Trail is all downhill which means it is all uphill coming back! Muddy the first mile. Tremendous views at the end! Certainly worth it!

The trail is quite strenuous, but not very difficult or dangerous. Just be careful if you go close to the edges and down the ridge. Well worth it in the end to get the absolutely gorgeous view! One of my best hikes ever!

Fun trail. Ice underneath the snow. Needed cleats. The trail above the bridge was a little dice. Made for a little adventure

This place was totally and completely out of my way, but it was so worth it once I got here. The entire hike is stunning. Very few people hiking here in the winter so it felt like I had the place to myself!

Hiked this 2x. Once back in 2000 and then again in 2016! The view at the end stays with me always. Great exercise too! I am scared of heights and this was the perfect amount of holy shite!

Great day hike trail in the winter. Lots of cute pups along the way and a great payoff at the end. A bit slippery coming back - Would rec bringing spikes, yak trax, poles or snow shoes if you have them. Still doable if you don’t!

Went on a Saturday in mid January with group of 3 reasonably athletic people in their late 20s. Arrived at 0800 which was the perfect time to beat the crowds and get some beautiful shots with the sun in different positions. If you're fairly surefooted you should definitely venture past the warning signs on the end, the views are even more spectacular out there.

Great hike in Kauai for the amazing vista at the end. Interesting hike in closed in forest until then. PLEASE pick up your toilet paper when you pee in the outdoors. It doesn’t take that much effort. So discouraging to see tp all along the trail!!

This hike is spectacular! As middle-aged, active people, this hike wasn’t ‘difficult ‘ ; however, we went on a dry day. If it is raining or has recently rained, it can be challenging. We went past the railing at the end of the trail; had it been wet, we wouldn’t risk it. We’re constantly overcoming our fear of heights, so venturing down to the plateau was a big step. There is an even more precarious end and I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GOING OUT THERE! The view of the valley, the coastline, the ocean will be imprinted in your minds and hearts forever. Casually walking and an hour stop at the end made our trip total, 4.5 hours.

Unexciting path leading to stunning vista!

Nothing short of amazing. I have done this hike four times this year but the winter brings a whole new beauty to this hike. Waterfall is mostly frozen. Beautiful take your camera.

Such an awesome hike. Did it in two days one night, but spreading it out over another night would have been nice. Started in a Thursday morning and was back Friday evening. Saw other people out but we’re alone on the peak for most of the time we were up there. Starts out forested then opens into valleys with awesome views of the surrounding mountains, then over the pass and up to an epic peak.

Great trail, some hard slippery mud makes going down harder than going back up. Took us about 3 hours, not including time spent at the vistas at the bottom. Shaded and forested the entire way, no great views until you get to the end, but when you do they are spectacular. Really cool exposed ridge line at the end to get great photos and your heart pumping. GF wore chacos and got some blisters, so maybe wear shoes or boots to tie down your feet with some of the slipping.

Leave early in the morning to get the best views, avoid clouds, and avoid crowds. We were first on the trail and it was well worth it.

On weekends hunters are in the area. A sign recommends wearing bright clothing but we didn’t get hunted so maybe not a big deal.

One of my favorite trails I’ve ever hiked!! Love the river that’s right next to you and the scenery is amazing!! Definitely a must do!!

A relatively unassuming first few miles gives way to a truly spectacular and one of a kind view on the spine. This is about as dramatic a trail as any out there in the last half mile. I’d compare it to Angels Landing in Zion, without a hundred other people jockeying for position (we saw 3-4 people in 3 hours out on the trail). Your legs will be cursing you on the way back up, but your mind will still be busy thinking about the view you just witnessed, so it won’t matter. It can get VERY muddy, so be prepared with good hiking boots, and if you enjoy your cartilage, poles. Would have loved to take the Nualolo Cliff Trail on the way back, as I think that would have enhanced the hike as a whole, but unfortunately we did this hike while that trail was still closed in 2016. Would definitely do this trail again, if only for the chance to sit on the edge of the world for 20 more minutes!

Officially a Must Do hike!!! The views at the end are unreal, so MAKE SURE you go on a clear day. There isn't much to look at on the way so the payoff at the end is vital. Go as far as you're comfortable going down the ridge at the end, the views get better and better (Obligatory "Be careful", don't die). Solid cardio on the way back up for sure (2 hrs constantly going uphill), but the hike itself wasn't too difficult.

Great out and back hike. If you’re looking for something with views the whole way, this one isn’t it, but if you’re good hiking in some tree cover until the end, the views are 100% worth it. Views get even better if you get out onto the ridge cliffs. Could see how it would be difficult when it has recently rained, but with good conditions we did out and back in about 2 hours 15, not including the photo taking at the cliffs.

Amazing hike. Slippery in some spots so wear appropriate hiking shoes. Great workout, little more then 10k and worth every step. View at the end is incredible. Enjoy!

Great hike, but do yourself a favor and do the loop along with Nu'alolo . To be done on a clear day for the best view

Great trail and worth the payoff at the end. Way down was a solid downhill jaunt and was a bit muddy and wet (typical for this area and not difficult with the appropriate footwear). Way back was more challenging cardio-wise but easier to navigate the mud and roots. We were able to complete the trail in just under 4 hours. We started the hike and 10am and would not recommend starting after 2pm due to changing trail conditions and darkness (sun sets around 6).

I first hiked this canyon in 1999 and plan on returning in 2019 to do it again. Can’t wait.

I hiked this trial while taking a break from a road trip with my dog and it was absolutely perfect! Such an easy hike which is great because I just wanted to take a quick hike and get back on the road. It was perfect for my dog and the views were incredible. I’m also a photographer and I always try to find easy trails during my road trips with great views to photograph, and this one did not disappoint! I didn’t go all the way because I heard there was a hole in the wall climb that my dog couldn’t take, but we were on the trail in total for an hour and 10 mins.

Make sure you bring cash for parking ($5) and appropriate shoes because it’s definitely a dirty hike!

It has amazing views. Never should miss it.

I would like to start with the road to the trailhead. This road is grated and managed. Please don’t stress out. It’s rough in spots but drivable in most vehicles. Start early. There are also trail markers but the provided “map” from the BLM is not near as good as downloading the Alltrails map. If you feel lost, follow the footprints. There were way too many people here today and I only saw one other permit tag. I’m thinking people are taking advantage of the government shutdown. Absolutely one of the best adventures my family has done.

4hours took. It was hard for us especially for husband age 62. But at the end of trail, it was amazing blue sky and ocean!

This is one of the best ridge trails on the island. If you could only do one between Nuololo, Awaawapui, Honopu, and Kalepa I’d suggest Awaawapuhi. It is a long enough trail to give you good feel of ridge hiking and a nice feeling of accomplishment, but is not terribly difficult. The views are amazing as with all the trails in this area. This is a must do hike.

MUD. The trail would not be very difficult if it weren't for the mud. Seriously be prepared. Take a walking stick (there are tons near the start from previous hikers) and then watch your footing! It could just be the time of year (winter), but this part of the island does get a huge amount of rain year round, so worth thinking about. Once you get past all the mud though, the view is pretty spectacular. It opens up into a massive valley where you're perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Stay for a few minutes and you'll see some helicopter tours come by, as well as a boat tour down below. Worth the trek in!

Difficult this time of yr. and slick in many parts of the trail. Views of the Na Pali coast are breathtaking!! Hike out is a bear if ur not in descent shape. Recommended by a brother in Christ at the Lihue church of Christ when we worshiped there on vacation.
