This trail can be considered off the beaten path. it is difficult but so worth it. Be careful and attentive. You will need to follow hard to see markers on trees in the form of ribbons and painted bottle caps. There may be pigs around, I saw footprints but didn't come across one.
Entrance to this trail is easy to miss, so download the map ahead of time, you will lose service and you might get lost.
The trail goes down the mountain to the river bed and follows the riverbed back up to the waterfall, but it cuts across back and forth several times over river. Look for markers, different colors, all the same trail.
When you get to falls, you can unwind and swim. Take the break, it will be rough getting back and looping around to the Aiea trail at the top. Going up it will be muddy and steep. Watch your step. There will be ropes to help in some parts and a lot of ferns hiding the trail. It goes up and up and up until you reach the Aiea trail. Definitely worth it, but go prepared. :)

Great trail with some nice views from the summit. However, the half the of the loop coming back was currently closed due to construction. Overall it was a great time. Moderate difficulty is accurate, however I would say it could bump to hard when it rains, as it did today for us.

Love this hike, that much I’ve hiked it every time I’ve visited with my family. You can Uber back and forth from Waikiki easily, which means you don’t pay the $5 parking fee. You need shoes, as it gets muddy, sunscreen and bug spray. It takes 30mins to hike to the 150ft waterfall, with a clear water pool. Bring/wear swim gear as you can cool off with the family, which really makes a great experience. Great for kids, dogs, families, groups and anyone which wants to see a rainforest and epic waterfall.

Boy... not sure where to begin with this hike. I should start out by saying we did this hike at 04:30 to make it to the top by blue hour. The path is extremely slick and steep in some areas. You NEED to pay attention to where you step and what you hold onto. The ropes are a godsend but make sure they’re sturdy before using them. The area behind the puka is incredibly dangerous as it’s very, very narrow and slick. However, the views are more than worth it. Watching the sky turn golden from the puka was great but the real views were on the ridge walking back. Definitely worth it.

Beautiful. Quite easy for the most part, but get there early to beat the crowd.

the pillbox with the peace sign is further down past the first one. Just dont turn right into another trail and you will miss it.

Very beautiful trail. Enjoyed reading the historical information on the way. Waterfall isn't always available to swim in so you may want to call ahead and check if it's open. You can still walk to it, but if the water is rushing too hard, no swimming.

The only negative was the price and that we didn't know the area was closed to swimming for the day.

Great hike.... All up hill, lots of mud after a rain but the views are amazing.....

Very Scenic hike! Took about an hour with lots of stops for pictures. Went at 8:20. Not much people yet.

Very touristy. Kid friendly. Rocks and roots can be slippery but it’s an easy hike.

Love this trail! Took my two littles with me. Lots of water crossings and mud. There’s even some ruins along the way!

beautiful scenery. I didn't expect the steps to be so steep but it evened out at points. such a great challenge to take on. next time we will have a carrier for our 2 year old.

The trail is initially very steep, but levels out toward the top. The pillbox we found had a nice view of the beach. I was disappointed that we couldn’t find the other pillbox with the peace sign on it. We came across a sign that said “private property”, so I think the other pillbox may have been back there somewhere.

Even though it is a shorter hike, make sure to bring plenty of water and proper footwear. I saw a few folks struggling up the trail in sandals, long pants, and what looked like not enough water.

Challenging elevation cw or ccw. I went full loop ccw which I believe to be easier. Cw would have been uphill through brush. Not fun.

You will cross the stream more like 11 times not 8. The falls were going pretty good. The pool was deep enough to swim. May have had some misting rainfall the day before.

Be alert for trail markings. Some places have broken onto the forest floor.

Took about 4 hrs. Bring at least half a gallon of water, snacks and a pack so you can have your hands free. You will use the foot slide in places. Hiking pole is useful in places. Rocks are very slick.

The full loop is for intermediate to experienced hikers. Out and back to falls is for intermediate hikers. Beginners should be very cautious in deciding to do out and back to falls.

This hike has nice views along the way and multiple spots just off the trail where you can walk to/swim in the stream. It was moderately crowded but not too bad. The trail itself was quite slippery in some spots due to the mud. Overall it was a fun hike with a cool waterfall at the end! Plus, there is a trail head for another trail at the end of this one, literally next to the falls. This trail goes up another 1.3mi or so to the top of the ridge with a beautiful view, it was worth the extra time and effort up.

Easy hike to beautiful waterfall
Child friendly

NEW ROUTE! We are locals. DONT GO the normal way through where all the signs are, through the short bamboo forest and then into the valley clearing. The state has put up a nice new fence around the whole reservoir and they are actively working on it. Instead. Park in the parking area, go to the Right, where there is a locked fence double door. There is a whole in the left side of the fence. Go through there. Go Left down road, then Left again. Bamboo Forrest and mud.Once in clearing follow the brown signs with yellow arrows. Use your phones Google maps to see the different trail options. Remember, once you hear the Lulumahu stream just follow it up and cross everyonce in a while as needed. VERY MUDDY. Wear correct shoes! Bring clean clothes to change into after.

Great starting trail! Perfect for people new to the island.

A well-maintained trail wanders back through the jungle to a nice waterfall. Area is often muddy, so wear good shoes. A light jacket or poncho is recommended due to regular showers.

I love it, what's not to love hiking in Hawaii, country side.

Fairly moderate with no real gradients. Very muddy at the moment but slippery rather than deep. Very peaceful and great when it’s hot out as it’s fairly covered. Pigs are damaging some of the trail and I saw a fairly large one at the 4 mike mark. Worth doing for a quick outing.

Did feel a bit adventures since we lost the easiest trail a couple of times and had to backtrack . My athletic son even continued up a steep mountain side and got to a point above the falls , instead of to the end of the falls. Quite a few people around though so you could find your way by following voices. Muddy, slippery, gorgeous scent of ginger, pretty bamboo. Stunning waterfall! Only wish it was better marked.

Nice pool to swim in

Great trail, though it’s longer than listed. My app said it was 5.6 miles for the loop. Starting at the lower parking lot helped.

This was amazing. My don is 6 and it was his very first HIKE!!! It does get a bit muddy so wear comfortable gear you do not mind getting dirty. Trust me it can wash off. No jeans, no slides, n9 crocks and no sandals. It does have a lot of traffic through it but that means you can't get lost. The waterfall is beautiful. Wear sun screen and Bug spray very important.

It was a nice little walk with my son and beagles.

nice trail. good cardio. if you like to venture using the 'shortcuts' do so with caution. many end up putting you on a mud slide. this girl learned her lesson, after falling about 5 times.

Quiet technic but ok ... super place to see ... we enjoyed it . Not for raining days at all ... our 9 walked easily to the fall but he is used to .
