for the most part this is a fairly easy trail to hike with moderate slopes and comfortable ground conditions. There are a few short reaches that are steeper and rocky with occasional rock outcrops to navigate. Because a lot of the terrain has been burned over in the last twenty(?) years there are a lot of short oaks (brush) that provide cover for the wildlife so we were treated to various viewings of mule deer and coyote. Colors were changing during our late October hike so the oaks were yellow and orange and beautiful.
the destination is reallybwhatbthis hike is ultimately about! what a few of Zion Canyon! Great place for lunch and photography! Our GPS measured the hike as 10.6 miles so this is not a short hike. If you are planning on going all the way to the canyon, you want to plan your start time right! Would do this hike again!

The end is worth it! Very few people with views toward the end and at point that are amazing!

I loved the trail. It was lightly trafficked mostly with hikers and a couple of mountain bikers. Got some amazing views from the top and also experienced the snowfall on my way up.

Beautiful trail that goes up and up and up and up. I finally made it to the rocky observation point out of the woods and turned back there.

I love this trail. I love that dogs can use the trail too. Today, however, there were three young men on dirt bikes. That was not pleasant for so many reasons. This is the first time I’ve encountered dirt bikes and I hope it’s the last.

Fantastic trail, my first in the SLC area! I went there for a hike at 5pm and found it plenty busy with local joggers, bikers, and hikers, so don't go here for an isolated experience. Still, the amazing views, great plant variety, and Mill Creek right at the start make it easy to enjoy regardless of traffic. Most of the time there is ample room to let bikers past, but later on in the route it gets skinny, so be cautious and aware of your footing when you step aside for others.

I'm a 27 y/o male, and was able to go about 2 miles in an hour. I unfortunately had to turn back then due to approaching sunset, but even without reaching the rock (which you will see long before you get there), there are some spectacular scenes, especially at "The Boulders", about 1.6 miles in on this map.

Hiking up to Elephant Rock in Mueller Park was a beautiful hike all the way up. It is about 3.5 miles up. The hike does seem a little longer than normal (a causal uphill trail with a few switchbacks). I highly recommend to bring at least 1.5 liters of water and a snack with you. Also, bring a camera the views are spectacular!
The trail was busy with hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers. So be aware of your surroundings and go on the hike early if you want to avoid traffic.

Good hardy hike. The views are great even from the saddle before the final push for the summit. Great sunset.

Winter gate is already up for the season. If you want to do this one from the starting point shown, you'll need to road walk 1.5 miles to get to the trailhead after parking at the picnic area in front of the Winter gate. Or you could connect to it via another trail that begins prior to the gate.

People complaining about there being too much dog crap should probably stick to trails where they aren't allowed. You can find these in watersheds, like the cottonwood canyons!

This trail is beautiful, a quick escape. Bikers are common, but so are hikers, so everyone stays aware of each other. Would recommend - ESPECIALLY in fall. :)

Such amazing views

Great trail and an easy hike. It’s well marked and had little traffic while we were out. The overall hike is closer to 7 miles from the Staves Spring trailhead parking. The view at the end is totally worth it! Definitely recommend!

Wish I'd brought gloves and spikes cause it was damn cold after the saddle and slippery on the way down. Beautiful hike though, will do again.

Nice trail. Very muddy right now with melted snow. A lot of downed branches across the path at the moment.

I would mirror Julie Kirby’s comments. Great trail for running, beautiful, but way too many people. Also way too much dog crap on the trail.

I did this hike on the morning of one of the first dustings of the year. The snow level was about 7500 feet. As many have stated, it is fairly steep but I didn’t find it that strenuous and it wasn’t technical. You accumulate almost 2000 feet of elevation gain in less than 2 miles. I reached the top in about a hour. There was limited visibility when I reached the summit and there wasn’t any cairns marking the summit so i wasn’t sure I reached the summit but the AllTrails app marked my spot at the summit. As far as summits go, this one is very accessible and achievable in under 2 hours. Great hike to do with your dog because it doesn’t require any scrambling.

love the history

Loved this hike. We loved the fall colors.

This trail is great for trail running. My only complaint is its popularity. Too many people. It thinned out after the first 2 miles. I clocked this at 7 miles to elephant rock and back.

Perfect time of year. Perfect trail to start trail running or get back into trail running.

Steady incline the whole way up the trail, but not bad since it is only 2 miles to the top. Pretty shaded most of the trail. Pretty views all the way to the top.

Love this hike! And the mountain bikers are very courteous of the hikers. Beautiful.

Very steep but the view is definitely worth it! Took me about an hour and a half total.

As the reviewer before me stated, the difficulty is very subjective. It’s as hard as you make it! I carried in 2 gallons of water and still wished I had a little more, but not sure if it’s worth the extra weight! I conserved and took my last sip 100 feet from where I was parked! Remember hole in the rock road is 2 hours of dirt and no services, so make sure you have lots to drink waiting for you in your vehicle! Then hit Nemo’s in Escalante!

easiest 6 miles of my life. well established trail. some bikers but everyone is pretty cautious of hikers! beautiful views all the way up!

Loved this trail it was so beautiful ♥️♥️

great views but tough. this hike will let you know what your fitness level is, for sure. I'm no speed hiker and it took me about 3 hours to complete.

I love this trail

Fairly easy hike, first part is a steady slight incline, eventually it levels out and then its just cake walk. Trail gets busy with runners and bikers but views are beautiful.
