Warning!! Not a good loop! Once you hit the ski runs turn around and take the same trail back to your car. We ended up walking down a steep downhill dusty road and then back along the main road through town. Would not recommend.

Go super early to beat the heat and parking! Bring a decent amount of water to stay hydrated on your way up!

Easy and enjoyable trail along the lake. Parked at the Marina and took the walk around the lake as I waited for sunset. Small stream at the back of the lake where you take a boardwalk over it. I started on the right of the Marina and went counter clockwise. Be sure to stop and look back every now and again because the views really look differently from a different angle.

Windy and cooler up at the top, great photo op

Nice easy walk around the lake. We didn't run into too many people. It was nice and peaceful.

We just finished the trail and just about completed the whole loop. The track down from ski lift wasn’t great but offered some more great views from a different angle. We finished with a very short stretch of road as wanted to go back via shop! Following gps was good advice

Hard uphill for first 30 min. Gorgeous trail that comes out to June Lake mid ski lodge. Wanted to do loop so put on GPS. Easy to follow map. Goes down road. Would recommend in and out hike for the beauty.

Ugh...HATED this hike.

We went on a weekday morning in early September and came across SIXTEEN PEOPLE in the first .2 miles, and turned around and left and hiked Fern Lake instead. This trail was BUSY. AllTrails rates it as the #1 hike in the Inyo Forest, and it seems the word is out. SO MANY PEOPLE on the trail. I guess some folks like hiking in huge crowds. We hike to ESCAPE the crowds, and this was the Times Square on NYE equivalent of Mammoth Mountain lake hikes, so be forewarned!

My husband and are in our 70’s and we hiked it with a little effort. Very beautiful lake! Would go again in a minute!

Very good hike to prepare you for any hard hikes you have planned!!
I’ve used it to prepare me for Half Dome and Sedona.
I enjoy the hike at least once a week in the Horse Heaven Trail, it is less congested with people.

Too crowded

Accept it as your first challenge

beautiful walk around Convict Lake...the altitude makes it a bit harder to do but take your time and enjoy the spectacular scenery and you'll not regret choosing this trail...

A bit steep at times, but nothing we sea level people could not handle. The lake is clear and worth the effort!

Dog friendly and awesome views.

Did it yesterday. When we arrived June Lake, we did not have much time left for the day so decided to do this one, instead of the originally planned Fern Lake Trail. We followed the reviewers' advice and turned around when we hit the ski lift area (1.2 mile). The view overlooking the June Lake and Gull Lake was very nice. The trail itself was not difficult, and we're pretty fit and fast hikers in general, but the first uphill was a little drag for us than usual, since we were just getting out of the car after sitting for 6 hours till right before, and we were from the very sea level (a few blocks away from the Bay), so felt the altitude difference. We left the trail head at 5:40 pm, reached the turnaround point (ski area) at 6:50 pm, and got back down to the trail head at 7:35.pm, exactly as we planned since the sunset time was around 7:30 pm. Very nice sunset mood. No single hikers on the trail.

It is a great place for trail running, could be crowded mornings and evenings

The initial uphill was tough but rewarding when you get to the top. I agree with a previous reviewer that you should treat this as an out and back - when you hit the sky fields turn back.

The trail is not marked down through the chalet and down the road, it wasn’t very scenic going down the dirt road and the offshoot trail hasn’t been maintained in a long time - we only managed with GPS and then you’re on the shoulder of the road.

This trail is best early in the morning so that shadows are cast between the inner and outer rings of the crater. You also get better visibility for Mono Lake. This is a fast, beautiful hike you should try to fit into any Mono Lake trip.

Great short day hike with lots of awesome views! Dog friendly too.

Did this trail couple weeks ago and I loved it. very easy and just gorgeous views. The water is just so clear.

This was really hard. The views of the bay were pretty cool, but the views while hiking were kind of dull. Just a lot of dry grass and cows. The trail is well maintained. Watch out for cow dung and bees!

Great hike, good views.. would be better if it for the smoke :-(

Easy hike with kids even for a fat guy like myself. We enjoyed exploring around the lake, meeting a bunch of friendly dogs, and quick hellos to other families.

typical fire road trail hike. quite steep and little to no shade.
