Bear Mountain is beautiful. This was an absolutely awesome day trip. We had a lot of fun and the views at the top were amazing, the weather was also perfect which made it even more beautiful. Our dog had such a good time too, love seeing him so happy out in the wilderness.

Nice views, but insanely crowded. There are nicer hikes in the area in places like Storm King State Park.

The trail itself is awesome, especially the first 1.5 miles. But the crowds are out of control.

Super scenic! Easy reverse hike (downhill first). Pretty sure it’s only 1 mile total.

Really enjoyed this hike. Well marked and offered a variety of easy to moderate hiking. Views are amazing

Just a gorgeous trail... lots of varied terrain that’s challenging but do-able. Especially beautiful in late May/early June, but gorgeous all season long.

amazing views and the labyrinth was challenging but rewarding to hike

Did the actual 3.9 bear mtn loop. What....a....climb...i did the loop counter clockwise starting off with the rock/trail climb. It was pretty tough the leaves and ground were still slippery from the rain that had fallen the day/night before and it got very steep at times. As soon as i hit memorial drive from the path i thought it was over then i saw a nice stair trail on the other side of the road leading up towards the tower. Beautiful views and the trail coming down was very pleasant and easy. ( thats if you do the loops counter clockwise but honestly both ways are a killer lol) GREAT hike.

Hi Hikers,

We are wandering if this loop is doable in winter ? We'll be in NYC next January and would like to have a break in the nature.

Do you think is possible ? Did someone already experiment this ?

Thank you so much for your advice !

Beautiful views!

Great Time with the girls hiking at Bear Mountain the pass Sunday. This hike is challenging, pretty steep in the beginning super intense incline about 30 mins worth all the rocks. Stuffed from severe cramps it’s all worth to see the Beautiful View on the top. ⛰ We did counter clockwise. Easier to incline and take the stairs back down. I would say this Trail is little harder than Modern.

If you’re heavy or out of shape this will be a difficult hike for you. The first 1.25 mile is a 75 degree rock scramble where you are literally on your fours the entire time. It’s exhilarating if you’re a regular hiker. I hiked all the way up to the fire tower on the white trail & it is totally worth it.

Do not come back on the yellow trail - that adds another 6 mile to your hike most of it downhill.

Great workout. Did the trail to the tower and back on the yellow trail. 10 miles, but so worth it. Was a gorgeous day. From the top of breakneck to the fire tower I did not come across any other people, but I did start at 7:40. The yellow trail coming back was quite wet from all the rain we had, but very pretty with the fall colors and the running streams. This was my first time doing the yellow trail on this side of the mountain and I had to back track a few times to find the yellow markers and use my GPS. So if this is your first time, be on the lookout for yellow markers. Well worth it, but it's quite a workout.

Did the trail counterclockwise- up the rocks and down the stairs. Not very long but challenging. The elevation changes sharply - pretty steep most of the way (check the topography map). Beautiful view at top. Started getting crowded on the way down. Definitely not a remote hiking spot especially on weekends in the summer. Come early if you want to avoid crowds. I suggest hiking sticks, especially on way down.

Worth doing again and again and again.

Breathtaking hike. Except that it’s no joke. It’s as hard as it gets with great rewarding views! You might think you are done but it is a long stretch of rock scrambling. I did the white trail and then red trail which then led to a waterfall immediately after which there was the yellow trail.

This hike is challenging but doable. First, when going up you should go counter clockwise. We did and watching people slide down the rocks on their behinds just looked painful. Plus the hike is more rewarding going up on that side. Second, make sure you wear good gripping hiking boots. The trail is wet and there are some serious rocks you need to grip to. Third, stretch and make sure your ankles are in good shape. Lots of places to twist your ankle.
I’m not sure what this map was showing but you take the trail up to the tower then you go down on the appalachian trail (all steps btw) and it’s heavily trafficked. We parked next to the bear mountain inn that way we could use the bathroom before heading out.
Downsides: People at the top near the tower can be obnoxious. Loud music, people sitting on the trail, lots of motorcycles revving their engines, there was a guy flying a drone at eye level at the vista. You can hear cars, chainsaws, motorcycles and people on most of this trail. It’s also slammed with people on the weekends. So go early and during the week.

This was definitely not as hard as made out to be, it’s long, about 8 miles in total but not really not that difficult. I was expecting a few rock scrambles but there isn’t anything that I would call a scramble like at breakneck or crag rock. There is a decent sized section when you are walking through a stream and that for me was the hardest because it was slippery. The ascent up was not that bad either. It was a great hike with spectacular views, but not the adventure I was expecting from some of the reviews

Love LOVE this trail. Such a great workout. Can be very difficult if your are not used to resistance or using your knees, pulling yourself up. The views up here are breath taking. I enjoy it mostly in the fall. The best part is visiting silver spoon for an amazing meal in cold springs

Had an awesome time. The white trail is a rock climbing at first, very challenging but for me it felt easy and fun. My first hike and out of shape but enjoyed it and I lead the way al the time :), it can be done!! Trail is well marked and easy to follow, even after a rainy day the hike was great and fun!! Views were breathtaking and will do it again and again! Fall views are amazing!!! Loved it!!

Amazing view from top

Love it a bit scary for my first experience but definitely will do it again.

There is a $10 park entrance fee, but worth it. This trail is awesome. Didn't really understand the signs at the far end. It said private trail, but there was no way we were going to backtrack that far so we went right through

Nothing I read ahead of this hike prepared me for the reality of it. I love hiking and rock scrambles and have done many, including the face of Sleeping Giant and Breakneck Ridge. To me, this was by far the scariest hike I have ever completed especially the last 10 feet until the top (Lemon Squeeze). That section took me a long time to overcome fear and persevere to the top. Once to the top it was breathtakingly beautiful but I cannot say I ever want to do this hike again. Still gets 5 stars though!

Breakneck more than deserves its positive reputation. The trail is extremely well marked and its accessibility via public transportation is amazing. It can be more or less challenging depending on the routes you pick, and while some hiking experience would be helpful, I think most moderately fit people could do it with ease. Definitely wear shoes with a good tread too, especially if you go in the fall when the leaves are down. Overall an awesome hike!

Still one of my favorite day hikes in the area.

Hiked on Oct. 25th, trail was dry and quiet. Leaves are pretty much at peak color.

Nor’easter this weekend... Oct. 27th... will likely make trail conditions muddy and bring down a lot of leaves... sadly.

Beautiful hike during autumn.

Some really great views! Hell of a climb up and down though. I've done it twice so far. 100% wanna go again.

Lots of rock scrambling and the views are completely spectacular. One of the best hikes in the NY area.
