nature center that offers you maps of all the trails available with their level of difficulty. The trails are clean and it is such a great way to spend a day out.

Beautiful hike, but do it early to beat the heat and the crowds!

Just a little strenuous and good views. Usually not too crowded.

It was a good hike except for the fact that I saw THREE coyotes throughout the four miles. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure whether they were all coyotes. Two of them could’ve been grey foxes. Either way, each encounter left me feeling uneasy. The first one I encountered was small and it quickly ran away when it saw my dog and I. The second one (about a mile later) stood its ground and did not move even after I made loud noises to try to scare it off. Then as we were finishing up Miners Trail , I heard what sounded like a barking dog. As I looked around to see if there was a lost dog around I realized it was yet another coyote! I will come with larger group next time and better educate myself on what to do if I spot other wild animals on the trails.

This hike is definitely worth it. It’s also worth paying the $10 to park. They have excellent, well maintained facilities at the lake, and the trail is also very well maintained. If you are a trail runner this is ideal because the path is relatively smooth and even for the first stretch, then when it gets steep there are rock stairs or rock gardens. There was not one place that was sketchy to navigate.

I’d call this a moderate hike because while somewhat long and a bit a steep at places, you never question your life or abilities. Hard hikes, I think, should have you second-guessing your ability to complete them. This hike never required any thought. It was smooth.

Also, I thought I’d be showing up “late” when I started about 7:45am on Sunday, 12/9. It wasn’t crowded at all and I had long stretches to myself. There were a few groups going up but not too many. And while I didn’t take a picture, there was no line do so. Definitely more people on the way down (coming up), but there were a few large groups. Bottom line, don’t stress if you are not there at sunrise, you can still get some alone time in. And there’s a lot of shade in the morning. It took me about 1:20 to get up and 50 minutes to come down, and I ran part of the way down.

If you need a hike to really kick your ass, try El Cajon Mountain. Even if you don’t go the full 11 miles, it is challenging and up hill both ways!

Definitely a good hike that wears you out on the way up....as long as you hike the side starting at the lake. Will definitely hike again soon.

Amazing in the winter with rain and fog. I expected it to be a bit tougher but maybe with the heat of spring or summer it earns that hard rating. I’d highly recommend doing it on an overcast day like today though.

monster workout. great views. facilities at the bottom. The description and all trails is incorrect it is closer to 8 Miles not 6.9

Good hike and great scenic views. I could feel the oxygen start to thinner out on my way up. I shouldnt have hiked alone but no one would dare go with me especially at a high level. Be careful when climbing up the rocks as they start to be slippery with ice building up. Overall it was worth it.

Did it on 11/17 and had perfect weather!! Chilly up top, slight breeze but I still had a T-shirt on.

Excellent workout, we did the shorter trail; it was hard but definitely worth it!
Highly recommended.

Can't get enough of this area, so beautiful. If you do the whole loop, the other side of Long lake the trail is big rocks. My pup and i didn't mind for that's the part hiking is it's elements. ( did this lake before and always plenty of dogs on trails)But if you want to go clockwise and take Bear lake trail it would put you just coming up the otherside to Mt Elwell. Steep in areas but manageable and well worth the views. The top of Mt. Elwell is some rock climbing, again my pup and I did it and it just depends on your ability, but view from the top was amazing. Also get a sneak peak of Jamison Lake on the backside . Hike definitely didn't disappoint.

Great trail. Walked with my 10 years old daughter and her friend. Good walk out.

Did this trip in August. Absolutely loved it! Beautiful scenery! First backpacking experience. Camped midway which was fun and hiked to peak next day. The altitude was a new challenge, but not too hard. A wonderful getaway!

Good Long trail steady climb. And obviously the awesome photo opp at the end

Did it on 11/17/18 very nice weather just a bit chilly at times .

Love everything about this hike.

Spectacular views. Can be hard for folks who take time in adjusting to altitude low pressure at 10k ft

Beautiful hike. Difficult but worth it! Start early park closes gates strictly 5pm

Perfect to test our skills

Absolutely beautiful hike! I will definitely be back in early spring to see the creek in action as well as the waterfalls and wildflowers.

This trail has it all - wonderful views, awesome gnarly trees, manzanitas, rocky creek bed, and beautiful Mount Diablo. I would classify this as an arduous ascent up the mountain for the first half although, to be fair I haven't hiked in a while so maybe it felt more intense for me then for those who hike regularly.

Great hiking particularly in early spring and fall.

Great trail for AR training..

I really enjoyed this trail! Super scenic area and the trail was easy to follow. I extended the loop a bit further by hiking off the backside of Elwell. Only saw one other person the entire journey. Really made for a great afternoon of adventure.

Beautiful Trail! First half is downhill, second half mostly up. I ended up coming back on the West Ridge Trail instead of the French trail and this worked out fine, just a bit of extra elevation. Plenty of spots to cut through back to the French section if desired. Not too many people on a weekday and nice and shaded.

Very nice!

Really well-maintained trail, nice variety in pathways, and beautiful views. Go AS EARLY as you can get there to enjoy some sense of solitude and beautiful light along the way.

For runners, a great place to practice decision-making for when to walk up steeps and when to run- and as a bonus, BOMBING downhill fun all the way.
