Hiked this trail on 11/10. Like the other two posts mentioned the trail is significantly covered in ice and snow with a decent amount of foot traffic. Be prepared to slide and have a few good wipeouts. The views along the trail are spectacular and I’m looking forward to going back again in the spring, summer and/or fall when the aspen leaves are changing. And yes the 30min drive on the dirt road is pretty rough, but if my Sentra can do it then all other vehicles can also.

Hiked this trail 11/10/18. The 9 mile road, like others mentioned, is pretty rough but it was well worth the hike! There’s plenty of great viewing spots on the way to the lookout station. The only thing I’d note is that it was pretty icy when I went. Many people (myself included) were sliding and took some bad falls. However, if you’re prepared for the icy conditions it’s well worth the drive for the 360 views of mountains.

Some of the best views from any trail in Colorado. Before I got to the trail head I had a bear run across Rampart Range Road in front of me, he was a light brown color. Hiked on 9 Nov 18, started about 0900, temp was 27 degrees at the trail head. Trail is almost totally covered in snow and ice, wear crampons or micro spikes so you don't fall. The stairs to the top are mostly snow/ice covered, best hang on tightly on the way up and down.

Loved this trail! Started at the fern lake trailhead, hiked to the pool and made the climb. Very snow covered and a few icy spots. But incredible views at the top prior to getting to the lake. We had the trail to ourselves. So diverse in what you see. It’s a must hike for RMNP!!

Visiting Boulder from New Jersey, and a few hours after landing my friends and I did this trail. Absolutely stunning scenery. Easy enough considering we are not used to the altitude. We decided to go farther and do the Chapman Dr trail which loops back into the same parking lot that we started for tenderfoot! Nice little hike with beautiful views, I would love to do it again!

Ugh, I am waffling between 3 and 4 stars. I would give 3.5 if I could. Here are the details...

PROS: Clean, great pathways (although gets narrow on way back), TONS of bathrooms (yes!) pit toilets, so they are open, pretty quiet, even though you do walk near a road, long distance.

CONS: Some parts of the path were NOT marked well...you must go down a path and see if you are right and find another sign. OR just look on the all trails app (you will still have signal, which is nice)
The path is sort of boring (at least in November, not sure about spring/summer!) and the best part was ascending up the hill to see Red Rocks and the Denver skyline.
THE START OF THE PATH WAS NOT CLEAR! You park and go across the street to the start of the path, not directly where you park! We thought we were right and we were not starting right...ugh, had to start a few times.
$10 entrance fee (although, apparently there are ways around it)

PRO/CON: No shade (depends on time of year!! Could be pro OR con!)

SUMMARY: All in all, a "good" hike, but not one I will do again, especially with the $10 entrance fee!
If you live in the area and have a yearly pass, this would be great for you. This is fairly flat, with just a few incline spots.

We did this loop last Saturday. It was beautiful and very quiet. Didn’t see many other hikers until the last 1/2 mile. Not too much snow or ice. We didn't need the spikes or poles we had along.

great hike. took the kids 3&5. I would say this is a moderate hike only if you are doing the final climb to see the cave entrance.

Great hike! 'Moderate' rating is appropriate. Signs and trails can make it a little confusing at the beginning, so following the mesa trail signs not the ncar trail signs. It's a pretty steep hike in general. 2.4 miles OUT and 2.4 miles BACK. Last 100' was too steep for our group of 2nd graders. Beautiful views amongst the flatirons. Still worth going even though we could see the cave at the top.

Good, easy hike - little surprised to see it was moderate. Nice views! Only negative was a good chunk of the drive up was unpaved, and it had rain/snowed so an unanticipated muddy car.

This hike was amazing. The first half was very smooth and simple, then it turns pretty rocky for the last mile or so. The very last bit was absolutely the best part though. I saw other people posting that the last 100 feet or so was a climb, so I was expecting something along the lines of boulder hopping. Boy was i wrong! It was a legitimate climb! I would say it was about a 60ish degree angle, which was exactly what i was hoping for! Most of the trail is great for most dogs, and older kids too! I will 100% be going back!

Great for going on a walk or run! Has views of downtown and the mountains.

hiked this trail in July. it's a steep hike with lots of hikers on the trail but the scenery was magnificent with an incredible little alpine lake waiting at the top. start early so you can summit the peak and really get to see everything. I can only imagine how amazing the view must be from the summit. but if you only make it to Cathedral Lake, like myself, it's still very much worth the hike. people on the trail or super friendly as well. highly recommended hike!

Did the out and back versus the loop version of this trail, but ended up at the same lake. Nice hike, not too challenging despite the elevation gain. As many others have said, lots of dead trees along the way.

One of the most beautiful trails I’ve ever been on.

My husband and I (mid 60s) hiked this trail yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. A variety of scenery--meadow, forest, beautiful lake and mountain views. The ascent to Cub Lake took a little effort but was very doable for us. We didn't see moose but lots of Chipmunks were out and about. We found a spot out of the wind to eat lunch while we enjoyed the view of Cub Lake. Would highly recommend this hike. Took us about 5 hours including a lunch stop to complete hike.

I want on this hike on October 12th. It was definitely the end of prime hiking season. I’m glad I went with someone that was knowledgeable about the trail because the snow and wind made the trail disappear. But I was a beautiful hike. Not super challenging but beautiful views. If you hike this this time of year, prepare for all types of weather.

Great trail! The last 100ft up to the cave is a pretty steep climb up rocks... not very kid or dog friendly, but the trail leading up to that point is great. Definitely recommend boots.

Absolutely loved this hike!

Hiked mid-October 2018 — Beautiful!! Had the trail to ourselves, but it was well traveled enough that we could follow the footprints in the snow. You need a high clearance, 4WD vehicle to get to the trail head. One of the Honda Civics in our party didn’t make it all the way to the trailhead. Definitely recommend gaitors and spikes too. No fee for parking.

Easy hike with incredible views. dog friendly and not busy. The 9 miles of dirt road are a little rough, but we managed in our Honda Civic.

Awesome trail. Moderately difficult with beautiful views and nature. Hiked 10/26/18 and the trail was good. Some snow but compressed. Absolutely need spikes due to ice. Did it with a four month old baby strapped to chest. A little dodgy at parts, especially ice near the end, but on a 55 degree day it was perfect.

Easy, family friendly...best views I’ve seen yet!

Beautiful vista from up top. Definitely worth the rocky climb.

Loved it! Soooo beautiful!! View was breathtaking!

Great hike. Breathtaking views from the top. Worth the climb up to the tower at the end of the hike.

I loved this trail! We hiked it in late September and it was gorgeous. The second lake is magnificent - a beautiful blue and rimmed with rocks. We didn’t make it to the third lake but I will next time.

Took the dogs and kids. Amazing drive up, beautiful views. It’s a must.
