Should have listen to the guy who commented (only for the sure footed) the entire hike is tippy creek rocks and scree! Slippery in the shadows. But the view was incredible. Took ~2.5 hours to make it the the pass. No obvious trail but there are ribbon markers. Wouldn’t recommend as a winter hike. Saw remains of an avalanche already. Wouldn’t be a safe place to be if an avalanche went down the creek! Hike starts at the end of a flooded out creek, hard to find!

Nice little trail on the north western coast of the SF peninsula. Stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, a true oasis in the City that will give you a respite from all the hustle and bustle.

Only made it to around the 2.2km mark (top of the brownish coloured hill before heading up to the shute to see the other side). It was too windy to complete on Saturday. My friends made it up to the start of the ridge. Some people were crossing the ridge towards the peak. Bring microspikes and poles and gaiters and you'll be fine. Watch out for snow in the bowl up top crossing to the ridge. This warm weather might make things interesting (av path?). Too windy for pictures. Tracked trail, foot prints to walk in. Warm weather makes snow too slushy though. I will try this again on a non-windy day. Otherwise, great trail.

Amazing hike! Could present a challenge for novice hikers. Bring plenty of water and a snack to eat at the lake. You can camp on designated areas and swimming in the lake is allowed. If you plan on fishing make sure you have a license and follow regulations. Bringing an inflatable raft is recommended since the fish are not close to the shore. Apparently open 24/7 and all year round.

Have done this hike a couple of times over the summer - love it! Quite the workout near the very top and loose gravel makes it bit tricky coming down. The view is beautiful! Make sure to pack lots of water for you and your four legged friends!

Great hike! Snow is packed down for most of it. And you start the ascent up to the ridge line the snow is minimal and it is muddy conditions. Yak tracks or spikes recommended for the lower portions in the trees as it is quite slippery. We proceeded as far as we felt comfortable on the ridge. Not much for tracks after the first summit. Wouldn’t recommend the full traverse right now, better as an out and back. The larches are still holding on! May be able to enjoy them for one more weekend.

Nice hike did yesterday October 20,2018

I liked hiking the trail counter clockwise. 3.5 hr loop for us.

made up to to the edge of the treeline before the storm caught up to us. had to stop just short of the pass. still, awesome trail, had lots of fun doing it. there were people there, but it was mostly empty

Relatively easy hike with good views of the lake

Nice trail, good views, easy to walk up without any gear, would recommend ice trekkers if the weather gets worse.

What a beautiful day to hike Elk. first time and I will hike Elk again and can't wait to snowshoes Elk.

4 out of 5 because of the very long time spent in the forest, which by all means is nice, but is also the majority of the hike. Totally worth it, though. Great views at the pass and very pretty. Definitely wouldn’t rate this as hard by any means, so long as you have the endurance to do the length of the trail. The elevation gain is very gradual. No steep sections or ridges to negotiate.

I had a lovely afternoon hike with my dog. It is out of the city but is close enough for a spur of the moment hike. Trails are well marked and easy for a casual walk. Muddy spots.

Hiked October 20, 2018, the temperature was great, but a bit windy. The views at the top were spectacular. We were supposed to continue on to the Jewel Pass but the path going up was full of snow and slippery so for safety reasons we opted not to, we took the same route going down, we aren’t seasoned hikers by the way. It was a good hike. I highly recommend it.

Hiked this trail Oct.20th. Elk View road was closed leading to the trailhead. Not sure of when it will be re opened but we found a way to get there from the back roads. This hike was unreal!!! Amazing views highly recommend!

Hiked this trail on October 20th. Conditions were very icy in the morning (micro spikes / cleats highly recommended) but as the day warmed up things began to thaw (pretty muddy and slushy). Beautiful views and still a good time to see some larches. We saw some bear tracks while still in the forest but did not see any bears.

Pretty foggy day last Thanksgiving weekend but still beautiful. Lots of people, but that was to be expected.

If you take the dirt road up to the parking lot, it’s only a 5 mile trail. Beautiful walk through the forest with Moss covered logs and huge cedar and hemlock trees. Nice picturesque lake at the end. The fall colors are lovely this year!

This trail is beautiful! Lots of very steep stairs. At the parking area resides the Nastiest port-o-potty I have ever been in, and I work construction!

I love this hike. Enjoyed the views at the lake

Asolutely stunning hike. We left early with headlamps on and watched the sunrise at the first false summit. You definitely need ice trekkers or yaktracks as it is super iced up and snowy up top. Poles and gloves were also helpful as some areas are deep and unstable underfoot. This was my favourite hike so far in the area! Be safe and enjoy

Even though it was a cloudy day there were beautiful views. There was hard packed icy snow for the last 50-100 m, other than that it was completely dry. The ridge also has the same icy snow so I didn't go for it. It doesn't look like anyone else is doing the ridge either as there aren't any tracks on it. Crampons or spikes not needed, but I would definitely recommend poles for the hike/run down.

Super good weekend

Nice elevation. Trail can be sketchy to follow sometimes. Presence of snow in the top and some lower areas. Excellent view from the top.

Completed on the 16th of October. The initial 5-6kms of forrest is nothing special. However, once you break out into the meadows you get some spectacular views! They make it worthwhile.
The trail is covered in snow/ice at this time of year. Cleats were a big help.
