My new favorite trail. Basic to moderate. Great for hiking or shoeing. I hiked it after a snow and it was great. Beautiful views.

Pretty tough with the ice. Definitely bring micro spikes, makes a huge difference.

Road to trail is closed roughly 3 miles from trailhead.

west climb up was fairly dry with more rock and steps. east side coming down lots of ice at top and mud on most of trail. microspikes were perfect again made life easy. lots of people on east side slipping in non hiking footwear. beautiful views of boulder. nice and different angle to view the flatirons.

Snow shoe or ski in. Otherwise you post hole. Busier than I wanted it yesterday morning. Trail condition is great. Mostly established main trails.. Packed snow on trails until you start climbing the last steep 1000 feet then it’s deep snow country and would be difficult without a reliable flotation devise (snowshoe or ski) The first lake we run into was frozen. To ski or snow shoe? If you ski here you glide. You snowshoe? Hard work = great toned legs! :) either way this place is relatively close to DENVER and offers amazing views and tons of photo ops with other like minded humans. And its as cliche as the saying “it‘s worth it”! Happy trails!

Challenging climb going up but great hike. Pretty icy at the beginning of the descent on the east side and then very muddy for a bit until the trail leveled out and got more dry. Just wore hiking boots and we were fine. Had our dog and there were lots of other friendly dogs.

Great workout. Hiked trail on 1/19. Pretty muddy because of melting snow. A few spots where yaktrax would have been useful but not necessary.

It was icey for the most part, wish I had spikes on my shoes. Despite the trail conditions, I ran into a lot of people. It was 51F on a warm holiday (1/21/19), definitely nice to be out! A perfect short hike in the winter. The view was ok.

Great snow, great trail! Snowshoed up to the lower lake this morning. Started at about 9:30, done by 1:30. Definitely need snowshoes as we were breaking trail in tons of powder up by the lake. Also, snow is great all the way from the trailhead, so best to wear your snowshoes or skins/skis to keep the snow pack as smooth as possible for others.

Pretty slick and snowy, but well worth it.

This has been rebuilt and much steeper than before!!! Trail is going from rock step to rock step and kinda like doing high hurdles... lifting each foot up high but worth it

Great first hike of 2019! I really recommend microspikes as it is slick and icy.

Challenging climb but worth it!

If the parking lot is windy, don't worry. There is great tree cover all the way up to the lakes. The first mile is packed snow, but you can still wear your snowshoes. You will need them. The last mile is a steep climb up and traction is crucial. I continued to the upper lake and followed someone's else's tracks. Snow was knee deep - fun! Took me 3.25 hours RT.

This is a great hike - easy to get to (which account for the amount of traffic it gets), nicely paced circuit and great views throughout. I went clockwise (up west, down east) which probably was a mistake given the conditions at this point. The west side has a small bit of mud and ice and patches of snow but overall was quite dry. The east side was pretty snowy and icy at the top, and then mud at mid-elevation, and then conditions improved towards the bottom. So it might have been better to ascend on the east side and go down the west side. I had hiking boots on it which were fine, no need for microspikes. Lots of people had dogs but they were all well-behaved and friendly.

Amazing trail! Easy to follow and breathtaking views. Muddy and icy for some parts as expected so be sure to have proper hiking footwear. Enjoy!!!

trail was snowy so we walked the road up. saw a herd of deer! pretty hike and really easy.

There was one section of the trail that I completely missed somehow according to the map on here but otherwise a great short hike. Icy and muddy right now though so proper footwear is definitely reccomended.

This was such a fun trail with breathtaking views! It had just snowed and the red rock against the white powder was so beautiful! The uphill was a bit challenging for someone who doesn’t hike a lot, but the views and experience were truly amazing!

beautiful trail and perfect weather on 1/14. 6-8 inches of snow on each side of the trail, moderately packed snow on the trail itself. used micro spikes pretty much all the way.

Easy, brisk trail, great one for beginners

Muddy but a great quick hike

Rangers recommmended that I did not go up the royal arch without micro spikes! Flat irons loop was icy and snowy as it is!

Really great trail! It was snowy most of the trail with some muddy areas. But the views were amazing. Highly recommended!

Hiked 1/13/2019. Trail was pretty muddy

Great views. Did trail clockwise so went up the stairs which felt safer. Trail was snow covered and deep in places. No ice but should wear micro spikes

Made it to the lower crater lakes. Started at 9am and was back at the parking lot by 12:30pm. The last mile is a good upwards climb. Snowshoes only needed up top when you're exploring the lakes. I had crampons on otherwise.

Great hike and definitely doable and safe for children. I did see the same pit bull the lady below complained about today. It was super friendly and gentle. Unlike her I didn’t see a single pile of poop so not sure if she was looking in the trash or what lol.

Extremely unsafe trail to bring younger children due to lack of enforcement of off leash dog rules. There are literally hundreds of piles of dog excrement within a few short miles.
I can no longer bring my nephew here after we were rushed by an off leash pit bull. Of course the owner thought it was funny. Dog owners in Boulder County are the most entitled and ignorant bunch of people you will ever encounter.
