Beautiful lake

the Hike is amazing. nice and open most of the day. a well maintained trail with plenty of places to stop for photo ops. saw 2 moose down in the marsh area at the first look out about a mile in.

first waterfall is only 1.5 miles in. which is where you'll start most of your elevation gain. you'll easily gain 300+ in elevation in just a few switch backs. its surprisingly pretty gradual elevation gain. little effort with a huge reward.

this hike is animal friendly. watch out for the horse poop. usually pretty busy, except on rainy days. great hike for kids and excellent plus size hiker trail.

the drive out is easily 2 hours from the Billings area. paved until you get about 10 miles west of Roscoe. then dirt and gravel road the rest of the way out. with a small paved section in the middle. the gravel on part takes as much as an hour to travel depending on speed and clearance. took my Subaru outback out and had no issues.

Not too difficult of a trail. Rocky right towards the top. Can be windy at the lake depending on weather. Took us about an hour and 15 minutes to hike up and an hour back. Beautiful views and fall colors are incredible.

What a gorgeous trail! It's pretty steep to the first lake (5mi round trip) but significantly less steep to get to the second, larger like (8mi round trip). Totally worth going that extra 1.5 miles. We also found wild raspberries!

great for small kids

Absolutely beautiful scenery & an easy hike for our group. The fall colors were starting to show (mid-September) and we didn’t encounter any bugs...or bears. There is little to no shade, so definitely wear a hat and bring sunscreen. You’ll want to take photos! This might be in my Top 5 for day hikes in the Beartooths given the incredible views.

Starts off steep for a good walking warmup. Flattens our after a quarter mile for a good run.

Really nice and relatively easy hike...some uphill climbing but mainly at the start of the trail. Then you’re rewarded with a really nice hike around the lake, with great scenery as a backdrop. Really nice little bridge over a small “waterfall” where the lake feeds a stream...very scenic. If you’re looking for a nice short hike, with more than just flat walking, I’d strongly recommend this hike!

Nice short hike. Picnic tables etc. at trailhead parking lot. Very pretty. Good hike for families and people who have difficulties on unimproved trails.

good day hike good to be in the forest. took my five month old dog no leash she loved it. our first time. we will hit the basin lakes trail next time.

The trail was easy to follow. It was a climb and took us over 2 hours to get to the lake. hiking shoes definitely recommend

Absolutely loved it ! I did continue on the trail several miles further and it was all worth it
If your debating weather or not to do this. Do it you will regret nothing.

Very beautiful and very well kept. The hike is worth every step!

Very pretty trail! Word of advice— as you walk along the creek, keep an eye out for the makeshift bridge, or you’ll end up leap frogging logs only to find a dead end. Maybe that’s a newbie mistake, but it cost me 20 minutes round trip haha. This is towards the beginning of the trail, when you’re right beside the creek in the trees. I’d also recommend going to the second lake; while the first lake is cute and scenic, it is more the size of a very large pond. The second lake is a proper mountain lake, located in a small crater with large mountains rising beside it. Worth the trip.

Awesome!

Well maintained trail. Raspberries, and Huckleberries just off the trail. Hiked to Elk Lake, bring big spray.

Short. Asphalt surface. Nice waterfall!

Great hike but the real beauty is in the first mile or two waking along the river. The views throughout are amazing but the lake at the end is slightly underwhelming. Still an amazing trail and very easy to do!

Excellent trail with breathtaking scenery. Cool temperatures at the start beside the rapids. I recommend jeans or comfortable pants due to heavy foliage at certain spots. Trail is fairly busy for about the first mile. It is a horse trail as well, so watch for the droppings. I did the trek to the Flood Creek Bridge which is 10 miles round-trip. Small children may tire quickly within the first mile. Bring two bottles of water and some trail mix. Remember to bring all your trash back out with you. Happy Trekking!!!

Simple hike with stunning views the entire journey out to Elk Lake. Plenty of waterfalls on your way out to the Lake, and a breathtaking view of the valley once you're there. And if your hot, or bold, hop in the lake and enjoy the fresh mountain water! You won't need a coffee after 10 seconds in there!

Easy hike! Breathtaking views!!

Great Hike! Be sure to cross the creek when the trail sign says keep left. It was very dark when we went and didn’t see the makeshift bridge that was back a ways. We ended up taking a big detour to find the trail again.

Nice old ranch buildings. Easy to explore.

Beware, this is a challenging hike up to the falls, add 1000 feet to the elevation, some loose gravel switchbacks that ran close to edges that plunged. 1.5 hours, couldn’t make it down dirt slide to falls, even with hiking poles. That said, it was beautiful and we passed bighorn sheep who turned and stared, unafraid. Bear and sheep scat. It was 111 degrees back at the car, bring water. Wished we’d been mentally prepared for the challenge, hence 4 stars. Parts looked a bit like a Sierra Nevada climb. The National Park service map seems to have dropped a digit on the altitude, this is steep.

Beautiful trail. Great for taking our dog.

The reward is worth it when you get to the top. The last mile isn’t easy but it’s doable. Have appropriate shoes, I saw a handful of people with tennis shoes/ no support on and they’ll probably regret that. Took us a few mins past an hour to get to the top. Highly recommend starting before 9:00 am to beat the heat.

A nice hike with varying terrain that keeps one interested and focused. It's billed as an easy family hike and thus I saw lots of unprepared hikers in improper shoes, clothing and with small children. While it is a nice day hike, one should still come prepared and know there are some somewhat dangerous areas for littles or those without proper shoes.
