The end of the hike is brutal. The entire hike gets your heart pumping. Passed 4 people on a Saturday. Saw some nudists up at the lake, what could be better :)

Nice views with the leaves changing colors. The last 1/4 mile had some tough steep hills. Certainly got the heart pounding.

Great hike to Fancy Lake today-9/19/18. We didn’t start til noon. Fairly easy climb. Lots of good switchbacks. Thank you trail groomers! This lake is stunningly beautiful! Next time we’ll hike on through to Missouri Lake.

Great trail minus the horse poo... Lots of elk hunters out currently. Only saw 2 deer on the trail. Lake is gorgeous. Hike the entire loop if possible. I believe the AllTrails mileage is off though. Our gps tracker said 5 miles to the lake from the Gilpin trail.

Not crowded at all, we passed maybe 4 people all day. Gorgeous hike, especially in the fall.

I loved this trail! It is a good workout but not too hard. It is well maintained. There are plenty of beautiful sights along the way and at the end there is a very big payoff in the way of a beautiful lake surrounded by an awesome rotunda of rock. I took a dip in the lake and it was exhilarating to say the least. Highly recommended

Amazing hike. Did it as a very long day hike, took ~9 hours. Didn’t see any other hikers except for on the out-and back to the Causeway. Saw a couple friendly bow hunter groups on horseback. Amazing weather, mid-Sept is a great time of year to explore this area as the aspens have started to turn. A bit tricky to follow the trail along the Chinese wall, you’ll lose it and find it again if you stay in the general direction.

Absolutely beautiful hike!!

I hiked to the bottom lake on 15 September 2018. I probably should not have. wasnt ready for this trail. lol. know your limitations, then pass them by. awesome hike. so beautiful. friendly people along the way. 3 hours to the first lake for me. 2.5 hours back down. my goal is to get down to 1.5 hours going up. definitely recommend this hike. dont quit. the view is worth the a fib. lol

Tough hike but very beautiful. The road to the trailhead was a long dirt road but not bad as far as clearance goes-- only the last mile or so was uncomfortably bumpy/slow, I imagine most vehicles could make it up. The beginning of the trail is steep, then it levels out a little with less dramatic gains. Don't be fooled by the first lake you come to... continue up about another 1/4 mile ish to see the bigger lake, it's worth it! Gorgeous water color and mountain backdrop. Highly recommend this for a great workout and views. Not too much fall color change on the hike bc of the tree composition in the area, but the drive from Minturn was stunning with tons of aspens.

This is one of the most enjoyable hikes I have ever done. Gorgeous views the whole way. Mild ascent to the first lake followed by a short (but steep) climb to the upper lakes. Hiked this trail on 9/15 to enjoy the fall colors.

Absolutely love this trail! The views all the way to the top were breathtaking, especially since the leaves had begun to change.

Couple of things to plan for:

- The first part of the hike and the last stretch up to the top are deceivingly steep. Be prepared!

- There are no trashcans, so think about what you are going to do with your trash/ dog waste prior to starting!

- There is less parking the longer you wait to get to the trailhead. The early bird gets the worm!

Can’t say enough good things about this trail! It’s a great workout for both people and dogs, with views that can’t be beat! Highly recommend!

Beautiful, easy hike around the lake. Good family hike.

Pretty challenging. Super windy and the sun was strong. Bring a wide-brim hat, sunscreen, and stuff for your lips so they don't get cracked. Beautiful!

This hike was beautiful. Challenging but totally worth it- the scenery was amazing. Definitely bring lots of water and be mindful of the elevation. It’s a popular trail so you will definitely be in company with lots of other hikers along the way. Our dog had a blast as well!

My husband, dog, and I hiked this trail today. First things first, this trail is wayyyyyy more than advertised. We clocked it at almost 9 miles with our GPS watch. Besides that, Ice Lake was absolutely beautiful - blue and full of water. The scramble further to island lake had some sketchy spots that I would have loved to use trekking poles on. Island Lake itself wasn’t as pretty as Ice Lake but still cool I guess. The water was kind of green and not nearly as striking as the ice blue water.
As far as the trail goes, it starts out in a nice pine forest that goes in and out of sunny aspen meadows (some of the leaves already started turning yellow which was beautiful!). Finally you get to a clearing where it flattens out a little followed by a pretty long and difficult climb to Ice Lake. The scramble to Island lake was less than a mile.

