on Kuliouou Ridge Trail

hiking

Pretty ridge hike with amazing vegetation changes. The trail is marked in places where the footpath is unclear by ties on trees or paint. The trail is easy-moderate until you pass the grove of pines and picnic tables. Avoid this hike if it rained-- descending some parts would be dangerous and undoable if slick with mud. Otherwise, this is a safe hike with no treacherous points.

The best part of the hike is the last leg, where the green vegetation, blue sky, and red dirt take on high contrast, psychedelic colors. You'll catch views before and behind you once you reach the top. We completed this hike in about 2.5-3 hours. No crowd on weekdays. Overall a beautiful and rewarding hike.

Great trail! Some stone ruins at the bottom and good views along the way—once you get out of the valley. The first time I did this I got eaten alive by mosquitoes even though the stream bed looked dry. The valley stretch is quite long so that was pretty miserable. Second time I did it there were no bugs so ymmv but bring something to keep from getting bit!

Got rained out just before the peak. It was very overgrown at parts with tons of ferns. Pretty standard ridge trail, just longer than average.

Hard, but worth every bit of sweat!

Nice trail that can be connected to other trails to make it a loop.

Hiked January 2019,
This was a great trail. It started off a little sketchy just because you have to enter the trail in the back of government property complete with construction workers and warning signs telling you not to enter. There are probably a number of ways to reach the top, but I’m sure if you follow the actual river coming from the water fall you won’t miss it.
It’s pretty dog friendly and off of the beaten path so it makes good for a cool evening stroll.

Nice afternoon hike. I wouldn't rate it hard, rather moderate. The view from the top was great!

I would say this is tougher than the rating but only due to the fact I carried about 30+ extra pounds on my back (baby+carrier). The “waterfall” wasn’t anything really worth the trip today but the view overall is amazing. The hike was up and down challenging and was a good workout overall. I’m sure there’s more of a waterfall when there’s more rain but not on a day like today.

It is a great hike that gives you an amazing view of Waimānalo and if you look back you can see town. Bring water because it can get hot if it is a sunny day. When you get close to the top there isn’t as much shade also.

worth it! not anyone there with us when we got there. mostly up hill but super easy

Well that was fun! I hiked it with my parents (50s) me (30yo). It’s officially their first Hawaii hike in the books! It was both challenging but doable. It’s definitely muddy, I don’t know why we even bothered trying to avoid the mud on the first half of the hike... getting covered is pretty inevitable, haha. We did go on a cloudy day though. So we didn’t get to see that incredible 360° view from the top, it was just misty. But it was very green and lush and had incredible views on the way up!! This one was a great one!

I took my 10, 9, and 5-year olds on this hike and they managed better than I did! It has some great views during the first half, and then gets quite steep as you descend to the pools. Lots of folks were jumping off and doing pull-ups on the ropes that cross the water - it was fun to watch. It was very dry the day we hiked, which meant that the steep parts (hard-packed dirt) were extremely slick. We fell on our butts a few times, just due to skidding out. I will say I saw a few people hiking barefoot, or with Crocs - would not recommend that. It took us almost three hours RT, but that was with some snack breaks, and lots of time at the bottom of the trail to watch the jumpers. It was fairly busy on a Saturday, but not obnoxious -- and definitely not as crowded as Manoa falls. Don't be tricked by the first 0.8 miles -- really easy and fun. Then it gets quite steep... Definitely try it wth kiddos - they will like it a lot (if you continue tossing in the breaks for granola bars and fruit snacks!).

such a great hike! took my boyfriend and I about 3.5 hours, with time to relax at the top. recommend wearing good hikers for grip as it can get slippery with the rain. when we got to the top it was too cloudy to see the view but the whole way up and down the view is amazing.

100% worth it! This was a great hike but definitely should be noted on the more difficult end of moderate, just for the fact that it gets pretty steep towards the top and the down portion is a bit difficult.

The view was gorgeous and making it to the top was an amazing feeling after the steps towards the top.

The loop should be done if (1) you’re an advanced hiker (2) you have decent navigation skills outdoors (3) you’re up for an adventure, a solid workout, and getting a little dirty.

If not, you can do the trail starting clockwise (go left) out and back for a good workout and amazing views. The trail is quite safe on this part. Even easier, start at Hawaii Loa which starts much higher up the ridge.

