Great views and a nice challenging hike with step inclines at times. My dog really enjoyed it as well.

Great beginner route to see what well traveled trails and backcountry powder feels like

Rated hard but is on the easy end of it. Not technical. Clear trail to the top. If you are able bodied this is relatively easy

Did this hike back in July of 2015. Incredible views. Camped by the parking lot and headed out early in the morning. Took about 5-6 hours total, I’d say.

11/25/2018 - Road closure for the winter was a little early this year, so you can't get to the trailhead unless you hike back in about 8 miles from the closure by Mt. Bachelor.

A great alternative (without the views) is the six lakes loop on the south side of the road closure. I went and did that instead. Beautiful but very snowy.

Great hike! Amazing views from halfway to the top. Lots of doggos, so keep them on a leash, but other than that really not too busy for the first saturday in November!

Great climb. Long way until you get to the actual mountain. Trail climbs then sorta flattened out a few times. It was nice to have those breaks.

Went this last weekend. Nice family hike. Recorded 4.5 miles round trip. Some ice on the trail but no snow and very cool iced up trees landscape at the top. Super cold and windy at the top as well. Heavy traffic.

Three pristine lakes with an awesome view!
This was a lovely trail with a lot of runnable sections. The views just kept getting better as I went! At the top of the climb where there is signage to turn to Diamond Peak view, I took a right and got a great look over the Rosary lakes. From there I continued up the PCT to an intersection for the maiden peak shelter. Would have liked to go to the top of maiden peak, but it would have tacked another 6+ miles to my trip to do it from the shelter. All in all it was 12.5 miles from the highway 58 parking lot TH to shelter, round trip.

Finished Summit 11/17, just days before road closures to be set. It was a beautiful clear day with amazing views that make the strenuous climb worth it. Had micro spikes on and took ice axe just in case but didn’t need it really. Summit is tough in November but not technical. Take plenty of water, I didn’t and regretted it.

Loads of bugs, loose soil on the way up makes the climb difficult, but the view from the top is worth it. We were fortunate to be hiking this trail during the "California Tortoiseshells" migration; Thousands of butterflies swarmed us near the peak.

Great hike! Steep, but rewarding views and wildflowers.

I did this on 11-12. It was very difficult and snow/ice were everywhere after the first mile. If you’re going to attempt it have an ice axe and crampons. It was super sketchy coming down with the snow melting and soft. The views were first rate and incredible at the top but be prepared.

PERMIT REQUIRED (Online purchase) . Fantastic trail after the first 3 miles. I ran the loop clockwise in early October and saw only one other group of hikers. There were a couple of water filter opportunities, but I wore a pack with 2 liters and didn’t need it all running in cool weather.
Views of the mountains were stunning. The obsidian was sparkling and fall foliage was bright yellow, in contrast to the evergreens.
I plan to come back during mosquito season to see the wildflowers that were brown this time of year.
Highway 242 is closed from November to whenever the snow melts, so access is cut off during the winter.

Very difficult. I am in shape, but still took me a long time to reach the summit. Worth every bit of it though, the views from the top are unlike any other. Best hike in Oregon for sure

Insane day up at South Sister. Snow covered 95% of trail and I was only able to reach the summit because I brought an ice ax and crampons. I would not attempt the last 200 ft without at least an ice ax.

Hiked Iron Mountain last week and the view was worth the work. Pack a lunch and enjoy.

Hiked up past Moraine Lake today for lunch and views. Was nice to be in the snow and get another hike in before it gets too snowy. Was fine with hiking shoes and poles. Mostly snow covered starting about 1/2 mile in from the trailhead.

As spectacular as everyone says. Passed no more than 15 or so people in both directions with long stretches of solitude including at the lake itself. Conditions: Cascade Lakes Highway clear (from Bend) except for one snowy/icy hill just west of Mount Bachelor. Trail clear for first mile or so, packed snow for the next two (not slippery), some icy hills in the final stretch -- enough that I put on traction for the trip down. Tentative road closure date is 11/19 so enjoy this trail now!

Finished this hike on 6Nov18. An inch of snow where I parked my car (the closed gate near sunrise lodge) and anywhere from 6inches to 2 feet on the route to the top depending on the drift. I did not where snow shoes but they would be needed once the snow starts to add. Recommend crampons. The trail I took to get to the top was guided by the lifts since there was no trail visible with the snow. I started at sunrise lift and followed it up until I got to the next lift which I hand railed to the top. My gps said I walked a total of 10.45 miles but who knows. The view was spectacular up top. Was a bit cloudy over the sisters but cleared in the afternoon. It was interesting to walk a ski route and I definitely felt it! Finished the hike in 4 hours and some change. Overall happy I did the hike.

Best hike I’ve ever been on. Went in August on a really hot Smokey day and it was cool. Walked next to a creek almost the entire way and took a dip in the lake at the top.

Hiked this on 10/13/18 (a beautiful, sunny Saturday) and only saw one other couple on the way in and some folks on horses on the way out. Hiked all the way to the tower at the top. Beautiful views!!

The directions on All Trails plugged into my gps on my iPhone and took us directly to the parking lot (which is very small) without any problem.

Great views reward a straight up trek.

We hiked to the top yesterday. Weather was clear and the views were amazing - smoke was just a light haze in the distance. The hike is strenuous - I do the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway hike every year and this felt just as hard, although we were moving at a pretty good pace and I haven't spent any time at altitude this year so the thin air probably hit me harder than I expected. The top third of the mountain is composed primarily of loose volcanic rocks, gravel and sand. When it's very dry (as it was yesterday) this mixture is surprisingly loose, and the descent in particular was a bit hairy with slips and trips. I highly recommend bringing poles for the descent, even if you don't like to use them to climb up.

Easy to find trailhead and it’s nicely marked. Beautiful views at the top. We stayed for a while taking pics and enjoying the views. It was a clear day so we saw all the surrounding mountains. Beautiful!

Absolutely beautiful trail. Didn’t make it all the way to the lake, but lovely by the creek all along the way. Gently sloping, not very technical.

Very well maintained trail with lots of picturesque scenery, including the river, waterfalls, forest, open space with obsidian boulders and of course - lakes and Mountain View’s. Went over Labor Day weekend, lots of other hikers but not crowded. The hike in was 2 hours. We took a 30 minute break to snack and take in the scenery then hiked out, which took 1.5 hours. Would recommend.

gets crowded, but great payoff
