did this yesterday (1/20) it was beautiful but so windy and cold at the top. I used my snowshoes up and spikes on the way down. the trail is packed enough that spikes and poles would be fine the whole way. great trail with nice views!

Great day hike from Denver! Used microspikes and that was perfect. Lots of beautiful views! Definitely more of a moderate trail in the winter.

Challenging climb but worth it!

Trail was well covered with ice and snow. I went snowshoeing after the storm to work in a quick hike. I was really surprised for the amount of snow. Probably could have done the whole trail with spikes and you would be okay. Best been to get there really early to get the best work of the snowshoes

Great loop if you’re in the mood to hike but not kill yourself with ridiculous incline. Beautiful views throughout but the summit by one of the falls is

Fun trail! Packed with snow but beautiful nonetheless. For some areas having trekking poles would make it easier.

Beautiful setting. This is set as Easy however parking is a bit tricky and it's a pretty steep climb to get to the glacier. Was pretty slick with all the snow, will go again in spring.

I just moved here and found this hike a little challenging because of the altitude. the trail is pretty packed down so I did it in tennis shoes with no problem. a lot of people brought sleds that looked fun! I took a lot of breaks but the view was great.

Went on 1/15. Not too many people, made my own route to make it longer and went to the top of Mt. Falcon. With the snow it was definitely a decent workout! Snow was packed, no need for spikes or poles.

Rangers recommmended that I did not go up the royal arch without micro spikes! Flat irons loop was icy and snowy as it is!

For someone not used to the altitude, this hike can be more challenging than most people have rated it. It’s short, but fairly rocky and steep. Combine that with the altitude, and some breaks may be necessary. Once you reach the top though, it’s worth the effort and you’ll probably want to hang out for a bit. Beautiful hike, but don’t underestimate it!

First ones on the trail 1/13/18, for the most part followed skiers along the trail I was familiar with. We reached a point where the trail was lost and followed up a skiers way for a bit and turned back. We were about .5mi from the lake which was a bummer !!

Absolutely bring snow shoes and spikes. Views are just fabulous

Beautiful bluebird day! Snowshoes were very helpful with about a mile to go. The trail was clear and easy to follow. I highly recommend!

amazing winter hike. snow was loosely packed, not icy. I hiked in just boots with good grip. get out here when the snow is fresh, it's stunning!

Made it to the lower crater lakes. Started at 9am and was back at the parking lot by 12:30pm. The last mile is a good upwards climb. Snowshoes only needed up top when you're exploring the lakes. I had crampons on otherwise.

My friend and I snowshoed this trail yesterday and I was so pretty in the winter! Just outside Denver, it’s a perfect day hike. Views were a little limited due to the cloud coverage, but still so beautiful. The last mile was a little tougher in the snowshoes due to the elevation gain being all at the end (depending on what direction you start), but we made it and loved it! I’d like to try it in the summer months!

Snowshoed 1/12/19. Tracks were easy to follow. Fairly gradual for the first couple of miles. The last mile is pretty steep so be prepared for a climb

Made it to the upper lake on snowshoes! Lots of people on skis up to the lower lakes, but I'm not sure it would be possible for most to make it to upper lake on skis - very steep! You'll need one or the other to make it to the first lakes, started postholing about half a mile from them.

Started around 8:30, got back to the car around 4, with lots of breaks and trail breaking and route finding slowing us down. Absolutely worth the effort! So beautiful.

Directions were accurate to TH. Starts in the burn area but quickly drop int the woods along Goose Creek. Good trail conditions all the way to the historic buildings. Just as much up and down coming and going, good training trail. Links up with other trails in the wilderness.

Excellent hike!

Wow for sure the best snowshoe I've done so far in Colorado. This trail was magical in the snow! Even the drive there was delightful. It can be hard to tell which tracks to follow, but if you keep following the signs for the trail you'll get to the lake eventually! If you go up a little beyond the lake it is heckin steep but the views are stunning and majestic this trail was the best.

beautiful hike! lots of snow overnight, some spots near the top had almost a foot. we hiked with just our boots but snowshoes for some of the less trafficked trails would probably be better. so much fun :)

Beautiful formations and quite low-key.

Drove the hour + from Denver to check this place out. Very cool rock formations, some of which are very delicate. More delicate than they look. Spectacular colors and crevasses.

Was sad and upsetting and actually nauseating to see a large group of tourists going off trail, climbing all over the rock formations. With Absolutely no regard to the signs prohibiting climbing. Absolutely no regard for the delicate formations, some of which are just clay and literally shatters off the sides. This place won't be around much longer with such disrespect for the rock formations happening daily it seems, so catch it while you can (on the path, not on the rocks).

Went with just spikes and gaiters. Unavoidably deep at some parts. Waist deep about 0.3 miles from the end of the trail, which was a real bummer.

a challenging hike especially if you’re not used to the elevation. Incline right away and pretty much the whole time, but definitely worth it.

Definetly the hardest hike I’ve been on, bring lots of water and a small snack. If you’re from the Midwest like myself be prepared for the elevation difference, lots of yawns.

12/8/2018 - A good amount of ice on the trail, so I would recommend spikes at minimum, but a fresh dusting of snow left the trail impassable with about 0.7M to the end (~1.5ft of snow, and I only had spikes on). Most of the snow on the first half of the road had melted, so not ideal for XC skiing or snowmobiling anymore I’d imagine. Only option for parking is illegal street parking.
