Amazing hike! We took the shorter trail which is quite steep but a great workout and takes less time. Very much worth it!

Nice hike, really get a workout in with some of the elevation.

So, the reviews had me a bit worried when I first hiked this trail (12/11/18). It is a reasonable hike and something that hikers with intermediate stamina can complete, albeit somewhat depending on which route one takes (intermediate or hard).. The first mile is quite steep, and then levels off. At about 1.5 miles, at the Punked Out trail sign, there is a junction--the right-side path goes straight to the top, or to where the map marks as the turnaround point of this trail (0.6 mile), and the path on the left goes to the same place (1.6 miles). The shorter path, as you would guess, is a lot steeper. So, take your pick and determine the difficulty of the trail. Once on top, go another 0.2-0.3 miles and look for a not-so-easy-to-notice path on the left for a short climb to the true top. Overall, this is an enjoyable hike, especially if you like to hike in green mountains with the snow-capped ones in the background. As far as parking goes, the two possible start/stop points are about a half mile away--park on the Glendora Mountain Rd. to start where the map suggests, or park about 0.5 mile down the road on Big Dalton Canyon Rd. and start at the Mystic Canyon Trail.

New rules, park hours are sunrise to sunset. Railings are added to a large portion of the parking lot. I am sad I can no longer hike this in the winter.

Beautiful hike, but do it early to beat the heat and the crowds!

This hike is definitely worth it. It’s also worth paying the $10 to park. They have excellent, well maintained facilities at the lake, and the trail is also very well maintained. If you are a trail runner this is ideal because the path is relatively smooth and even for the first stretch, then when it gets steep there are rock stairs or rock gardens. There was not one place that was sketchy to navigate.

I’d call this a moderate hike because while somewhat long and a bit a steep at places, you never question your life or abilities. Hard hikes, I think, should have you second-guessing your ability to complete them. This hike never required any thought. It was smooth.

Also, I thought I’d be showing up “late” when I started about 7:45am on Sunday, 12/9. It wasn’t crowded at all and I had long stretches to myself. There were a few groups going up but not too many. And while I didn’t take a picture, there was no line do so. Definitely more people on the way down (coming up), but there were a few large groups. Bottom line, don’t stress if you are not there at sunrise, you can still get some alone time in. And there’s a lot of shade in the morning. It took me about 1:20 to get up and 50 minutes to come down, and I ran part of the way down.

If you need a hike to really kick your ass, try El Cajon Mountain. Even if you don’t go the full 11 miles, it is challenging and up hill both ways!

Beautiful views, very well maintained trail, easy street parking. IG: yvonne_rebecca

Phone read 4.00 miles in 1:00:40 with 596 ft elevation gain, and I hung out at the falls for 10-15 minutes. Extremely mild hike other than a couple water crossings and a “steep” section near the falls. Falls were great a couple days after a hard rain.

This is a fine hike, nothing spectacular, except for the view near the end of the trail. OK for families with kids.

Definitely a good hike that wears you out on the way up....as long as you hike the side starting at the lake. Will definitely hike again soon.

Beautiful views at the top. Not very difficult if you use common sense.

A great trail that has a view making it worth it. in the early spring you might see some water in the tank itself.

Creds: AllTrails Pro. ‘Pro’ worth $30 a year to never worry about getting lost - lots of opportunity . 14.5 mi hike per ‘AllTrails’. I-Phone 8 - 15 mi. My friends Iphone6 - 16 mi. This was an 8 hr hike given the significant altitude gain 4,646’.

Parked and departed 1 Dec 2018 Saturday 8am at Chantry Flats. Have annual Adventure Pass for $29 from REI that provides access to all southern Ca National Parks.

Went counter clockwise. Trails well maintained. Creek and Sturtevant Falls flowing due to rain 2 days ago and trails not muddy. 90% shaded from beautiful canopy of Bay Laurels, Oaks, pine trees. Hot bowl of chili and coffee at Cosmic Cafe (now closed for season) at Mt Wilson half way point . Entire hike on beautiful trails . Beer garden at bottom end of hike at “Adams Packing Station” great way to celebrate accomplishment.

My favorite local trail! Beautiful view and mostly shaded.

monster workout. great views. facilities at the bottom. The description and all trails is incorrect it is closer to 8 Miles not 6.9

This is a nice, moderate hike with decent views and a well maintained trail.
Pros: free street parking, well maintained trail, well marked trail, good workout with the steady incline but also switchbacks, pieces of shade can be found, picnic benches near summit and good views.
Cons: crowded!
-This trail is as Alltrails describes, heavily trafficked. In general, hikers and doggos are friendly and people had good trail etiquette (passing, no trash in sight, no hogging of trail or summit views for tons of photos).
Also, this is a narrow trail. As long as everyone is comfortable with their footing, it's good, but passing can be difficult if you choose a bad spot.

Overall, good, solid hike. Shade is sparse but can be found, trail meanders nicely and you feel accomplished when you finish!

My phone showed 7.1 miles with 1870 feet of elevation gain in 2 hours 5 minutes. Extra distance came from having to park 1/4 mile from the trailhead and doubling back on myself near Dawn Mine. Chatted with a couple near the mine who was also turned around. Noticed another review mentioning signs where you don’t need them and no signs where you do. I’ll second that. Dawn Mine Trail side crisscrosses the creek a number of times. Sunset Trail side simply switchbacks in a hillside.

Worth it. Lots of creek crossings, a few caves, clips, campground. Somewhat maintained Moderat trail

This is a good hike for those who enjoy a little bit of a challenge as a lot of the trail is steep and narrow. The dawn mine itself was quite disappointing as you can’t see anything but steel bars with a small canon out front. The trail is NOT obvious and you need to pay attention if you don’t want to get lost. Signs were available when you didn’t need it and absent when you did. The lot at the trail head is super small, but there is a bigger lot a mile down at Millard Canyon.

I never thought of myself as someone who would climb up and over rocks. For the most part we followed footprints when it was unclear where the trail was. I think we took the hard way a good bit, but we had fun and it is great view all the way to the top. We were not disappointed.

It took me 4hrs including snack time. Being a fast hiker, I am wondering other hikers took them only 2 or 3 hrs. Beautiful scenery from the top area, but sad to see too many majestic trees fell down because of drought. And wonderous to see the stream still survive to flow. Recommend though it is not a easy course. Alltrails app is a lot of help to find right trail direction. Thank Alltrails.

Great trail, little hard to know which way to go up and down the rocks but amazing, fun & gorgeous!

My favorite trail. Find the 9 openings to the dawn mine

Straightforward going up, but a little tricky in the descent. As you go up, keep a sense as to the route you took, as when descending it is possible to lose perspective as to the "best" way down! Such a wonderful hike, though!

Great hike. Moderate to slightly harder than moderate. Beautiful views all the way up the hike. Uphill cutting back and forth all the way up. Really good hike..

Very fun and challenging hike. started around 6:00 am on black friday Mystic to Punk out to Poop out. Didn't see anyone until I was on my way down. I recommend trekking poles and hiking/trail running shoes.

This was my first real day hike. Had to do it twice before summiting. It’s no joke. This hike will test your resolve.

I love this hike, however, today there was a man on a mountain bike with a machete clearing a hiking trail so they can start mountain biking on this single track. Then on another part - where the backbone meets the Murphy Ranch trails there were 5 mountain bikers speeding down the trail and it is clearly marked NO BIKES. Hoping that Park Rangers can get out there and clearly mark that this area is no bikes. Bikes are permitted on the road all the way out to Camp Josepho.
