This would have been 4 stars if the cave was more spectacular or the trail had been less rocky and better marked.
I followed the path of least resistance without looking at my GPS coming down, and ended up taking a detour through the desert to get back to the trail.

Trail gets pretty crowded on cool weekends. But it is a beautiful easy/moderate hike with a great view at the top. If you time it correctly (top of the hour from 9am to 9pm) you can see the fountain from Fountain Hills when you look north from the cave. Next to no shade on the trail during the day but nice and cool at the top.

I do this trail every morning before work, its perfect for beginner hikers or trail runners with easy to follow paths and lots of fun hills. Not a lot of clear signs where trails cross, so definitely check the map before your first time out. Great city views.

More of a mountain bike than a hike trail. For hiking it’s pretty easy and very exposed. Not a tad of shade, so better for the winter months. Be aware of bikers.

Nice hike, lots of wildlife, lots of dog poo right in the middle of the trail. Poorly marked at times, we definitely got ‘lost’ once. Saw a total of 8 other people. Would recommend and will be back for sure!

Fun discovery this morning!

Did Holbert-National-Kiwanis today. I had done that trail before, but not in a few years. As many hikers know, Holbert is a little bit tough going up. Most times on Holbert, I have stopped at the lookout that is up about 1 mile. Today, I knew I had to reach End of Trail on Holbert, and then continue to National and Kiwanis. It was harder than I remembered! I actually fell off trail on Holbert while traipsing through the desert east of Dobbins Lookout and had to bushwhack up to the summit road, turn left and then hike up the road to the continuation of Holbert and then the link to National West. National is beautiful right there, sweeping within just a couple hundred feet of the radio towers that are visible from all over Phoenix. Kiwanis is essentially all downhill from right there, bringing an easy end to the difficult hike. Cactus flowers were out today! Fun stuff.

Fantastic hike through the preserve. Bell Pass and East End are definitely on the steep side with most of the elevation on the hike coming in about 3 miles of trail. I clocked 12.5 miles 3018 AEG with side trip to Tom's Thumb.

**Read this if you want to take your dog...**
I hiked this amazing trail two weeks ago with my 50 lb 8 year old trail seasoned blue weimaraner who hikes mountain trails 4-7 times a week. The trail was fine, easy even, until we had to climb over the large boulder. We did it but there is a ledge about a foot wide on the other side of the boulder with a 20 foot drop below. My dog was not a fan! Two of us handled her by harness to get her over and pass her down. (I was told by a friend you can go around that boulder-Just like you can go around the 12ft wall on Flat Iron) After this point the trail increases significantly in vertical climb up to the peak. Up is never the issue-as you know down is harder. We got about 3/4 of the way on this part of the trail to the top of the peak before we tapped out! We probably could have climbed it, but the decent would have been dangerous and irresponsible for both me and my dog to attempt together. This dog has hiked Flat Iron in the Sups, Humphreys and hikes Black Mountain in Cave Creek 3-6 times a week-all labeled as difficult hikes. Take your dog if you don't mind NOT climbing to the peak. The entire hike round trip took 2 hours for very seasoned hikers with stops. I would recommend bringing gloves.
We will return this weekend without my dog.

***Road driving caution. I drive a Jeep Trailhawk -I drove this 18 mile forest road fast and rough. It was a lot of fun but it loosened 2 heat shields and broke 3 motor mounts--I can't entirely blame the road for the motor mounts, they may have been close to needing to be replaced. But drive fast and fun knowing the risks...

this is easy and takes about 3 hours tops. Good for kids and pets. Pretty busy and cost is now 9 bucks

thumbs up

Great challenge and view.

This is a great short hike. The rocky path keeps you on your toes with foot placement but never are you just climbing on just rocks.yhe view at the end is wonderful. I recommend starting by at least 8am for best conditions.

Great trail and amazing views

A great sub-hour run for those good on rocky terrain looking for a short trip outside and feeling fit. Otherwise a pleasant use of part of the day with some scrambling to keep up the Interest. The top views are amazing.

A great way to get up high quickly. The trail is pretty easy going, but currently suffers from an abundance of icy snow making things slippy!

Great hills for a flatlander from Houston. I combined the JC and RL with an out and back section of the Mormon trail to get in a 6.5 mile run. I did get turned around a little because I’m new to using the app and the trail markings are weathered in some locations but it’s not like it’s so remote it was a problem. Great views of Phoenix at dawn. The elevation training was good, just enough climb to challenge me but not overwhelm. I don’t get many opportunities to run hills on the gulf coast so this was a welcomed change. I would definitely run the South Mt. Preserve again on future visits.

The hike is well worth the views. Wear appropriate footwear and gloves would be a bonus. Bring lots of water!

Hard hike, but worth it!!

Great hike in the morning with a dog before the heat sets in. Bring plenty of water, there are a lot of side trail options to extend the hike. ** Stopped when we saw a puppy and an owner with no water-- HYDRATE YOUR PUPS! I brought a full gallon for myself and one dog, just to be safe. The heat was already setting in at 8:30 am! **

Very fun but difficult trail, steep with lots of scrambling. Great 360-degree view of the valley from the top.

This is a great trail! Be prepared for a lot of people and some steep inclines.

Far away from me, but great hike. Up to you how difficult you wanna make it. Wanna go fast?? Pretty easy first half way up, then you start noticing how difficult the elevation makes it. Take your time the first time up to get an idea how goes.

Challenging and fun trail. There were many others on the trail, all enjoyed the mountain.

Great Sunday morning hike. Great 360 degree views. Started out around 9:30am and finished up around noon. Would recommend an earlier start from now through the hot months as it was approaching 85 when we finished up. There is no shade on the trail. Bring plenty of water & sunscreen. Wear hiking footwear as it’s very rocky on the trail, especially, the first half. Great hike!!

Great hike get there early

Amazing hike with challenging points throughout. We went early in the morning (5:45am) and it wasn’t too crowded. Quick a few sections needed hands to climb up but the climb to the summit was beautiful! Took about 45 mins to get to the top doing a relaxed pace about 4.5 mile return in total.
