A great hike to a wonderful lake on Monday, 8/13. I originally planned to get to bluebird lake but called it at the junction and decided to partake in just Ozuel - it didn't disappoint! Note that there's not a lot of shore space to sit down.

I'd read on here that it tends to get hot in the treeline areas which is kinda true. It's not very shaded about a mile past the falls but it's less than 10,000' feet (read: not above treeline). The lack of shade is due to a fire in the late 1970s (Google Ozuel Lake Fire for interesting information on RMNP allowing the fire to burn naturally) and therefore a lack of mature shade trees.

All in all, a really neat hike with great views of Longs and Meeker. Lots of people to the falls and thins out a bit afterwards.

A few notes:
-From GAIA GPS: 10.00 miles, 5:27 hours (58 minutes stoppage time), 1545' ascent
-I arrived to trailhead at 9:30am and there were about 10 parking spots left
-Saw two big ol' cow moose alongside road between entrance station and trailhead
-As others have said, be sure to take small trail to left of large falls to see 40' falls head on

Great hike. A little crowded on weekends but worth it.

Great scenic trail. Seems crowded on weekends.

Challenging in some areas for novice hikers but overall a great place to hike!

Great hike!

Did this yesterday. They did a great job fixing this trail up, there's still signs along the trail of erosion from the flood, but the trail itself is in good condition. A fun mixture of up and down the entire way, and the homesteads/artifacts were awesome to explore! It's a good reminder to never take anything from these sights, but it was cool being able to look at the artifacts up close. Lots of sharp rusty metal and glass around the ruins, so watch your step, especially if you have kids. Also a LOT of poison ivy, so stay on trail and cover your legs!

Just did it! The climb is pretty steep the entire way up. Trails are loose rock and dirt and will definitely get your heart thumping! Just take your time and enjoy the views. The top of the trail winds you along the edge to amazing views overlooking all of Dillon Reservoir. Truly worth the hike. On the way down, the trail will definitely take a toll on your knees. We (2-48 yr olds and 3 teens) slowly jogged down which seemed easier than walking. Nice short hike, done in under 2 hrs, but stay longer and enjoy the vista!

Super steep, lots of loose rocks. This map stops short of the best views...you keep going downhill after you scope out the highway views and then scramble up a rock to get to the very top. Excellent views from there. Mix of shade and sun.

historic ruins, nice hike, good views. give it a go.

The homestead meadows and trails up there were a great surprise. Wasn't expecting too much from a trail that starts on the side of busy highway 36. I'll be back to explore more of the system.

While Thunder Lake itself is a serene beautiful spot, getting there isn't that much fun. Tons of loose rocks underfoot and not a flower in sight makes this a boring trail. Didn't really enjoy much after Ouzel Falls to be frank.

Tricky to find and stay on the trail. Make sure to be tracking/mapping

Trail repairs were well done. This is a great hike. Only one section, more than halfway, which is rocky and steep for one-half mike. Meadow is beautiful.

Great workout with my pup. Uphill out & downhill back

Excellent trail, beautiful views. Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is the view overlooks the highway at the summit.

fun hike, great way to start the day!

Quick, easy hike... good fun. Great views.

Great family hike! Plenty of shade and not too challenging but a great work out!

I would only rate this as "hard" due to the middle third of the trail, where it gets pretty damn steep. Definitely had me feeling my age! The views at the top were excellent, and the 30-40 MPH winds were a refreshing change of pace as we were sweating big time!

I would suggest you park at the end of 2nd Ave versus by the freeway. There is a shortcut leading up to the trail from that lot, so there is no need to walk along the bike path.

A great place for a quick trail run. Challenging, but you wont die.

I weigh 275lbs. I'm hovering around 40% body fat. I have had a stressful year and haven't worked out seriously for at least that long. I started walking/jogging again three weeks ago. I saw "Hard" - and even the reviews talking about how killer this path is - but I also saw it's less than two miles one way and maybe 1.5 after you get off the pavement. I said to myself:. "I used to ruck ten times that with an 80 pound pack in my Army days!"

I made it to the summit. I drug my fat body three steps at a time in some areas. I bet it was worth it, and I would have loved it had I not been sucking what tiny amount of oxygen was left at 10,000 feet. Apparently the ten year old kids whizzing by me didn't need it.

If you are a beginner or out of shape, you better have lots of time or lots of determination.

Great hike. 4/5. Would suffer again.

Great, easy (but long) hike. We got to the parking lot at 6:15, which was a good call. By the time we were on our way down, there was a line of people on their way to Ouzel Falls and the lot was completely full. Not too steep and the views of the falls were gorgeous. Really enjoyed this one.

Great trail that gets your heart rate going and wonderful views. Went up the castle trail up to walkers dream trail and took turkey trot on the way down. Saw a deer on the way. Effort to views was ideal

Great morning hike. Good 8 mike hike! Great views, wild flowers and decent climb. Decently traveled today with a lot of mtn bikers and hikers.

Great trail with access on the west and east ends. West end is a more gradual slope–perfect for kids. The east end has great views towards Morrison, Downtown Denver, and Red Rocks.
We hiked from the west end of the Castle trail out to the old ranch house and cornerstone of the attempted Summer Whitehouse. On the way back we added the Meadow and Tower trails to the south to form a loop.
If starting in the morning from the west, I would recommend the reverse: Meadow, Tower, then Castle. (Castle Trail is shaded whereas Meadow is not)
Good map in this app, but maps available to print by searching “Jeff Co Open Space Mount Falcon Park.”

This hike was definitely challenging but worth it for the views!! Warning for amateur hikers: it is up hill the entire time, but pace yourself, take breaks, and anyone can make it!

Pretty good hike, it's fun to explore the whole area. Meandered through and went on other trails here and spend about 5 hours here. Moderate hiker.
Devil's Elbor was a nice addition.

Challenging, quick, fun!
1hr round trip if you're quick. 2hrs if you take your time, plus there is lots to see at the top. Get ready for that booty to burn!

After reading reviews my daughter and I decided to tackle this hike. We started up Turkey Trot which then connected to Castle trail to go to Walkers Dream and then down and to the right for the ruins. Whoever put this as moderate is plum crazy. The hiked kicked our butts!! Highly suggest taking Turkey Trot to connect to Castle trail, it is definitely more covered than doing the Castle Trail to start..what also no one seems to mention is the extensive up hill switch backs, it was a struggle. Not recommending for beginners.
