This trail is no joke! I look forward to getting back to it in the summer when the snow is gone. It’s incredibly beautiful, and as others have said, incredibly challenging. I would say with the snow, this is more difficult than “moderate”. It’s easy to follow the trails from those who’ve already been up.

Make a reservation for the hut in the winter. Great place to snowshoe or backcountry ski too. We skinned up Castle Peak and dropped into Round Valley before reaching Peter Grubb. Safety First.

Amazing spot, fantastic view! Very slippery rocks toward the top and often times it can be a bit gusty. Other than that it’s such a cool adventure hike!

Snow was a little crusty as we headed up the final elevation but the view from atop Andesite Peak was breathtaking. Every direction you look is remarkable, especially the view up the ridge to Castle Peak. Pretty windy on top but a perfect day with only scattered clouds. We continued back to Peter Grubb Hut before returning to add some mileage. Easy loop as snowshoes were unnecessary for the trail in the valley as it hasn’t snowed for a couple weeks and the trail is compacted.

Completed on 1/2/19. Was able to make it all the way up on snowshoes. Only one on the trail all day, great solidarity and pretty views. Snow was pretty deep and there was one sketchy river crossing, but other than that it was overall very easy.

Snow packed by multi sport winter use so was very runnable and enjoyable without snowshoes. Peter Grubb Hut a fantastic mid-run reward. Highly recommended as a winter trailrun.

really beautiful in the winter, we started it too late in the day to make the meadow but will be back

Not a loop trail. Out and back. The trail gets steep with a lot of loose rock making the climb a bit technical. Otherwise, it was a great workout and provided a fantastic view!

Completed on 12/23/18. The hike was very challenging, especially on snowshoes. Like other reviewes stated, it's more like 8 miles round trip. Stunning views and great solidarity at this time of year. Somewhat dangerous as well however, as it was extremely steep at parts and icy, especially at the peak. Highly suggested for advanced hikers!

Great little trek through the woods. Easy to follow the snow trail and the hut makes for a great place to stop and chill for a bit.

Awesome trail - easy to follow the path in the snow from those who have already been there or download the map and use GPS on your phone - it's a popular enough trail you won't get lost. This is a fun trail to take over to Castle Peak and/or down to the Grubb Hut. Several fun options and excellent views. During the winter, pay to park over by the Inn.

great views from the top i only came back once but been thete serval times taking different longer rounts

this Trail is pretty much all uphill with a few breaks and not any switchbacks and is out and back ...completed this hike not very many stops in about 3. my recommendation is to bring good traction shoes with trekking poles especially going back down if you reach the top of Castle Peak. A lot of loose Rock. I would definitely go again but with someone who was more adventurous and would be willing to stop to take some pictures. stunning views but be ready for sudden changes in weather especially going in October/ November

The parking lot is pretty slippery. I attempted the hike, but had to abort after 1.2 miles in because the snow was falling pretty good and I didn't want my truck to be stuck the next morning. That said, it is a pretty hike in the snow. If you are thinking of accomplishing this hike this time of year, I suggest chains and 4 wheel drive (of which, I have neither (yet)).

Great Trail. Fantastic views and fairly well marked, which was surprising given we couldn't seem to find the exact trail when we went up to Castle Rock. We followed the "beaten" path thru the snow, which wasn't what ALLTrails showed. Still loved it. Look forward to doing it again in Spring Thaw weather.

got this one knocked out right as it started to snow on November 21. I wish I had known that you are able to drive in the first 1.5 or so miles past the gate. Also checked out Andesite Peak on the way back.

Seemed that the trail is a lot longer than noted on the map so be prepared with extra water and snacks. We hiked during a smokey day from nearby fire so could be it was a bit more difficult to breathe that day. Lake is surrounded by volcanic geology so not the typical sierra granite style lake. Eagles nest in the cliffs so you might get to see them fly over the lake if you are lucky!

Awesome hike with 3 kids - 9, 6, and 3. The 2.7 miles was just a loud perfect. They only broke down around 2.5 miles.

Great easy short hike. Great views at the end from Lovers Leap looking down at the town of Strawberry, north towards horse tail falls, and all the peaks and forests in the surrounding area. We parked across highway 50 from Camp Sacramento. Good hike for kids, our 4yr old made it up and back on his own without any issues.

Phenomenally beautiful views from the peak, but significantly longer and more difficult than listed!

I’m always looking for trails to take our horses on and this is not one of them. Mostly an easy hike with the exception of 2-3 granite areas that would be nearly impossible on horses. Too many hikers for my likes as well.

There is nothing moderate about this hike! It’s definitely an easy one! Perfect for trail running and great for dogs with water along the way and plenty of shade. Reward of beautiful lake at the end! Highly recommend.

Very nice well marked trail. Pretty much all uphill on-way but nothing too hard. Very pleasant scenery. Would be awesome around october because of all the aspen trees. Although I hiked it, it would be a nice beginner MTB trail. Some rocks at the beginning you could walk but a good trail without death cliffs. :)

This is a moderate trail only if you are agile and fit. I have a fit dog, Shepherd, and it was a scramble for him with a couple of spots where I had to lift him to get him over some rock and log obstacles. It is NOT suitable for horses by any stretch of the imagination. There are some semi-steep portions of this trail that are more rock than trail, littered with volleyball sized rocks along sloped granite faces in some places and precarious dead fall bridges in others. If you don't do rocks or high steps, this is not the trail for you. Horses would not be able to negotiate these obstacles safely, regardless of whether you dismount or not. If you have little ones it will be a scramble for them too. We went in mid-November so the bogs, marshes and intermittent streams were dry or frozen allowing us to avoid the bugs. If you are looking to back country camp be aware that there are a lot of dead standing trees that are potential widow makers. Also be aware that regardless of fire conditions, the amount of deadfall and standing dead trees in the area make this bowl a tinder box.

Worth the view! but definitely tough. This was 8.2 miles total and pretty steep for most of it. Going back down is easy but I would say this is more hard then Moderate.

Great hike with a solid amount of elevation gain. The hike is 8 miles round trip with 2800 feet of elevation gain. You start winding your way through beautiful forest and emerge to views of Sierra at Tahoe (a local ski resort). After crawling up a steep section the trees begin to thin and eventually you emerge to unbelievable views. You can see more lakes and mountains than you will know what to do with. Have fun and be safe. This is a nice trail all the way to the top, not too rocky and lots of good footing.

Great trail, however this is 4.1 miles each way (value from iWatch plus two trail guides) not the 6.5 stated here!

Beautiful hike this time of the year. The weather was great and helped with the steady climb to the top. Enjoyed it a lot ! Short and moderate hike.

Beautiful views

Great mellow trail. Beautiful in late October when the aspens are changing.