I did not find this hike as dangerous as some people are saying. I even did it clockwise. If you’ve explored ridge hikes here, it’s nothing too intense.

Caution: It’s easy to get lost on this trail. Pretty overgrown and the dense forest can make it difficult to navigate the trail.

Tips and Stats: (1) The trail splits into the two directions at a dirt opening just after the tall grass and the forest section (2) AllTrails app marked my hike as ~7.6 mi (3) 4.5 hour trip for an advanced hiker going at a relaxed pace with lots of stops for pictures and snacks

Great hike but very muddy- wear shoes you don’t care about! Like most ridge hikes on Oahu it was clouded over at the top, but beautiful views on the way up. If you don’t feel comfortable climbing the top part with the ropes your views and hike won’t be compromised.

It says moderate but I say more like hard. Then again I was carrying my 37lb toddler in a backpack. Very very very steep!!!! Some areas seem to have thin walking paths but should be good. Definitely bring some water and snacks. At the fork go left, much shorter path to the pools

fun and dog friendly.

This hike is definitely worth it if you are in shape to do it. The first .8 miles of the hike are fine - probably deserve an easy rating. The last .6 kick your butt. Steep declines on the way to the falls. I did the hike when dry and it was still challenging. Bring good hiking shoes and a second pair for the water. Small sections of rock scrambling. Well marked trail and lots of trees to hold on to for stability.

Far fewer people here than at Manoa, but you still won't be alone. I probably saw 20-30 people total. There were about ten people at the falls when I was there.

Trailhead is in a Hawaii neighborhood. Park on the street.

Bring lots of water, there is none. Fun hike that is pretty much uphill the entire time. Great views of the island in all directions when you reach the top. Mostly shaded with a few sunny spots. It was dry when we did it but I imagine it would be difficult if the trail was wet.

Make sure you do this hike on a clear day!!! For one, I'm told the views are fantastic, I'm super bummed that I spent the whole time in a dense fog. Two, we did it in heavy rain and mud and it was fairly stressful, and I consider myself a pretty able-bodied, experienced hiker. It was a lot of fun, but for inexperienced hikers this could be tough, especially in poor weather. Definitely recommend this trail!

Excellent ridge hike - I did this hike alone in October. It took about 4 hours up and back. It was a little muddy, but nothing I really felt unsafe with.
It felt like the summit was really fair away, especially once I was on the trail. Unfortunately the views from the summit were lost to the clouds for me, but the views along the ridge were still well worth it.

Overall a great morning hike!

*Before I begin, I lost a GoPro Hero Session 5 in the first waterfall portion in the pool, so if anyone does happen to find it, please contact me, it has some nice memories on it, thanks.* A very nice hike, isn't bad at all. However, it's a very dangerous hike if you go on a day after it just rain, it can get really muddy and slippery. So I recommend sunny days only. It has two waterfalls from the points I got to, both have a pool, but one is safe enough to jump from a cliff to the pool, whereas the other has a real nice view. A heads up, the way back could be tiring for some and a lot of going up, so prepare your legs for that.

Great view for a moderately difficult hike. I’m sure it would be hard if it were wet. There were some patches I’m sure I’d slip on and make a mess of myself.

The views for this hike were amazing. It’s mostly covered and really feels like a walk in the woods! I would rate this extremely moderate to borderline difficult. It was dry when we went so I’m sure it’s worse when it’s muddy and wet. It’s all incline to the top and definitely gets the heart going. And those stairs!! lol Trail can be narrow in places with steep drop offs. I think as long as your careful this is a must do in Oahu. It took us about 2. 1/2 hours to complete but we didn’t really hang out at the top.

Short, easy, with a lot of mosquitoes and homeless people.
Will not go again.

Gorgeous view of the Windward side.
I would say this hike is comparable in difficulty to Kuliouou and Hawaii Loa ridge trails, not sure why it’s rated Moderate other than it is a bit shorter.
But great workout and awesome views the whole way. Favorite hike!

If you are inexperienced this will be very challenging but doable. There are parts that are very steep and are incredibly challenging but so very much worth the work to get to the top. Once you see the view from the top it is worth all the sweat and hard work! This is definitely one of the best trails on the Island!
