Awesome! Great incline going up the mountain. Great Cardio. I did the hike solo and felt safe. Going down the hill I chose the harder trail and it was a little rocky so I slid a couple of times but other then that it was a great hike I would definitely do it again!!

This is a solid Sunday hike. It took me about an hour and a half. It reminds me a lot of Cowels Mtn but not as steep and 90% less crowded! Beautiful 360 degree views at the top. It’s more of a mtn biking trail than a hiking trail but I really enjoyed it. It’s super close to Encinitas and really perfect for dogs.

Did this hike for the second time today and it is always fun and a really nice view. The first time we went, it was definitely a lot more difficult since the other trail down was much much steeper, but it is permanently closed now. I assume that was for safety reasons, but now the trail is a lot easier so I was a teensy bit bummed out about that. Not a huge deal though, still a wonderful and beautiful hike!

was beautiful can wait till spring hopefully when the water is flowing still so amazing!!

I went in the morning of Dec 1, 2018 after some good rain. Still no water, but a great time as always. My Garmin watch clocked at 5.09 miles round trip. A bit of bouldering at the falls to get to the top but nothing too hard. The new path around the part where you used to climb down and up the hill made this trail easier in a good way. As always make your own way and be safe.

It’s an amazing hike is not that hard but take a lot of water with you

There’s a bathroom and fountain (including doggie fountain) at the Tamarack Ave trailhead. Not many a lot of places within the trail to throw out dog waste bags so you may have to walk around with them for a bit. It is kind of easy to get lost, not many signs, but over all a good easy hike.
**depending on the route you take to the peak there are some semi steep inclines and declines, would suggest hiking boots if you have them**

Great hike, though just a bit too busy on the weekends. Keep in mind that dogs can’t make it through the slot since you have to climb up a ladder at a certain point.

Easy comfortable hike. Cool in the afternoon.

Recommend early morning or late afternoon as there is no shade and not much to see.

Did this in September. It was hotter and harder than expected, but still very fun. It was also completely dry, though we knew that going in. Will go back in the spring when there’s water.

A few warnings: It gets HOT, there’s almost zero shade, and the uphill on the way back is often STEEP/sometimes narrow. I’d say this is definitely NOT a great trail for dogs (several dogs have died on trails recently), and would be hesitant to take kids younger than 12-13 yrs. like everyone is saying— bring lots of water!

Short but lots of fun!

my son, granddaughter and I had a wonderful time exploring the trails and area. trails were easy to navigate, steep near the volcano

Love climbing through the canyons and the views of the water. Quick but fun hike that doesn’t take up a whole day. Easy to park and walk down.

Fun hike with the family

Not much of a hike, but the slot canyons are very cool and worth checking out

Not really a hike but not really a walk either. Great training location with lots of options in side trails and such. My normal route covers about 6 miles.

I have been wanting to do this one for a while. There was no water when I went but it was still pretty cool. To get there it is all down hill, that means it is a pretty steep hike on the way back. Every one says it is crowded. I went late afternoon and there were only a handful of people out. Most of the time I was just completely by myself. Cool hike though!

Looks as though this hike will have a few new views soon. Sign posted for new community, Near the dead end gate area. This is a fun hike though and we have added to this hike in the past to make it even longer. Always nice to get away from the hustle and bustle.

Beautiful scenes with an element of adventure and climbing. we loved this quick and easy to get to trail.

What a special “canyon niche” this is, in Solana Beach, of all places! Must enter thru North Rios Street - San Elijo Lagoon. Definitely, a “one way” short “climb, with a few unexpected photo ops along the way.

The description says forest setting, but this is a fully exposed trail, no forest. The trail has a technical element with some loose rock and gravel, but it’s hardly impactful on your hike because the incline is so very gradual. This trail is next to a neighborhood and is fairly close to a main road that can be heard on the trail.

I take the shortcut trail going up on the right (west) side, after the housing area and the large water tank. This hike is only about three miles, but is great for getting the legs, heart and lungs pumping because of steep incline.

Great trail! Lots of steep ups and downs. Foggy morning, so I'll have to come do it again to see the views.

Everyone should come out and hike this trail that leads to a fun little adventure.

I really liked this hike. Short, but steep! And fun! I wasn't expecting it to be so steep for so long. I couldn't hear any civilization, only birds. I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere. Just look beyond the subdivision (which is hidden by hills most of the time) and gaze at the ocean in the distance. It was just challenging enough, serene, and pretty. I went up the north side, and down the south. I met someone who hikes there every day, and he said that was the harder route to go. Both seems comparable, though.

Amazing views! My son loved seeing all the mountain bikers. The view at the top was incredible. We will do this one again!

This was a great hike. Not too easy, not too hard....just right :-).
A great hike for beginners or intermediate hikers.
This is a great workout hike and could easily be done several times a week.
