Beautiful hike! The colors were so pretty with a few aspens interspersed in the ponderosa. Keep your eyes out for the sign down to Maxwell falls off the trail - it can be easy to miss depending on which way you come up. You have to walk ~100m upstream to see the main falls. Also, please pick up your dog poop bags! We saw at least 6 bags at the trailside.

Beautiful little trail, moderate until the little bit of scrambling at the end. The lakes are lovely. And it was not crowded at all, only saw one group of 4 backpackers and a couple the entire day.

This was my second time doing this hike and it was better than the first! Although the views leading up to the lakes are not amazing, once you get within a mile of the first lake, things really open up and make everything worth it. After the reservoir, the elevation gain really kicks in. The first mile of the trail is down hill so dont forget that you have a short hike back up to your car(up hill both ways!). The first Chicago lake has no defined trail but there are plenty of paths to get down there. The yellows, greens, and blues really make this lake stand out. The hike to the upper lake is all gain. There are a few spots of loose dirt which make it slow going but the climb is about 500ft in less than a mile to the top lake. Once you're up there, it all pays off. We had an amazing blue sky day with some gusts of wind rolling through to cool us off. Mount Evans sits behind the lake and offers amazing mountain views and a great place to relax. With the side routes to the lower lake and walking around, the total trip was roughly 11 miles but the trail itself is about 9 miles as it is listed here.

Completed this hike on Saturday 9/22. This may be one of the most beautiful hikes I have done. Not too bad of an elevation gain but certainly not easy at some points. Luckily, it was the perfect blue sky day with a little wind at the top to cool us off when we reached to top. The views at the lake are incredible and we could have spent all day there if we did not have somewhere else to be. Take a walk around the entire lake to gain a different perspective of just how amazing it is.
The parking lot was oddly packed, as in full at this trail head and almost all the road parking taken for lost lake around 630am. A lot of people were backpacking on this trail and also splitting off to diamond lake. I think as long as the weather stays good and the road open, plan on either starting early or do something later in the day.

Lovely trail close to Denver. Great open valleys and a pretty lake at the top. Took me about 3 hours roundtrip and I am a moderate(ish) hiker. Left before sunrise and the trail was empty. Was the first to the top and had the entire lake to myself and my dog. Dog loved running around at the top by the lake. Solid workout but not too hard at all

I love this trail!!!!

Not to be missed! Spectacular hike, especially in the fall.

I would highly recommend this trail, loved it. Amazing views from summit. It is a bit of a slog thru lodgepole pines initially and I started to wonder how it would be but after about 20 min. it opens up to lovely views. I would recommend taking trail on right to summit, past gate. It is a bit of a climb but wait till you see the views, what a reward. I had a hard time leaving the summit. So beautiful!

Beautiful hike!

Not much scenery as it’s in a valley. Barely any changing of the leaves so not recommend right now if that’s your goal. Lots of uphill and rocky. Great cardio. Never made it to the falls. Heavily trafficked...

It is beautiful and fun. It takes awhile to get to the falls so be prepared to hike! It’s also very much in the forest and you don’t see mountains or the sky a whole bunch.

Beautiful and a perfect distance. Amazing views

Beautiful, fairly easy trail.

Great hike and decent workout. The 3/4 mile and the last 3/4 is steep. Took me about 3:45 round trip with about 30 min up top. Beautiful views. I got there at 9:15 and honestly wish I got there a littler earlier because it did get crowded. But it was also a Saturday.

Great trail. Got there at 7am on a Saturday and there were only a few cars in the parking lot. Took us 2 hours to get up to the top taking breaks occasionally. Trail is easy to follow and a good moderate hike. It’s fairly steep at the beginning and the end but worth the few. Once we headed back down it was very busy with a lot of people. I’d recommend you go early in the morning to avoid the crowds!

Close to the city. Short distance.

Easily one of my top hikes, if not the #1 hike in Colorado. Set off to just do 4 miles to the Fourth of July Mine and just couldn't stop. It's incredible how many photos I took because every time you turned a corner it got more and more beautiful - especially with those aspens showing off right now! Once I got to Lake Dorothy it was nearly 5pm and I wished that I had more time to explore. I will 100% be back. WOW!

Easy trail with quick climb at the beginning.

I hiked up to the lake and found a few geocaches. A good portion of the trail is in the woods, getting above the tree line towards the end. Didn’t see too many people on a weekday morning but it’s clear this is a popular trail. I enjoyed eating my lunch with the lake to myself, watching the birds. I was out for 4h and travelled 7.7 miles.

Great Trail winding up and down along the creek with cool waterfall. It's easy to lose the trail when you have to cross the creek. The yellow marker is easy to see after you cross the creek.

beautiful trail. i came accross a mother dear and her fawn, heard the mice/critters in the bushes most of the way up and even heard elk in the distance at the top. wonderful trail. this park really enforces the leave no trace guidelines and it shows.
also, the signs say it is strenuous, but if you are comfortable with hiking its fine, if you hike often its a breeze. i didn't see any snakes.

amazing views of the flatlands and mountains. gorgeous hike for so close to Denver. loved the history!

Nice views with the leaves changing colors. The last 1/4 mile had some tough steep hills. Certainly got the heart pounding.

Awesome trail. Did it over Labor Day and still was quite empty. Could easily be considered hard due to length and elevation gain, but its all worth it for the variety of scenery. Although I saw a few 2wd sedans along the road to the trailhead, 4wd or at least something with clearance is recommended to get there.

Beautiful views but the entire time we were hiking we heard very loud gunshots from the adjoining private property which ruined any chance of a peaceful hike.

Three stars because this trail is way too packed. You'll need to get to the trailhead between 6-8am although people tend to park on the side of the road. This is a moderate trail in the true sense. The beginning is mostly an incline and there are a series of ups and downs. You can wander a bit off the trail on certain parts for some amazing view points of the mountains. The flow and intensity of the fall will depend on the time of year you do it. Enjoy folks!

Beautiful hike through dense, lush forest. The lakes are a lovely ending. The hike was enough to get the blood flowing, but certainly not strenuous.
