Amazing but hard hike, definitely a work out!

Great trip. The trail splits at about 2.8 miles or so. Guidebooks day to take the right fork. We did on the way out- limited shade switchbacks and rocky but beautiful. On the way back we took the other fork. This was super enjoyable and had two river crossings that were easy in low water. Lots of camp spots around the lake. Only two other camp groups. Caught some trout.
Did find the offshoot for the Lappi Lake hike and followed it for a few hundred yards until it disappeared. Would love to go on this if it were maintained.

The trail to Bass Lake is wonderful and maintained. A few notes for those going to the lake/camping and considering going further:
1. The trail splits half way through - a high road that avoids the stream and a low road that crosses the stream. They are unmarked. Be aware if you have a party that gets stretched out as you could miss one another.
2. Soon after you get to the lake, trail maintenance stops. The camping spots are on the southwestern corner of the lake, so be careful on the unmaintained portion. The “trail” goes and stays high above the water pretty much until you get to the WSW part of the lake. After that you can follow the shore and find a camping spot. There are several.
3. For those considering going over unmaintained Bass Pass and down into the Kootenai drainage, I recommend against it. You could make it from the lake to the pass (truly little to no trail and a ton of deadfall) to then attempt the summit of Bass Peak, but further than that is extremely dangerous. There is no trail to follow and is a scramble across boulders, deadfall, down the creek, and thick trees and undergrowth. We came the opposite way and could have easily gotten stuck or seriously hurt. It took more than 8 hours to reach the lake from the Kootenai trail. We would have quickly turned back had we not been meeting someone at the lake. It took 2 of our hiking poles. Can’t emphasize this enough - don’t do it.

Great hike! Mostly flat trail with a lake along the way and a pretty waterfall at the end. Low traffic and we got the waterfall area to ourselves.

This hike was amazing!!! It’s a very quick and easy hike up to heart lake (I am not a super frequent backpacker and weigh around 200lb so REALLY it’s an easy hike) the beginning is pretty much 2.5 miles of flat with about a 1/2 mile of elevation gain and then maybe another 1/2 mile to the lake. there are plenty of camping sights, we stayed at one at the very end that was fantastic. There are lots of mountain goats so pee far away from camp unless you want big, white, huffing visitors in the night. Great spot for first time backpackers or for a day hike. 10/10 planning to go back soon.

P.S. the map that this site gives you through google is kind of crazy. I would recommend just googling the hike, every other site recommends I-90 exit 47 for superior onto diamond match road and then you follow that 30miles to the hike, much easier!

My very first hike-and my favorite. I live in OH & I had to change my breathing yet the trail itself was moderate, the elevation was what I needed to adjust too.
We brought wood for the watch tower. The man that was there when we visited was great (7/29/18). Very knowledgeable and told some great stories. So worth the hike. Temps did change, 90’s at the base and low 60’s at the watchtower. Views from the top are unbelievable-a must do!

8/7-8/9/18. Easy hike, 30 pound pack made it more moderate. Beautiful trail that is well maintained. Stayed at Heart lake for 2 nights, lots of great campsites. Day hiked to Pearl, its not as pretty as Heart. The Mt. Goats were awesome!! Had 7 of them come into our campsite, not aggressive, just hung out for a little bit. Lots of little furry creatures, my dog finally caught her chipmunk. Not too busy during the week. Bugs weren't too bad with spray. The hike to Pearl is easy to miss it goes straight up from the trail, if you hit the marshy section you've gone to far. It was only about .5 mile from Heart. 2 fitbits logged 4 miles to the site we camped. Only 1.5 miles to hit Pearl and back. 9ish miles total for both lakes.

This was a great flat hike, there was some elevation as you approach the waterfall but easy for little kids to hike. The scenery to the waterfall was not so pretty due to the forest fire from 2017 but the end of the trail was well worth the hike. I found some mushrooms and new growth along the way

Has a haunting beauty due to the fire that ravaged it last year. Still absolutely worth doing!! The water fall is a real treat.

Awesome views from the top. God is amazing. Bring lots of water to keep your hammies hydrated though, as this climb will work them.

3.7 miles, 2 hrs 26 min to the top. Difficult but doable! Rough road to the trailhead, was glad to be in a truck rather than a sedan. Gorgeous views in all directions! Very rewarding.

Really a beautiful hike. If you go out and back, you can probably do it in about 7 hours. But it’s tough the mile or so before the lake. Going downhill sucked after leaving the lake. Which is clean AF btw. Overall beautiful but may start hating life the last hour. I don’t hike that long very much!

Fun hike. Did in 2 hours 40 mins. We kept a good pace. Now back to Hamilton for a beer.

Worth the steep part between miles 3.5 and 4.5. Glad I wore good over the ankle hiking boots.

Great shaded walk along a beautiful stream loaded w brook trout. At 2mi there is a small man made pond w a fantastic view of the mountains.

Easy, gorgeous hike! Did the entire loop last year. Currently camped at Three Frogs by the start of the trail. Going again Saturday morning.

This is a fantastic trail that I will definitely return to. I agree with the reviews that this is a great family hike, but want to add one little disclaimer. I was a little nervous in a few parts with my recently-turned 5 year old son, and I was glad my wife and I had our two year old strapped to our back. The drop-off is steep in a few parts, and you could tumble for a long ways. Like I said, fantastic trail — but wanted to give a warning to those with really little hikers.

Beautiful hike, well maintained trail

Very steep trail, but well worth it. Will do again.

Two important things to know:

1) the trail is CLOSED as of September 2017. It was still closed per a sign at the trailhead on July 28 2018. This is not listed on the USFS website for some reason.

2) as some others have noted, your GPS will take you to a dead end of private land with no access to the trailhead. Directions to the trailhead are: take highway 12 form Lolo West 3 miles to FS road #612 (signs for Mormon Creek). Proceed 8 miles up Forest Road #612 up to the trailhead

Will try again some other time!

This trail is not near Sawmills Gultch. It is part of the Wallman trail.

Gorgeous trail and very easy. Beautiful to do almost anytime of the year. I went there in June and there was still some snow on the back end of the trail but overall very pleasant hike

Nice hike this morning, mostly uphill until we decided to turn back

Cool place but too many people a lot of the time. Still enjoyable but don't expect privacy during popular times of the year.

Great hike with nice waterfall view at the end.

This trail, after the fire, should be rated as difficult. After a mile in, it becomes difficult to find the trail. Often overgrown, not heavily used, rocks slid down from the fire-caused errosion. Often felt like being off-trail. Worth the hike, but slow and difficult through the long burned section.

Don’t let the short distance fool you. This one’s a calf burner! Worth every calorie burned!

This was a delightful hike! I agree, would rank this as moderate due to some steep, ongoing climbs. The bugs were present but not awful for us at the lake. Trailhead was easily accessible as well.

Great hike with well defined wide trail which made it easy to visit with my hiking buddy. Great tree canopy so you could do this hike anytime of day.

I think I would question the EASY rating this app gives this hike? The trail has several steep climbs to the lake but once there the beauty will make you forget about them. Be sure to wear your bug spray. Vicious mosquitos from the meadow to the lake. Well worth the time and the climb and Don't forget to listen for the Winter Wren singing along the way.
