loved it!

There is something to be said for going on this hike in the winter....there are no leaves...you can see the falls on the entire hike. It was beautiful ...we are new to hiking...but we went to the top...no problem....would definitely do this again. trying spring next time!

My fiancé, my dog (cocker spaniel), and I did this hike after seeing some local photos (we live in Roanoke). Great hike, moderate difficulty, with some truly amazing views. The hike took a little over 2 hours round trip with taking a 15-20 minute break at the top to look at the amazing views. The trail was snowy when we went which made it a bit harder, but overall very enjoyable and would recommend to others and hike again sometime.

spet and oct 2017 i did a ton of trails from this site with in WV, VA, TN, GA, NC & SC. i don't to 10 20 mile trails i like doing short trail up to 8 miles. i look for rewards than 20 total miles and this trail has a lot of rewards. don't miss out.

Kind of a climb but once you’re at the top the view is so spectacular you won’t even remember the climb

Got the the trailhead in the early afternoon on a Monday to find I was the only one in the parking lot. Didn't meet another hiker going out or back. First mile or so is pretty tame going through open forest. After that it begins to get a bit steeper. Once you reach the ridge the views are amazing the rest of the way. Particularly the views at Buzzard Rock. Truly spectacular for this area. At this point you can turn around if you'd like. You will find views of the surrounding mountains but none better than you've already seen, only ups, downs, and about 4 more miles round trip. I pushed on just to get the distance in. All in all it's a great hike with some solid views. Trail is a bit rocky so I couldn't push the pace as much as I liked. Took about two and a half hours total. I'd recommend shoes with ankle support. I recorded the hike and it was a cool way to keep track of your time, pace, and elevation but it drained my battery terribly so I doubt I'll use the feature again.

Super nice trail hike, beautiful 270 degree view at the top!

My girlfriend and I went this morning despite it being cool outside (29 degF). Great views of the water falls from multiple locations on the trail! Some icy areas but overall pretty easy climb and descent. Highly recommend stopping at the rock cave about half way up

We hiked this on one of the windiest days of the year with 4 very small children & it kicked our butts! The view was worth it, and we’d definitely do it again, but this was a huge challenge for us! We parked in the Priest Wilderness parking lot on 56 & hiked in from there to the overlook. Did about 7 miles total, as we skipped going to the shelter.

One of the best views I’ve seen on a hike

Beautiful me and my girlfriend did it in 4 hours.Spectacular view at the top would do it again in a heartbeat!!!!

Beautiful views and great camping.

My dog and I did this trail 2 days ago. great hike! Very scenic! We took Lewis fork and wow did I under estimate the trail, it's pretty tough. I enjoyed every step though. I will definitely visit the surrounding trails! the horses are so cool. they were on the trail and refused to move so we scooted past and pet them on the way past!

Fun and easy hike with what I imagine is an incredible view! Unfortunately it was 100% foggy, preventing you from seeing more than 10 yards ahead, but the fog did add a fun, erie feel to the hike. Terrain was easy and with an hour stop at the top took 4hrs to complete the 8 mi RT hike. Saw people in passing on the trail and a small group at the top but it never felt too crowded and everyone was super friendly! Will definitely be back on a clear and sunny day to take in the knob in all of its beauty!

Completed the hike 2/20/18 to bag the state high peak. The lush, mossy forest made for neat scenery but also made for a wet and rocky trail. Majority of the trail, as well as the summit, is in the trees which leads to a fairly underwhelming view, but none the less an enjoyable hike with some scenic views here and there. Wish the ponies were out! Trail is longer than the 10.8 mi posted, RT from the trailhead is 12.6 miles. Glad to have VA's tallest peak in the bag!

amazing views, wild ponies, doesn't get much better in the south east

I did an out and back on the AT section instead of the loop and the hike was still a must do in my books. Definitely worth the trip from PA. It's rated moderate because of the inclines but no scrambling. Lots of people. Lots of friendly pups. All the breathtaking views. And there was even a proposal to watch on the knob.

Went on a day I only saw 2 other hikers but that was because it was a bit icy. Beautiful views,

This is probably my favorite hike on the east coast. We did this over a cold winter weekend. The wind was fierce atop the mountain, but the views were breaktaking. The wild ponies were definitely the highlight of the trip. Be careful and pay attention to the route - we ended up getting lost more than once. I reviewed the trail in great detail here for thoes who want to check it out before making the journey! https://adventuresinroamance.com/backpacking-in-the-south/

Gorgeous view, easy hike.

Loved doing this loop today! Was able to do the summit of both Stony Man and Little Stony Man in one go. Was a bit muddy and there were parts of the trail covered in ice so be mindful if you’re going during the colder months.

Husband and I wanted to get into hiking and while on vacation in Virginia, we made this our first hike. We had a blast! We’re in moderate shape and we definitely had to rest a time or two seeing as it’s all uphill with lots of steps but we’re hooked. We went at the end of October when the weather was amazing and the colors were unreal. Great time and great memories!

The hike yielded incredible views of sharp top with a great spot for sunset! The trail never gets too steep and is clearly marked! Highly highly recommend this one!

Great hike

Great hike! It’s a nice walk up and the trail is well maintained. At the the top we hung out on a few boulders and had some snacks. I would definitely recommend it

Probably would have enjoyed this hike more if we went in a warmer spring day. We went on a windy, very cold, January day. Hike to the top is short but all uphill with a good amount of steps. We took our dog with us but I don’t think he enjoyed the steps at all. View from the top is great but the wind was ripping and we didn’t stay up there long. Wanted to check out Buzzards Roost but didn’t have the opportunity today.

Nice hike. Easy trail until you get to the last mile, and then you get some good exercise. The trail stays in the woods until the last second which makes the view at the top just seem to jump out at you. I went on a cool day in fall and the trail was not as busy as I read about. I got to the top and had the view to myself for about a half hour.

Gorgeous! If you are in this area and you do not check this site out, then you’ve missed out!

We did this over Thanksgiving holiday to bag another state high peak. It was cold but clear. The trail is easy with no steep parts. The views were just ok, as compared with other eastern mtns. The weird thing was the summit was in a group of trees? No view at al from there. We didn’t see the ponies, but their poop was everywhere on the high trail. The only thing that makes this hike tough is the length, it’s not that long but it’s frankly boring for at least 75% of it, makes it seem longer.

Awesome hike. Stunning view at the top!
