I went with a group of kids! They kicked butt and I almost gave up:). But here I am, planning to go back! It was beautiful at the top and a couple people in our group went back to run the path... It was quite rocky at points and hiking boots would have been a good idea. Sunny- bring LOTS of water and a hat. Great place to see the neighborhood!

Beautiful hike and great views on top.

I take the shortcut trail going up on the right (west) side, after the housing area and the large water tank. This hike is only about three miles, but is great for getting the legs, heart and lungs pumping because of steep incline.

That’s good one for biking and rent boat at the end of the hiking for $75 all day.

Awesome views for sunset

This was a beautiful trail with great rest stops, pretty decent instructions, and incredible views! Reading the previous posts really helped in being prepared for this hike. It is pretty rocky and I would suggest hiking boots, although I did it in my regular walking shoes and was okay. But it’ll ruin your shoes pretty fast if you do this trail often in them. I also agree that it’s so much better to go earlier rather than the middle of the day because then the sun is so high and more direct and that makes it less enjoyable. For me at least! Make sure to read some of the other posts for some good tips. I also would suggest bringing water. I didn’t think a little over 3 miles one way was going to be that big of a deal, but you it’s a pretty decent incline most of the way, so having some water and maybe a snack bar would be helpful. Hopefully this helps!

Easy flat trail for walking/biking. There is just one tiny part of crossing about a few inches of water on the bike or stepping stones. Gradual small incline and the view was very peaceful. We ran into more bikers than hikers on midday Sunday. Minimal shade during the hot day so bring lots of water.
-we parked near the farmers market (1030am-330pm) and trail head was down the end of the road. There’s other trails from here.
-it is along the highway for a bit but it gets more quiet along the trail the further you go.

This was a great hike. Not too easy, not too hard....just right :-).
A great hike for beginners or intermediate hikers.
This is a great workout hike and could easily be done several times a week.

Nice steep but smooth hike! Great 360 degree view from the top! Started the hike around 0800 and it was perfect out.

this was a fun hike. trail is rocky most of the way. i liked the rest areas spread out through the preserve. very well marked and has way points by the trails. do yourself the favor of getting a map, or snap a pic of it at the start so you can navigate easier.

I thoughts this was a nice hike to go on, relatively easy and great view of olivenhain reservoir and lake Hodges! Definately a hike to do on an overcast day since there isn’t too much shade
I would say it’s a great trail to go on if you don’t know how far you want to hike since it does connect to the greater trail system.

Love this hike for the dog, she can be off of the leash for most of it. Make sure you bring lots of water.

First mile, high elevation gain and tires you out but rest of walk to Lake Hodges overlook is so worth it! Creek is on way in/out of trail next to parking lot. I got a late start at 1030am and was done by 1pm

The creek was beautiful and had more flow than I would have thought for this time of the year. The trail was rocky most of the way up but you just have to pay attention a bit. I couldn’t believe it when I got to the top and I found toilets and a water fountain! Are we spoiled or what—-:-) I’ve never seen that before!

Excellent hike, both vertical and mileage!

Great hike to burn those calories! I started on the main trail from Discovery Lake through the neighborhood above. Steep to start, but there is a paved road to make it easier. Once past the residential area, the trail gets more rough. I took a few off-the-main-trail paths that got very steep and loose towards the top. There are a few cut-through paths that are challenging and feel like you're getting lost, but you always end up at the top. Great 360 view. You can see the ocean on q clear day. Took less than 2 hours round trip at a brisk pace.

Fun trail, I did the Ridgeline trail to double peak. Will definitely be back to explore other routes. Trailer parking is limited, would not suggest a large gooseneck trailer, Trailer parking may be difficult on a popular day. Also, a busy road is nearby and would be scary if a horse got loose. I recommend not taking a green or new horse. I went during the week, in the middle of the day. Footing was decent, a few rocky areas, I was able to trot and canter a little. There are mountain bikers doing single tracks and pop up out of no where, my horse did spook a couple times but the mountain biker did stop and was very respectful of my horse. Overall nice views, nice trails will be back 鸞

Best during overcast weather. Late summer walks can get a bit dusty but scenic.

Definitely enjoyed this hike - good mix of inclines, not too strenuous, very scenic. Tons of different trails so you can make it a longer hike if you want.

Like the other comments showed, the views along this trail aren’t the best. You do travel through a neighborhood but it’s a quiet one. If you’re in the area and looking for a quick afternoon burn, this is a good hike. It’s pretty short but the hills are steep the entire way. In the loop shown by the map, there is some interesting single track worth investigating.

Great hike spot if you’re looking for a quiet place to enjoy some beautiful scenery. You make the hike however long/challenging as you like with the various trails you can pick once you get to the top! Starts with. 1.5mile trek up the mountain, but once you get to the top you have several trails to pick long or short that offer lake views, ocean view, or overlooking all of Escondido’s city. Highly recommend! Grab a map from the resource center in the parking lot for a guide on which trails you want!

Easy hike, good for after work, which is exactly what we did.

It was a fun hike with my wife and our first trail in California. The scenery was beautiful.

Good hike, great views from the summit. Quite a few rabbits, and LOTS of hummingbirds!

PARKING: limited parking in the dirt lot that opens at 8AM so i recommend getting there a little early to claim the prime spot.

THE HIKE: locating the trail head was a bit difficult for me since there were multiple trail heads at the start. choose the right one or you'll end up by the river with no where else to go (whisper: saw a lady doing yoga posses on this very short trail and i awkwardly walked backwards as though i just saw a bear)

Anyway, the hike itself is very well maintained and saw a few rangers making rounds making sure that people are leashing their dogs and making sure poops are in poop bags. I went during the weekday so didn't notice a lot of human traffic (perfect for my introverted self). HOWEVER, the reserve does offer guided hikes and as i was heading back, a swarm of (i kid you not) 20 children were running past me and 1 chaperone absentmindedly staring at her phone.

You'll go through some slight inclines and declines but overall, the hike was bearable. The dam (which i mistook for the lake) is pretty cool but definitely make your way up to the actual overlook for breathtaking views!!! i guarantee you're hiking mind will feel the euphoria of gorgeous scenery. Take your time taking it all in, too! It was nice being the first and only one at the overlook.

I would say this is one of my favorite hikes in the area. Warning though, there's very little shade so either go super early to beat the heat (especially during the summer) or be prepared and slather layers of sunblock. Also be careful for random animal droppings. And bugs.

It's a nice local suburban hike with about a 1000' gain on wide, well-marked trails. It gets better once you get to the top of Stoneridge housing development - at the first water tank - and away from the houses. Nice views once you get high enough. Can be somewhat crowded on weekends, but not too bad. Cool that you can get a climb and a view like this without having to drive too far. Nice spanning coastal views on clear days and usually pleasant breezes to cool you off once you hit the top. Cool to hit Double Peak just around sunset.

Too many houses around during some of the trip.
Saw a coyote though so had a good experience. Moderate difficulty.