From TH near Dinkle Lake (8635’) , first 4 miles to very scenic Thomas Lakes are slightly rocky gently uphill (+1400’), then mile 5 is more rocky and steep (+700’). Next 1.5 miles are extremely steep (+1400’) and mostly on generally stable broken rock with moderate exposure and includes a false summit (12402’). Last 3/4 is steep (+800’), but the trail is generally visible all the way to the east summit (12954’). Very windy this date which stopped any attempt to include the west summit, which is an additional 3/4 mile down a saddle (-300’) and then back up to an almost identical summit elevation. Views from the summit in all directions are spectacular, and even more spectacular from the west summit. Three 65 year olds made the total round trip in about 8.5 hours with about 1.5 hours of stops along the way.

Waterfalls everywhere on the way up, ice lake was gorgeous...I’ve never seen water so blue. Island Lake is a quick scramble over. We took the loop down...it was steep! I’m glad we took the trail to lower basin, ice lake, island lake...because there is a spot where the trail cuts and you can hike to island first. I would not recommend. We saw a bobcat on our way out. Can’t wait to explore more in the area. There is a camp ground at the base and a few places to camp if backpacking by the lower basin. (Hiked mid August)

The leaves are starting to turn on the way up. The water color of the lake is as blue as Maroon Bells! Beautiful turquoise! Chilly water temp. Will do the full circle next time.

We completed a overnight backpacking trip this past weekend, and it was absolutely perfect. It stormed a bit at night, but was perfectly clear by morning. There were plenty of other people staying overnight, but there are so many nooks to camp in that it was easy to feel like you were nearly alone. Incredible views and many places to scramble and explore around the lakes.

Hiked this trail yesterday. Arrived at 7:15 am and only saw a few people on the way up. I had the lake all to myself at the top! Steep at the beginning and steep again before reaching the lake. Nice views and fall color. No snow.

Gorgeous views and this trail has it all! A valley, a river, peaks and an alpine lake. Nice distance for a good workout. Decent amount of incline at beginning and end heading to the lake-- definitely a "moderate" trail but nothing challenging or technical. Within an hour of Denver and easy to get to the trailhead. We happened to arrive on a day where a trail race was taking place which was unfortunate, but obviously not a daily occurrence. Small rant: So many dogs off leash... which is annoying. Please put your dog on leash or call them close to your side when passing those who are following the rules and keeping their dog on leash (like me!) I am helpless in the case of a scuffle if my dog is on leash and yours isn't.

This was my first ever backpacking experience. Nothing will make you feel like you over packed quite like this incline! It was definitely hard but so worth the trek. We went the Thursday and Friday before Labor Day to avoid the weekend camping crowd. The views and feeling of seclusion was a great way to round out summer. You can’t have fires up in the campground area, so be sure to pack some fuel for a camp stove and pack layers. It was fairly windy most of our stay there, but being in the tent at night was plenty cozy.

This hike was beautiful! It was my first backpacking trip and I was not disappointed! The day I went, there was a chance of a storm... luckily there wasn’t. My friends and I truly enjoyed it! Awwwww sooo fun! The incline was a little strenuous, but nothing too difficult!

Beautiful hike, the leaves are changing, but there is highway noise at the beginning of the trail where the leaves are mainly changing. Once you pass the first initial incline and hit the waterfall, the traffic noise subsides. The hike is steep and I would consider it hard, but not too challenging if you are in decent shape. The lake is gorgeous at the top, to get to the lake turn left at the top when the trail splits.

Busy area and trail but very beautiful. I thought the atv's were loud until a car full of tourists showed up around 6 a.m. On my way down, a group of young white people, whom thought I was out of earshot or just didn't care, started making fun of how I looked. Sad way to end the day but everyone else I crossed trails with earlier in the day, was very kind.

Beautiful hike! The leaves are changing and the views are gorgeous : ) The elevation gain in spots can be tough, but the views are worth it! It took me 2 hours 30 min round trip. I consider myself an intermediate hiker. Plenty of parking and it was not crowded when I went on Saturday. I started the hike at 3. I will definitely be back!
