Great trail so close to Denver. Hiked a week ago and got into some snow near first lake. Can't wait to go back next summer or when I get some snow shoes!

Beautiful views! I brought my dog to hike and she loved it- we met several other people with dogs too who were all very friendly. I didn’t wish I had snow shoes until the end when I started sinking in waist deep snow and my dog started disappearing completely under the snow- it was moderately challenging but well worth it!

Yaktracks and layers made this possible and as wonderful as well. Will be back !

This is a great trail to couple with the Squaw mountain. I would suggest doing this one first. This one is still an easy trail, but is slightly more difficult than Squaw. The incline a little more steep. My opinion is this is better because it’s more in the woods and the trail is more fun. The views at the top are stunning as well.
You will be able to identify the parking on the side of the road but the trailhead is easy to miss. It’s on the other side of the road and is a small entry.

As of 11/10/2018 the trail is covered in snow but I didn’t need shoe traction at all and the trail is still being used enough that the path is obvious. A great, short hike with unbelievable views at the top. Download the PeakFinder app for some fun after summiting.

We really enjoyed this hike. We encountered only one other trail user. We used winter hiking boots with crampons. This was sufficient to make it all of the way to the end of the trail. No need for snowshoes or backcountry skis today. It snowed throughout our hike and was windy, especially when nearing the lake at the end. There's a waterfall flowing into the lake which isn't frozen over yet. A thin layer of ice currently coats most of the lake. A standard car with good all season tires can make it to the foot of the trailhead.

Honestly, really incredible views. Tough elevation climb and there’s a bit of uphill near the end on the way back which was especially challenging. We went in late October on a warm clear day and it was beautiful, challenging, and very fun. Enjoyed doing the labyrinth/maze on the side of the trail too, about half way up :)

Great hike! We went last Friday and it was a beautiful day. The trail was icy and snow packed in some areas and even more so the closer we got to the lake.

Bring spikes! Great mini hike with incredible views.

Easy trail with great 360 views. Requires crampons in fall due to packed ice and inclines

What a perfect trail for beginners, out of towners, and people who want a short day. Easy trailhead to get to. Easy, well-maintained trail, and a great destination. Beautiful drive up and view from the top of Chief Mountain.

This has quickly become one of our favorite hikes. The elevation gain is serious, but there are only a few spots that get challenging. The lake is peaceful, and we had it to ourselves today. It does get snowy and icy, so wear your spikes or bring your poles.

Great simple hike. The trail is in and out of light snow. I had micro spikes on but they were not necessary. The trail was half wet/muddy, half dry. Some deeper drifts, avoidable if you skip the upper lake but as long as it's cold, post holing would be unlikely. Snow is still shallow and sparse enough to summit Square Top Mountain as well.

Snow covered most of the trail and was all packed down, though slick in many spots. The wind was pretty cutting at points and at the top, so definitely bring a wind breaker. I'd also advise on gloves if you have trekking poles, I did not have gloves and regret it.

The hike was beautiful and the view from the top was incredible. I went on a Wednesday afternoon and had the entire mountain to myself.

Beautiful views at the top! I’d consider the hike to be overall easy if there’s not snow. I went on 10/20 and the majority of the trail had hard, slippery snow.

It was a gorgeous day to hike. I started early and there was no one on the trail all the way up to Diamond Lake. I did wear spikes the entire way due to ice and snow. I couldn't have hiked the last mile without them. My dog was with me and we had a blast. Yes, the road is awful to drive on but if you're a confident driver, you can make it. Please PULL OVER if someone is behind you and you're coasting down (or up) the road. It was a celebratory hike for my 61st birthday and the day couldn't have been nicer.

Stock Wrangler JLU up and down with ease in 4wd High at the end of summer. Fun trail with great rewards; more to explore in Jeep and on foot. Nonmotorized use allowed year round according to gate’s sign in the AllTrails photos, Sean D, but it also says no parking at the gate.

I hiked the trail on Friday and it was completely passable, though snow covered and a little icy in some patches from the snow getting packed down from foot traffic. The second half of the trail is exposed above the tree line. It could get windy at the top, though the weather was very warm and nice. Amazing 360 views at the top. I imagine this trail would be an excellent choice in any season!

This trail is terrible and depressing.
There are mounds of cut trees and debris that the forest service I guess has been cutting down for some time.
Don’t waste your time , plus trail is not well marked and turns into a wide road in the dirt probably for the loggers. With not much views and all of this going on no wonder there was no one there on a Sunday afternoon.

Always a great hike! Views are beautiful.

great hike for beginners and family time! Dogs are welcomed and the views at the top are worth the work

The views on this hike are amazing. Make sure at this time of year you bring proper gear. Sheer ice in places made it extremely slippery coming down

Excellent hike. Snow packed so very slippery in places. At the top is beautiful...50+ degree weather was perfect.

Question - can you still hike to the lake with the gates officially closed?

closed for the season as of Oct 18, 2018. disappointed. I took my stock Raptor up, zero issues... not even close to breaking a sweat. With a stock half ton truck, you will likely bottom out in a few spots, especially the first rut. Subarus won't make it without damage, end of story. looked promising but the gate was closed about 3/4 mile up. tight turn around.

Beautiful views from the top. Easy hike, 1.5 hours round trip with about 10 minutes the summit.

Did this trail after some snow, beautiful on the way up and at the top! Gets pretty steep and challenging towards the tree line, be prepared to stop and catch your breath. Because of the snow, I was not able to make it all the way to the top (did not have the right equipment) but above tree line the views are still amazing. Definitely doing this again later with the right equipment to reach the top! I can easily say this is my favorite spot now in Colorado.

Fabulous views as you go up, and it's definitely worth it to scramble up to the top. The trail had heavy traffic though, making it not as peaceful as I would have liked. With snow on the trail, the traffic really packed it in, making it fairly slick.

Amazing beautiful Trail! Fantastic rock formations if you go all the way up. We will be back. Camped at
Goose Creek campground, but could have camped on the trail. Got fantastic photos!
